| Abstract: | This thesis entitled spatial and temporal variarion of microbial community structure in surficial sediments of cochin estuary.In the estuarine and coastal systems, organic matter (OM) is derived not only from autochthonous primary production, but also from allochthonous (terrestrial) organic matter (OM) delivered by river discharge and runoff. A significant portion of the OM sinks through the water column and is ultimately stored in carbon pool in the sediments.Analysis of spatial and temporal variation in benthic microbial community of a tropical estuary was conducted for the first time using non selective measures that affirms that PLFA approach is a sensitive and reliable method in determining microbial community structures of surficial sediments of estuary.The close relationship between the concentrations of the microbial fatty acids and total biomass indicates that bacteria could account for the largest proportion of the biomass in the sediments.This is first study that has documented the changes in microbial community composition linkage to biotic and abiotic variables in benthic estuarine ecosystem. This contemporaneous community will be the backdrop for understanding the response of autochthonous community to increasing anthropogenic stress. |

| Abstract: | The influence of salinity on phytoplankton varies widely, because different species have different salinity preferences. Like marine and aquatic species, many phytoplankton species exhibit tolerance to certain salinity, beyond which, it can inhibit their growth. Light is the most important factor that influences phytoplankton growth. In aquatic environments (lakes, sea or estuary) the light incident on the surface is rapidly reduced exponentially with depth (Krik, 1994). In estuaries, the major factor influencing the light availability is the suspended particulate matter, which attenuates and scatters the light. The light changes with time of the day and the season, affecting the amount of light penetrating the water column. Similarly, biological factor like copepod grazing is a major factor influencing the standing crop of phytoplankton. The copepod can actively graze up to 75% of the phytoplankton biomass in a tropical estuary (Tan et. al., 2004). It is in the context that the present study investigates the salinity, light (physical factors) and copepod grazing (biological factor) phytoplankton as the factors controlling phytoplankton growth and distribution |

| Abstract: | The aim of the thesis was to design and develop spatially adaptive denoising techniques with edge and feature preservation, for images corrupted with additive white Gaussian noise and SAR images affected with speckle noise. Image denoising is a well researched topic. It has found multifaceted applications in our day to day life. Image denoising based on multi resolution analysis using wavelet transform has received considerable attention in recent years. The directionlet based denoising schemes presented in this thesis are effective in preserving the image specific features like edges and contours in denoising. Scope of this research is still open in areas like further optimization in terms of speed and extension of the techniques to other related areas like colour and video image denoising. Such studies would further augment the practical use of these techniques. |

