| Abstract: | There is an enormous demand for chemical sensors in many areas and disciplines including chemistry, biology, clinical analysis, environmental science. Chemical sensing refers to the continuous monitoring of the presence of chemical species and is a rapidly developing field of science and technology. They are analytical devices which transform chemical information generating from a reaction of the analyte into an measurable signal. Due to their high selectivity, sensitivity, fast response and low cost, electrochemical and fluorescent sensors have attracted great interest among the researchers in various fields. Development of four electrochemical sensors and three fluorescent sensors for food additives and neurotransmitters are presented in the thesis. Based on the excellent properties of multi walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT), poly (L-cysteine) and gold nanoparticles (AuNP) four voltammetric sensors were developed for various food additives like propyl gallate, allura red and sunset yellow. Nanosized fluorescent probes including gold nanoclusters (AuNCs) and CdS quantum dots (QDs) were used for the fluorescent sensing of butylated hydroxyanisole, dopamine and norepinephrine. A total of seven sensors including four electrochemical sensors and three fluorescence sensors have been developed for food additives and neurotransmitters. |

| Abstract: | The thesis entitled novel heterocyclic constructions mediated by nucleophilic carbenes and related chemistry, embodies the results of the investigations carried out to explore the reactivity patterns of the 1:1 zwitterions, generated in situ from various nucleophilic carbenes and DiMethyl AcetyleneDicarboxylate(DMAD) towards aldehydes and ketones. The traditional synthesis of complex organic molecules employs stepwise formation of bonds and involves multiple steps. Besides the sequential synthesis, in several instances, the desired product can also be obtained in one pot reactions of three or more starting compounds. Such reactions in which more than two starting materials react to form a product in such a way that the majority of the atoms of the starting materials can be found in the products are called multicomponent reactions(MCRs). The results of our investigations on the application of N-heterocyclic carbenes in multicomponent reaction with DMAD and aromatic aldehydes leading to the one pot synthesis of 2-oxy-maleate and furanone derivatives. It is interesting to note that dihydrofuran and lactone motifs are present in a number of biologically active natural products and other heterocyclic compounds. It is conceivable that the novel multicomponent reactions described herein will find application in the synthesis of a variety of heterocyclic compounds, and in natural product synthesis. |

| Abstract: | This thesis presents the microwave dielectric properties of two novel dielectric resonator materials with the composition Ca(Ca1/4Nb2/4Ti1/4)O3 and Ca(Ca1/4Ta2/4Ti1/4)O3 ceramics and their application in the fabrication of wideband antennas. The microwave dielectric properties of the ceramics were tailored by several techniques such as doping, glass addition and solid solution formations in the complex perovskite A and B-sites with suitable substitutions. Among the wide variety of DRs developed, ceramic resonators with optimum properties were identified to fabricate broadband dielectric resonator loaded microstrip patch antennas. Furthermore, wideband, high permittivity dielectric resonator antennas were fabricated and explored the possibility of tuning their characteristics by modifying the feed line geometries. |

