Abstract: | Sol–gel glasses with Fe3O4 nanoparticles having particle sizes laying in the range 10–20 nm were encapsulated in the porous network of silica resulting in nanocomposites having both optical and magnetic properties. Spectroscopic and photoluminescence studies indicated that Fe3O4 nanocrystals are embedded in the silica matrix with no strong Si–O–Fe bonding. The composites exhibited a blue luminescence. The optical absorption edge of the composites red shifted with increasing concentration of Fe3O4 in the silica matrix. There is no obvious shift in the position of the luminescence peak with the concentration of Fe3O4 except that the intensity of the peak is decreased. The unique combinations of magnetic and optical properties are appealing for magneto–optical applications. |

Abstract: | In this paper, we report the results of investigations on the potential of spray pyrolysis technique in depositing electron selective layer over larger area for the fabrication of inverted bulk-heterojunction polymer solar cells. The electron selective layer (In2S3) was deposited using spray pyrolysis technique and the linear heterojunction device thus fabricated exhibited good uniformity in photovoltaic properties throughout the area of the device. An MEH-PPV:PCBM inverted bulk-heterojunction device with In2S3 electron selective layer (active area of 3.25 3.25 cm2) was also fabricated and tested under indoor and outdoor conditions. Fromthe indoor measurements employing a tungsten halogen lamp (50mW/cm2 illumination), an opencircuit voltage of 0.41V and a short-circuit current of 5.6mA were obtained. On the other hand, the outdoor measurements under direct sunlight (74mW/cm2) yielded an open-circuit voltage of 0.46V and a short-circuit current of 9.37mA |

Abstract: | The present work is an attempt to explain particle production in the early univese. We argue that nonzero values of the stress-energy tensor evaluated in squeezed vacuum state can be due to particle production and this supports the concept of particle production from zero-point quantum fluctuations. In the present calculation we use the squeezed coherent state introduced by Fan and Xiao [7]. The vacuum expectation values of stressenergy tensor defined prior to any dynamics in the background gravitational field give all information about particle production. Squeezing of the vacuum is achieved by means of the background gravitational field, which plays the role of a parametric amplifier [8]. The present calculation shows that the vacuum expectation value of the energy density and pressure contain terms in addition to the classical zero-point energy terms. The calculation of the particle production probability shows that the probability increases as the squeezing parameter increases, reaches a maximum value, and then decreases. |

Abstract: | The use of a split-ring resonator (SRR)-loaded waveguide for the design of a band-rejection filter with adjustable bandwidth is reported. The width of the stopband can be adjusted by suitably positioning the SRR array in the waveguide. The rejection band can be made very narrow by placing the array at the electric-field minimum. The stopband attenuation depends on the number of unit cells in the array. |

Abstract: | According to current knowledge, convection over the tropical oceans increases with sea surface temperature (SST) from 26 to 29 °C, and at SSTs above 29 °C, it sharply decreases. Our research shows that it is only over the summer warm pool areas of Indian and west Pacific Oceans (monsoon areas) where the zone of maximum SST is away from the equator that this kind of SST-convection relationship exists. In these areas (1) convection is related to the SST gradient that generates low-level moisture convergence and upward vertical motion in the atmosphere. This has modelling support. Regions of SST maxima have low SST gradients and therefore feeble convection. (2) Convection initiated by SST gradient produces strong wind fields particularly cross-equatorial low-level jetstreams (LLJs) on the equator-ward side of the warm pool and both the convection and LLJ grow through a positive feedback process. Thus, large values of convection are associated with the cyclonic vorticity of the LLJ in the atmospheric boundary layer. In the inter-tropical convergence zone (ITCZ) over the east Pacific Ocean and the south Pacific convergence zone (SPCZ) over the west Pacific Ocean, low-level winds from north and south hemisphere converge in the zone of maximum SST, which lies close to the equator producing there elongated bands of deep convection, where we find that convection increases with SST for the full range of SSTs unlike in the warm pool regions. The low-level wind divergence computed using QuikSCAT winds has large and significant linear correlation with convection in both the warm pool and ITCZ/SPCZ areas. But the linear correlation between SST and convection is large only for the ITCZ/SPCZ. These findings have important implications for the modelling of largescale atmospheric circulations and the associated convective rainfall over the tropical oceans |

Abstract: | We consider the stability properties of spatial and temporal periodic orbits of one-dimensional coupled-map lattices. The stability matrices for them are of the block-circulant form. This helps us to reduce the problem of stability of spatially periodic orbits to the smaller orbits corresponding to the building blocks of spatial periodicity, enabling us to obtain the conditions for stability in terms of those for smaller orbits. |

Abstract: | This study is an attempt to situate the quality of life and standard of living of local communities in ecotourism destinations inter alia their perception on forest conservation and the satisfaction level of the local community. 650 EDC/VSS members from Kerala demarcated into three zones constitute the data source. Four variables have been considered for evaluating the quality of life of the stakeholders of ecotourism sites, which is then funneled to the income-education spectrum for hypothesizing into the SLI framework. Zone-wise analysis of the community members working in tourism sector shows that the community members have benefited totally from tourism development in the region as they have got both employments as well as secured livelihood options. Most of the quality of life-indicators of the community in the eco-tourist centres show a promising position. The community perception does not show any negative impact on environment as well as on their local culture. |