| Abstract: | In this introduction part, importance has been given to the elastomeric properties of polyurethanes. Emphasis has been laid to this property based on microphase separation and how this could be modified by modifying the segment lengths, as well as the structure of the segments. Implication was also made on the mechanical and thermal properties of these copolymers based on various analytical methods usually used for characterization of polymers. A brief overview of the challenges faced by the polyurethane chemistry was also done, pointing to the fact that though polyurethane industry is more than 75 years old, still a lot of questions remain unanswered, that too mostly in the synthesis of polyurethanes. A major challenge in this industry is the utilization of more environmental friendly “Green Chemistry Routes” for the synthesis of polyurethanes which are devoid of any isocyanates or harsh solvents.The research work in this thesis was focused to develop non-isocyanate green chemical process for polyurethanes and also self-organize the resultant novel polymers into nano-materials. The thesis was focused on the following three major aspects:(i) Design and development of novel melt transurethane process for polyurethanes under non-isocyanate and solvent free melt condition. (ii) Solvent induced self-organization of the novel cycloaliphatic polyurethanes prepared by the melt transurethane process into microporous templates and nano-sized polymeric hexagons and spheres. (iii) Novel polyurethane-oligophenylenevinylene random block copolymer nano-materials and their photoluminescence properties. The second chapter of the thesis gives an elaborate discussion on the “Novel Melt Transurethane Process ” for the synthesis of polyurethanes under non-isocyanate and solvent free melt condition. The polycondensation reaction was carried out between equimolar amounts of a di-urethane monomer and a diol in the presence of a catalyst under melt condition to produce polyurethanes followed by the removal of low boiling alcohol from equilibrium. The polymers synthesized through this green chemical route were found to be soluble (devoid of any cross links), thermally stable and free from any isocyanate entities. The polymerization reaction was confirmed by various analytical techniques with specific references to the extent of reaction which is the main watchful point for any successful polymerization reaction. The mechanistic aspects of the reaction were another point of consideration for the novel polymerization route which was successfully dealt with by performing various model reactions. Since this route was successful enough in synthesizing polyurethanes with novel structures, they were employed for the solvent induced self-organization which is an important area of research in the polymer world in the present scenario. Chapter three mesmerizes the reader with multitudes of morphologies depending upon the chemical backbone structure of the polyurethane as well as on the nature and amount of various solvents employed for the self-organization tactics. The rationale towards these morphologies-“Hydrogen Bonding ” have been systematically probed by various techniques. These polyurethanes were then tagged with luminescent 0ligo(phenylene vinylene) units and the effects of these OPV blocks on the morphology of the polyurethanes were analyzed in chapter four. These blocks have resulted in the formation of novel “Blue Luminescent Balls” which could find various applications in optoelectronic devices as well as delivery vehicles. |

| Abstract: | A systematic investigation of the reactivity and functionalization of two heterocyclic analogs of triphenylmethane , namely tris(2-thienyl)methane and tris(2-furyl)methane have been carried out and the results are presented in this thesis entitled "NOVEL REACTIONS OF TRIS(2-THIENYL)METHANE AND TRIS(2-FURYL)METHANE.". The history of organic free radicals dates back to Gomberg's monumental discovery of the triphenylmethyl radical in 1900. The heterocyclic analogs of triarylmethane are also interesting from the vantage point of their transformation to the corresponding radicals akin to Gomberg ' s triphenylmethyl radical and also they are prone to further transformation leading to three dimensionally elongated molecules such as dendrimers. Dendritic architectures are one of the most pervasive topologies observed in nature at the macro- and microdimensional length devices. Because of their ability to combine both organic and inorganic compounds and their propensity to either encapsulate or be engineered into unimolecular functional devices , dendrimers are versatile amongst existing nanoscale building blocks and materials. |

| Abstract: | In the thesis entitled " Novel Strategies for Heterocyclic Constructions via 1 ,4-Dipolar Intermediates"Synthesis of a complex organic molecules essentially involves the formation of carbon-carbon and carbon-heteroatom bonds. Various synthetic methods are available for these processes involving ionic, pericyclic and radical reactions. Among the pericyclic reactions, dipolar cycloaddition reactions, introduced by Huisgen, have emerged as a very powerful tool for heterocyclic construction. Heterocyclic compounds remain an important class of organic molecules due to their natural abundance and remarkable biological activity, thus constituting an intergral part of pharmaceutical industry. In this respect, developing newer synthetic methodology for heterocyclic construction has been an area of immense interest. In recent years, 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition reactions proved to be efficient routes to a wide variety of five membered heterocycles, as attested by their application in the total synthesis of various complex organic molecules. However, the potential application of similar 1,4- dipolar cycloaddition reactions for the construction of six memebered heterocycles remained underexploited. In this context, a systematic investigation of the reactivity of 1,4-dipoles generated from nitrogen heterocycles (pyridine and its analogues) and dimethyl acetylenedicarboxy!ate (DMAD) towards various dipolarophiles has been carried out and the results are embodied. |

| Abstract: | Carbon-carbon and carbon-heteroatom bond formations constitute the central events in organic synthesis. In view of this, much of the research in organic synthesis has been focused on devising novel and efficient methods for such bond constructions. In general, polar, pericyclic and radical methodologies are employed for this purpose. The polar and radical reactions proceed via reactive intermediates such as carbanions, enols/enolates, enamines, carbocations, radical cations, radical anions, carbenes, zwitterions etc. In recent years, there has been enormous interest in the chemistry of zwitterionic species largely from the standpoint of their applications in multicomponent reactions (MCRs) and organocatalytic reactions. Zwitterions formed by the addition of nucleophiles to electrophilic π-systems such as acetylenic esters and azoesters have been the subject of extensive investigations; their synthetic utility, however, remained largely unexplored. Investigations in a number of laboratories, including our own, have shown that zwitterions of the type mentioned above on reaction with electrophiles give rise to carbo- and heterocyclic products by 1,3- or 1,4-dipolar cycloadditions. Recently, allenoates, another class of active π-systems were introduced to this field. Against this background, a systematic investigation of the reactions of various zwitterions derived from allenoates with different electrophiles especially 1,2-diones, were carried out. The results of these studies are embodied in the thesis entitled “Novel Synthesis of Carbocycles and Heterocycles Employing Zwitterions Derived from Allenic Esters”. |

| Abstract: | Nitrones or azomethine-N-oxides are important precursors for the synthesis of several heterocyclic systems. They belong to the allyl anion type 1,3-dipoles and possess unique structural features which make them extraordinarily useful synthons. They behave as 1,3-dipoles in 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition reactions and as electrophiles in reactions with organometallic reagents. These are the two basic reactions given by nitrones. Nitrones also act as ‘spin traps’ in which they react with short-lived radicals to furnish stable nitroxide radicals which can be detected and identified by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy. Recently SmI2 catalysed reductive cross-coupling reactions of nitrones have gained significant interest in which the reactions are initiated by single electron transfer (SET) to nitrones. Apart from these reactions, nitrones are also known to participate in reactions which are initiated by the nucleophilic attack of nitrone-oxygen. In our group, we have also explored the nucleophilic character of nitrones through various reactions. The results obtained enabled us to develop a novel two-step one-pot strategy for quinolines and indoles - the heterocycles renowned for their pharmacological applications, from nitrones and electron deficient acetylenes. Using dibenzoylacetylene and phenylbenzoylacetylene as dipolarophiles, we could introduce a desired functional group at a predetermined position of the quinolines or indoles to be synthesised. In this context, the thesis entitled “NUCLEOPHILIC ADDITION OF NITRONES TO ELECTRON DEFICIENT ACETYLENES AND RELATED STUDIES” portrays our attempt to expand the scope of our x novel synthetic protocol using ester functionalised acetylenes: dimethyl acetylenedicarboxylate (DMAD) and methyl propiolate. The thesis is organised in to five chapters. The first chapter briefly describes the different classes of reactions that nitrone functionality can tolerate. The research problem is defined at the end of this chapter. The second chapter describes the synthesis of different nitrones used for the present study. The optimisation and expansion of scope of the novel strategy towards quinoline synthesis is discussed in the third chapter. The fourth chapter portrays the synthesis of indole-3-carboxylates using the novel strategy. In the fifth chapter, the reaction of N-(2,6-dimethylphenyl) and N-(2,4,6-trimethylphenyl)nitrones are discussed. Here we also discuss the mechanistic reinvestigation of Baldwin’s proposal in the isoxazoline-oxazoline rearrangement. The major outcome of the work is given at the end of the thesis. The structural formulae, schemes, tables and figures are numbered chapter-wise since each chapter of the thesis is organized as an independent unit. All new compounds (except two compounds reported in fourth chapter) are fully characterised on the basis of spectral and analytical data and single crystal X-ray analysis on representative examples. | Abstract: | Frames are the most widely used structural system for multistorey buildings. A building frame is a three dimensional discrete structure consisting of a number of high rise bays in two directions at right angles to each other in the vertical plane. Multistorey frames are a three dimensional lattice structure which are statically indeterminate. Frames sustain gravity loads and resist lateral forces acting on it. India lies at the north westem end of the Indo-Australian tectonic plate and is identified as an active tectonic area. Under horizontal shaking of the ground, horizontal inertial forces are generated at the floor levels of a multistorey frame. These lateral inertia forces are transferred by the floor slab to the beams, subsequently to the columns and finally to the soil through the foundation system. There are many parameters that affect the response of a structure to ground excitations such as, shape, size and geometry of the structure, type of foundation, soil characteristics etc. The Soil Structure Interaction (SS1) effects refer to the influence of the supporting soil medium on the behavior of the structure when it is subjected to different types of loads. Interaction between the structure and its supporting foundation and soil, which is a complete system, has been modeled with finite elements. Numerical investigations have been carried out on a four bay, twelve storeyed regular multistorey frame considering depth of fixity at ground level, at characteristic depth of pile and at full depth. Soil structure interaction effects have been studied by considering two models for soil viz., discrete and continuum. Linear static analysis has been conducted to study the interaction effects under static load. Free vibration analysis and further shock spectrum analysis has been conducted to study the interaction effects under time dependent loads. The study has been extended to four types of soil viz., laterite, sand, alluvium and layered.The structural responses evaluated in the finite element analysis are bending moment, shear force and axial force for columns, and bending moment and shear force for beams. These responses increase with increase in the founding depth; however these responses show minimal increase beyond the characteristic length of pile. When the soil structure interaction effects are incorporated in the analysis, the aforesaid responses of the frame increases upto the characteristic depth and decreases when the frame has been analysed for the full depth. It has been observed that shock spectrum analysis gives wide variation of responses in the frame compared to linear elastic analysis. Both increase and decrease in responses have been observed in the interior storeys. The good congruence shown by the two finite element models viz., discrete and continuum in linear static analysis has been absent in shock spectrum analysis. |