Abstract: | Filled compounds of natural rubber, isobutylene-isoprene rubber and styrene-butadiene rubber compounds were extruded through a laboratory extruder by varying the feeding rate at different temperatures and revolutions per minute. The extruded compounds were vulcanized up to their optimum cure times and the mechanical properties of the vulcanizates were determined. The properties suggest that there is a particular feeding rate in the starved fed region which results in maximum mechanical properties. The study shows that running the extruder at a slightly starved condition is an attractive means of improving the physical properties. |

Abstract: | As the popularity of digital videos increases, a large number illegal videos are being generated and getting published. Video copies are generated by performing various sorts of transformations on the original video data. For effectively identifying such illegal videos, the image features that are invariant to various transformations must be extracted for performing similarity matching. An image feature can be its local feature or global feature. Among them, local features are powerful and have been applied in a wide variety of computer vision aplications .This paper focuses on various recently proposed local detectors and descriptors that are invariant to a number of image transformations. |

Abstract: | The standard models for statistical signal extraction assume that the signal and noise are generated by linear Gaussian processes. The optimum filter weights for those models are derived using the method of minimum mean square error. In the present work we study the properties of signal extraction models under the assumption that signal/noise are generated by symmetric stable processes. The optimum filter is obtained by the method of minimum dispersion. The performance of the new filter is compared with their Gaussian counterparts by simulation. |

Abstract: | The transient interaction between a refraction index grating and light beams during simultaneous writing and thermal fixing of a photorefractive hologram is investigated. With a diffusion- and photovoltaic-dominated carrier transport mechanism and carrier thermal activation (temperature dependent) considered in Fe:LiNbO3 crystal, from the standpoint of field-material coupling, the theoretical thermal fixing time and the space-charge field buildup, spatial distribution, and temperature dependence are given numerically by combining the band transport model with mobile ions with the coupled-wave equation |

Abstract: | Nano magnetic oxides are promising candidates for high density magnetic storage and other applications. Nonspherical mesoscopic iron oxide particles are also candidate materials for studying the shape, size and strain induced modifications of various physical properties viz. optical, magnetic and structural. Spherical and nonspherical iron oxides having an aspect ratio, ~2, are synthesized by employing starch and ethylene glycol and starch and water, respectively by a novel technique. Their optical, structural, thermal and magnetic properties are evaluated. A red shift of 0⋅24 eV is observed in the case of nonspherical particles when compared to spherical ones. The red shift is attributed to strain induced changes in internal pressure inside the elongated iron oxide particles. Pressure induced effects are due to the increased overlap of wave functions. Magnetic measurements reveal that particles are superparamagnetic. The marked increase in coercivity in the case of elongated particles is a clear evidence for shape induced anisotropy. The decreased specific saturation magnetization of the samples is explained on the basis of weight percentage of starch, a nonmagnetic component and is verified by TGA and FTIR studies. This technique can be modified for tailoring the aspect ratio and these particles are promising candidates for drug delivery and contrast enhancement agents in magnetic resonance imaging |

Abstract: | Glass fiber reinforced polymer (GFRP) rebars have been identified as an alternate construction material for reinforcing concrete during the last decade primarily due to its strength and durability related characteristics. These materials have strength higher than steel, but exhibit linear stress–strain response up to failure. Furthermore, the modulus of elasticity of GFRP is significantly lower than that of steel. This reduced stiffness often controls the design of the GFRP reinforced concrete elements. In the present investigation, GFRP reinforced beams designed based on limit state principles have been examined to understand their strength and serviceability performance. A block type rotation failure was observed for GFRP reinforced beams, while flexural failure was observed in geometrically similar control beams reinforced with steel rebars. An analytical model has been proposed for strength assessment accounting for the failure pattern observed for GFRP reinforced beams. The serviceability criteria for design of GFRP reinforced beams appear to be governed by maximum crack width. An empirical model has been proposed for predicting the maximum width of the cracks. Deflection of these GFRP rebar reinforced beams has been predicted using an earlier model available in the literature. The results predicted by the analytical model compare well with the experimental data |

Abstract: | The stress relaxation behavior of polyurethane elastomer and short polyester fiber filled elastomer composites with and without bonding agents at different strain levels and strain rates was studied. It was found that these compounds exhibit a multistage relaxation mechanism and that the rate of relaxation and cross-over time depend on the strain level and strain rate. The incorporation of fibers reduced the stage-I relaxation rate and increased the cross-over time of the gum vulcanisate. A higher rate of relaxation (first stage) was shown by the composites with longitudinal fiber orientation and composites with bonding agents. |

Abstract: | For establishing nitrification in prawn (non-penaeid, salinity 10–15 ppt) and shrimp (penaeid, salinity 30–35 ppt) larval production systems, a stringed bed suspended bioreactor (SBSBR) was designed, fabricated, and validated. It was fabricated with 5 mm polystyrene and low density polyethylene beads as the substrata for ammonia and nitrite oxidizing bacterial consortia, respectively, with an overall surface area of 684 cm2. The reactors were activated in a prototype activator and were transported in polythene bags to the site of testing. Performance of the reactors activated with the nitrifying bacterial consortia AMONPCU-1 (ammonia oxidizers for non-penaeid culture) and NIONPCU-1 (nitrite oxidizers for non-penaeid culture) was evaluated in a Macrobrachium rosenbergii larval rearing system and those activated with AMOPCU-1 (ammonia oxidizers for penaeid culture) and NIOPCU-1 (nitrite oxidizers for penaeid culture) in a Penaeus monodon seed production system. Rapid setting up of nitrification could be observed in both the static systems which resulted in a higher relative per cent survival of larvae |