They are waves generated in the ocean by the disturbance associated with seismic activity, under sea volcanic eruptions, submarine landslides, nuclear explosion or meteorite impacts with the ocean. These waves are generated in the ocean and travel into coastal bays, gulfs, estuaries and rivers. These waves travel as gravity waves with a velocity dependent on water depth. The term tsunami is Japanese and means harbour (tsu) and wave (nami). It has been named so because such waves often develop resonant phenomena in harbours after offshore earthquakes. |

| Abstract: | The motion instability is an important issue that occurs during the operation of towed underwater vehicles (TUV), which considerably affects the accuracy of high precision acoustic instrumentations housed inside the same. Out of the various parameters responsible for this, the disturbances from the tow-ship are the most significant one. The present study focus on the motion dynamics of an underwater towing system with ship induced disturbances as the input. The study focus on an innovative system called two-part towing. The methodology involves numerical modeling of the tow system, which consists of modeling of the tow-cables and vehicles formulation. Previous study in this direction used a segmental approach for the modeling of the cable. Even though, the model was successful in predicting the heave response of the tow-body, instabilities were observed in the numerical solution. The present study devises a simple approach called lumped mass spring model (LMSM) for the cable formulation. In this work, the traditional LMSM has been modified in two ways. First, by implementing advanced time integration procedures and secondly, use of a modified beam model which uses only translational degrees of freedoms for solving beam equation. A number of time integration procedures, such as Euler, Houbolt, Newmark and HHT-α were implemented in the traditional LMSM and the strength and weakness of each scheme were numerically estimated. In most of the previous studies, hydrodynamic forces acting on the tow-system such as drag and lift etc. are approximated as analytical expression of velocities. This approach restricts these models to use simple cylindrical shaped towed bodies and may not be applicable modern tow systems which are diversed in shape and complexity. Hence, this particular study, hydrodynamic parameters such as drag and lift of the tow-system are estimated using CFD techniques. To achieve this, a RANS based CFD code has been developed. Further, a new convection interpolation scheme for CFD simulation, called BNCUS, which is blend of cell based and node based formulation, was proposed in the study and numerically tested. To account for the fact that simulation takes considerable time in solving fluid dynamic equations, a dedicated parallel computing setup has been developed. Two types of computational parallelisms are explored in the current study, viz; the model for shared memory processors and distributed memory processors. In the present study, shared memory model was used for structural dynamic analysis of towing system, distributed memory one was devised in solving fluid dynamic equations. |

| Abstract: | The present work aims at deciphering the processes that control the nutrient distribution along the EEZ (Exclusive Economic Zone of India) of the west coast of India and to bring out its linkage with primary and secondary productivity. This work assume utmost importance as very few studies have hitherto focused entirely on the EEZ of the west coast of India to address the biochemical responses brought about by monsoons. The present study examines the seasonal variations in physicochemical parameters and associated primary biological responses along the west coast of India. This study targets to measure and understand the shelf ocean exchange in a typical coastal upwelling region of the southeast Arabian Sea, and the influence of convective mixing along the northern part of the west coast of India. The study focuses more directly on coastal upwelling along the southwest coast of India, within the EEZ. The effects of coastal upwelling, eddy formation and the offshore advection are apparent in the present investigation. This has consequences to fisheries and climate, in energy transfer to the food chain and the increased sequestering of carbon in the ocean. The study also focuses on the Oxygen Minimum Zone (OMZ) and dentrification observed along the EEZ of the west coast of India on a seasonal scale. In the study, an attempt is also made to demarcate the geographical boundaries of the denitrification zone in the EEZ of India and on the nature and magnitude of these variations, on a seasonal and inter annual scales |

| Abstract: | This study was aimed at to characterize the spatio-temporal trends in the distributional characteristics of various species of nitrogen and phosphorus as well as to elucidate the factors and processes aflecting these nutrients in the dissolved, particulate and sedimentary phases of a river estuarine system. The main area of study is Chalakudy river in Kerala, which is a fresh water system originating from Anamalai hills and ending at Arabian Sea. Its basin is between I00 05 ’ to I00 35’ North latitude and 76” 15 ’ to 760 55’ East longitude. Being a riparian bufler zone, the dynamics of nutrient mobility tend to be more complex and variable in this river-estuarine system.The diflerent species of nitrogen estimated from the filtrate were nitrite-N, nitrateN, ammonia-N, urea-N, total nitrogen and residual nitrogen. The diflerent forms of phosphorus estimated from the filtrate were phosphate-P, total-P and residualP. Pre weighed sediments as well as particulate matter were analysed for quantijying nitrite-N, nitrate-N, ammonia-N and urea-N. Total nitrogen was estimated after digestion with potassium persulfate. Fractionation of phosphorus in sediment/particulate matter was performed by applying sequential extraction procedure. The dijferent forms of phosphorus thus estimated were loosely bound (exchangeable) P, Fe/Al bound P, polyphosphates, Ca bound P and refractory P. Sedimental total P was also measured directly by applying digestion method.The analyses carried out in this bimonthly annual survey have revealed specific information on the latent factors influencing the water quality pattern ofthe river. There was dependence among the chemical components of the river sediment and suspended matter, reflecting the water quality. A period of profound environmental change occurred and changes in various species had been noted in association with seasonal variations in the waterway, especially following enhanced river runoff during the monsoon. The results also successfully represented the distribution trend of nutrients during the rainy as well as dry season. Thus, the information gathered in this work will also be beneficial for those interested or involved in river management, conservation, regulation and policy making in regional and national levels. |

| Abstract: | Most tropical aquatic environments are naturally fertile and their natural fertility is renewed very rapidly. Natural food for many cultivable organisms can be grown to the maximum by proper management. However, enrichment of the environment can be done through rational fertilization. Still further increase in stocking rates, can yield increased crop if adequate feeding is done. Thus fish and shellfish nutrition is an important aspect of the multidisciplinary subject of aquaculture. The oldest and most classical studies in physiology have investigated the nutritional needs of the species of interest to aquaculture. The alimentary requirements for proteins, lipids, mineral salts and vitamins have been established for some temperate species. But, the nutritional requirements of only few tropical species have been studied. Before formulating a diet, a thorough knowledge of the nutrient requirement of the species is essential. It is against this background that the present area of investigation has been identified. "Nutritional requirements of the fry of gold-spot mullet Liza parsia" is a comprehensive attempt to quantify the nutritional factors that are essential for producing healthy fingerlings for stocking the farms. Aspects such as the protein and lipid requirements of the fry, the vitamin essentiality, nutritive evaluation of protein and lipid sources suitable for compounding diets were covered in this research project. The ultimate aim has been to evolve practical diets which could be applied in the nursery phase for juvenile production. |

| Abstract: | Man in his quest to explore food has turned towards the oceans and during the last five decades there has been phenomenal increase in the exploitation of the marine fisheries resources. The present study is carried out to determine the requirement of protein and water-soluble vitamins in the diet of juveniles of the Indian white prawn p.indicus using purified diets and to evaluate the nutritive value of a few plant and animal protein sources for the same species. A total of ten statistically designed experiments are conducted in the laboratory undermost identical conditions and following similar methodologies. The study also tries to suggest the essential and optimal requirements for protein as well as water-soluble vitamins in the diet of juvenile p.indicus |

| Abstract: | The present work is the study of filamentous algae in the paddy fields of Kuttanad and Kole lands of Kerala. This investigation was initiated by sampling of filamentous algae in Kuttanad during December 2010 to February 2011. A second phase of sampling was done from November 2011 to February 2012. The sampling periodicity corresponded to the crop growth starting from field preparation through sowing, and continued till the harvest. Sampling locations were selected from the active paddy cultivation regions of the six agronomic zones of Kuttanad. The numbers of sampling locations were proportional to the area of each zone. Algae of the Kole lands were collected during from October 2011 to January 2012. It was observed that blue-green algae dominated in both Kuttanad and Kole lands. Thirty two species of blue-green algae and eight species of green algae were identified from Kuttanad. The highest number of algal species was observed from Kayal lands in Kuttanad throughout the cropping season. Among the thirty two species of blue-green algae twenty five species are nonheterocystous and seven species are heterocystous. Twenty eight species of blue-green and six species of green algae were identified from Kole lands, and highest number of species was observed in Palakkal throughout the cropping season. Among the twenty eight species of blue-green algae collected from Kole lands twenty one species are non-heterocystous, and only seven species are heterocystous filamentous algae. Blooms of Spirogyra were observed during the second phase of sampling in Kuttanad and also in the Kole lands. The results of the germination study revealed that the extract of Spirogyra sp. inhibited seed germination and reduced seedling vigour. The growth of the treated seedlings was evaluated by pot experiments. The results clearly showed that Spirogyra sp. can negatively affect the seed germination, seedling vigour, and the yield of rice. |

| Abstract: | Solid phase extraction (SPE) is a powerful technique for preconcentration/removal or separation of trace and ultra trace amounts of toxic and nutrient elements. SPE effectively simplifies the labour intensive sample preparation, increase its reliability and eliminate the clean up step by using more selective extraction procedures. The synthesis of sorbents with a simplified procedure and diminution of the risks of errors shows the interest in the areas of environmental monitoring, geochemical exploration, food, agricultural, pharmaceutical, biochemical industry and high purity metal designing, etc. There is no universal SPE method because the sample pretreatment depends strongly on the analytical demand. But there is always an increasing demand for more sensitive, selective, rapid and reliable analytical procedures. Among the various materials, chelate modified naphthalene, activated carbon and chelate functionalized highly cross linked polymers are most important. In the biological and environmental field, large numbers of samples are to be analysed within a short span of time. Hence, online flow injection methods are preferred as they allow extraction, separation, identification and quantification of many numbers of analytes. The flow injection online preconcentration flame AAS procedure developed allows the determination of as low as 0.1 µg/l of nickel in soil and cobalt in human hair samples. The developed procedure is precise and rapid and allows the analysis of 30 samples per hour with a loading time of 60 s. The online FI manifold used in the present study permits high sampling, loading rates and thus resulting in higher preconcentration/enrichment factors of -725 and 600 for cobalt and nickel respectively with a 1 min preconcentration time compared to conventional FAAS signal. These enrichment factors are far superior to hitherto developed on line preconcentration procedures for inorganics. The instrumentation adopted in the present study allows much simpler equipment and low maintenance costs compared to costlier ICP-AES or ICP-MS instruments. |

| Abstract: | The main objective of the present study is to have a detailed investigation on the gelation properties, morphology and optical properties of small π-conjugated oligomers. For this purpose we have chosen oligo(p-phenylenevinylene)s (OPVs), a class of molecules which have received considerable attention due to their unique optical and electronic properties. Though a large number of reports are available in the literature on the self-assembly properties of tailor made OPVs, none of them pertain to the design of nanostructures based on organogels. In view of this, we aimed at the creation of functional chromophoric assemblies of π-conjugated OPVs through the formation of organogels, with the objective of crafting nanoscopic assemblies of different size and shape thereby modulating their optical and electronic properties.In order to fulfill the above objectives, the design and synthesis of a variety of OPVs with appropriate structural variations were planned. The design principle involves the derivatization of OPVs with weak H-bonding hydroxymethyl end groups and with long aliphatic hydrocarbon side chains. The noncovalent interactions in these molecules were expected to lead the formation of supramolecular assembly and gels in hydrocarbon solvents. In such an event, detailed study of gelation and extensive analysis of the morphology of the gel structures were planned using advanced microscopic techniques. Since OPVs are strongly fluorescent molecules, gelation is expected to perturb the optical properties. Therefore, detailed study on the gelation induced optical properties as a way to probe the nature and stability of the selfassembly was planned. Apart from this, the potential use of the modulation of the optical properties for the purpose of light harvesting was aimed. The approach to this problem was to entrap an appropriate energy trap to the OPV gel matrix which may lead to the efficient energy transfer from the OPV gel based donor to the entrapped acceptor. The final question that we wanted to address in this investigation was the creation of helical nanostructures through proper modification of the OPV backbone With chiral handles.The present thesis is a detailed and systematic approach to the realization of the above objectives which are presented in different chapters of the thesis. |

| Abstract: | The present study on chaos and fractals in general topological spaces. Chaos theory originated with the work of Edward Lorenz. The phenomenon which changes order into disorder is known as chaos. Theory of fractals has its origin with the frame work of Benoit Mandelbrot in 1977. Fractals are irregular objects. In this study different properties of topological entropy in chaos spaces are studied, which also include hyper spaces. Topological entropy is a measures to determine the complexity of the space, and compare different chaos spaces. The concept of fractals can’t be extended to general topological space fast it involves Hausdorff dimensions. The relations between hausdorff dimension and packing dimension. Regular sets in Metric spaces using packing measures, regular sets were defined in IR” using Hausdorff measures. In this study some properties of self similar sets and partial self similar sets. We can associate a directed graph to each partial selfsimilar set. Dimension properties of partial self similar sets are studied using this graph. Introduce superself similar sets as a generalization of self similar sets and also prove that chaotic self similar self are dense in hyper space. The study concludes some relationships between different kinds of dimension and fractals. By defining regular sets through packing dimension in the same way as regular sets defined by K. Falconer through Hausdorff dimension, and different properties of regular sets also. |

A graph is completely determined by either its adjacencies or its incidences. A matrix can convey this information completely. This makes a proper labelling of the vertices. edges and any other elements considered, an inevitable process. Many types of labelling of finite graphs as Cordial labelling, Egyptian labelling, Arithmetic labeling and Magical labelling are available in the literature. The number of matrices associated with a finite graph are too many For a study ofthis type to be exhaustive. A large number of theorems have been established by various authors for finite matrices. The extension of these results to infinite matrices associated with infinite graphs is neither obvious nor always possible due to convergence problems. | Abstract: | Queueing theory is the mathematical study of ‘queue’ or ‘waiting lines’ where an item from inventory is provided to the customer on completion of service. A typical queueing system consists of a queue and a server. Customers arrive in the system from outside and join the queue in a certain way. The server picks up customers and serves them according to certain service discipline. Customers leave the system immediately after their service is completed. For queueing systems, queue length, waiting time and busy period are of primary interest to applications. The theory permits the derivation and calculation of several performance measures including the average waiting time in the queue or the system, mean queue length, traffic intensity, the expected number waiting or receiving service, mean busy period, distribution of queue length, and the probability of encountering the system in certain states, such as empty, full, having an available server or having to wait a certain time to be served. |

| Abstract: | This thesis entitled' On Queues with Interruptions and Repeat or Resumption of Service' introduces several new concepts into queues with service interruption. It is divided into Seven chapters including an introductory chapter. The following are keywords that we use in this thesis: Phase type (PH) distribution, Markovian Arrival Process (MAP), Geometric Distribution, Service Interruption, First in First out (FIFO), threshold random variable and Super threshold random variable. In the second chapter we introduce a new concept called the 'threshold random variable' which competes with interruption time to decide whether to repeat or resume the interrupted service after removal of interruptions. This notion generalizes the work reported so far in queues with service interruptions. In chapter 3 we introduce the concept of what is called 'Super threshold clock' (a random variable) which keeps track of the total interruption time of a customer during his service except when it is realized before completion of interruption in some cases to be discussed in this thesis and in other cases it exactly measures the duration of all interruptions put together. The Super threshold clock is OIl whenever the service is interrupted and is deactivated when service is rendered. Throughout this thesis the first in first out service discipline is followed except for priority queues. |

| Abstract: | Nature is full of phenomena which we call "chaotic", the weather being a prime example. What we mean by this is that we cannot predict it to any significant accuracy, either because the system is inherently complex, or because some of the governing factors are not deterministic. However, during recent years it has become clear that random behaviour can occur even in very simple systems with very few number of degrees of freedom, without any need for complexity or indeterminacy. The discovery that chaos can be generated even with the help of systems having completely deterministic rules - often models of natural phenomena - has stimulated a lo; of research interest recently. Not that this chaos has no underlying order, but it is of a subtle kind, that has taken a great deal of ingenuity to unravel. In the present thesis, the author introduce a new nonlinear model, a ‘modulated’ logistic map, and analyse it from the view point of ‘deterministic chaos‘. |

| Abstract: | The present study on some infinite convex invariants. The origin of convexity can be traced back to the period of Archimedes and Euclid. At the turn of the nineteenth centaury , convexicity became an independent branch of mathematics with its own problems, methods and theories. The convexity can be sorted out into two kinds, the first type deals with generalization of particular problems such as separation of convex sets[EL], extremality[FA], [DAV] or continuous selection Michael[M1] and the second type involved with a multi- purpose system of axioms. The theory of convex invariants has grown out of the classical results of Helly, Radon and Caratheodory in Euclidean spaces. Levi gave the first general definition of the invariants Helly number and Radon number. The notation of a convex structure was introduced by Jamison[JA4] and that of generating degree was introduced by Van de Vel[VAD8]. We also prove that for a non-coarse convex structure, rank is less than or equal to the generating degree, and also generalize Tverberg’s theorem using infinite partition numbers. | Abstract: | In this thesis we have developed a few inventory models in which items are served to the customers after a processing time. This leads to a queue of demand even when items are available. In chapter two we have discussed a problem involving search of orbital customers for providing inventory. Retrial of orbital customers was also considered in that chapter; in chapter 5 also we discussed retrial inventory model which is sans orbital search of customers. In the remaining chapters (3, 4 and 6) we did not consider retrial of customers, rather we assumed the waiting room capacity of the system to be arbitrarily large. Though the models in chapters 3 and 4 differ only in that in the former we consider positive lead time for replenishment of inventory and in the latter the same is assumed to be negligible, we arrived at sharper results in chapter 4. In chapter 6 we considered a production inventory model with production time distribution for a single item and that of service time of a customer following distinct Erlang distributions. We also introduced protection of production and service stages and investigated the optimal values of the number of stages to be protected. |

| Abstract: | This study is to look the effect of change in the ordering of the Fourier system on Szegö’s classical observations of asymptotic distribution of eigenvalues of finite Toeplitz forms.This is done by checking proofs and Szegö’s properties in the new set up.The Fourier system is unconditional [19], any arbitrary ordering of the Fourier system forms a basis for the Hilbert space L2 [-Π, Π].Here study about the classical Szegö’s theorem.Szegö’s type theorem for operators in L2(R+) and check its validity for certain multiplication operators.Since the trigonometric basis is not available in L2(R+) or in L2(R) .This study discussed about the classes of orderings of Haar System in L2 (R+) and in L2(R) in which Szegö’s Type TheoreT Am is valid for certain multiplication operators.It is divided into two sections. In the first section there is an ordering to Haar system in L2(R+) and prove that with respect to this ordering, Szegö’s Type theorem holds for general class of multiplication operators Tƒ with multiplier ƒ ε L2(R+), subject to some conditions on ƒ.Finally in second section more general classes of ordering of Haar system in L2(R+) and in L2(R) are identified in such a way that for certain classes of multiplication operators the asymptotic distribution of eigenvalues exists. |

| Abstract: | This thesis lays importance in the preparation and characterization of a few selected representatives of the ferrite family in the nanoregime. The candidates being manganese zinc ferrite and cobalt ferrite prepared by coprecipitation and sol-gel combustion techniques respectively. The thesis not only stresses importance on the preparation techniques and optimization of the reaction conditions, but emphasizes in investigating the various properties namely structural, magnetic and electrical. Passivated nickel nanocomposites are synthesized using polystyrene beads and adopting a novel route of ion exchange reduction. The structural and magnetic properties of these magnetic nanocomposites are correlated. The magnetocaloric effect (MCE) exhibited by these materials are also investigated with a view to finding out the potential of these materials as magnetic refrigerants. Calculations using numerical methods are employed to evaluate the entropy change on selected samples. |