| Abstract: | Urban developments have exerted immense pressure on wetlands. Urban areas are normally centers of commercial activity and continue to attract migrants in large numbers in search of employment from different areas. As a result, habitations keep coming up in the natural areas / flood plains. This is happening in various Indian cities and towns and large habitations are coming up in low-lying areas, often encroaching even over drainage channels. In some cases, houses are constructed even on top of nallahs and drains. In the case of Kochi the situation is even worse as the base of the urban development itself stands on a completely reclaimed island. Also the topography and geology demanded more reclamation of land when the city developed as an agglomerative cluster. Cochin is a coastal settlement interspersed with a large backwater system and fringed on the eastern side by laterite-capped low hills from which a number of streams drain into the backwater system. The ridge line of the eastern low hills provides a welldefined watershed delimiting Cochin basin which help to confine the environmental parameters within a physical limit. This leads to an obvious conclusion that if physiography alone is considered, the western flatland is ideal for urban development. However it will result in serious environmental deterioration, as it comprises mainly of wetland and for availability of land there has to be large scale filling up of these wetlands which includes shallow mangrove-fringed water sheets, paddy fields, Pokkali fields, estuary etc.Chapter 1 School 4 of Environmental Studies The urban boundaries of Cochin are expanding fast with a consequent over-stretching of the existing fabric of basic amenities and services. | Abstract: | Ozone present in the atmosphere not only absorbs the biologically harmful ultraviolet radiation but also is an important ingredient of the climate system. The radiative absorption properties of ozone make it a determining factor in the structure of the atmosphere. Ozone in the troposphere has many negative impacts on humans and other living beings. Another significant aspect is the absorption of outgoing infrared radiation by ozone thus acting as a greenhouse gas. The variability of ozone in the atmosphere involves many interconnections with the incoming and outgoing radiation, temperature circulation etc. Hence ozone forms an important part of chemistry-climate as well as radiative transfer models. This aspect also makes the quantification of ozone more important. The discovery of Antarctic ozone hole and the role of anthropogenic activities in causing it made it possible to plan and implement necessary preventive measures. Continuous monitoring of ozone is also necessary to identify the effect of these preventive steps. The reactions involving the formation and destruction of ozone are influenced significantly by the temperature fluctuations of the atmosphere. On the other hand the variations in ozone can change the temperature structure of the atmosphere. Indian subcontinent is a region having large weather and climate variability which is evident from the large interannual variability of monsoon system over the region. Nearly half of Indian region comprises the tropical region. Most of ozone is formed in the tropical region and transported to higher latitudes. The formation and transport of ozone can be influenced by changes in solar radiation and various atmospheric circulation features. Besides industrial activities and vehicular traffic is more due to its large population. This may give rise to an increase in the production of tropospheric ozone which is greenhouse gas. Hence it becomes necessary to monitor the atmospheric ozone over this region. This study probes into the spatial distribution and temporal evolution of ozone over Indian subcontinent and discusses the contributing atmospheric parameters. |

| Abstract: | Motivation for Speaker recognition work is presented in the first part of the thesis. An exhaustive survey of past work in this field is also presented. A low cost system not including complex computation has been chosen for implementation. Towards achieving this a PC based system is designed and developed. A front end analog to digital convertor (12 bit) is built and interfaced to a PC. Software to control the ADC and to perform various analytical functions including feature vector evaluation is developed. It is shown that a fixed set of phrases incorporating evenly balanced phonemes is aptly suited for the speaker recognition work at hand. A set of phrases are chosen for recognition. Two new methods are adopted for the feature evaluation. Some new measurements involving a symmetry check method for pitch period detection and ACE‘ are used as featured. Arguments are provided to show the need for a new model for speech production. Starting from heuristic, a knowledge based (KB) speech production model is presented. In this model, a KB provides impulses to a voice producing mechanism and constant correction is applied via a feedback path. It is this correction that differs from speaker to speaker. Methods of defining measurable parameters for use as features are described. Algorithms for speaker recognition are developed and implemented. Two methods are presented. The first is based on the model postulated. Here the entropy on the utterance of a phoneme is evaluated. The transitions of voiced regions are used as speaker dependent features. The second method presented uses features found in other works, but evaluated differently. A knock—out scheme is used to provide the weightage values for the selection of features. Results of implementation are presented which show on an average of 80% recognition. It is also shown that if there are long gaps between sessions, the performance deteriorates and is speaker dependent. Cross recognition percentages are also presented and this in the worst case rises to 30% while the best case is 0%. Suggestions for further work are given in the concluding chapter. |

| Abstract: | This thesis Entitled Spectral theory of bounded self-adjoint operators -A linear algebraic approach.The main results of the thesis can be classified as three different approaches to the spectral approximation problems. The truncation method and its perturbed versions are part of the classical linear algebraic approach to the subject. The usage of block Toeplitz-Laurent operators and the matrix valued symbols is considered as a particular example where the linear algebraic techniques are effective in simplifying problems in inverse spectral theory. The abstract approach to the spectral approximation problems via pre-conditioners and Korovkin-type theorems is an attempt to make the computations involved, well conditioned. However, in all these approaches, linear algebra comes as the central object. The objective of this study is to discuss the linear algebraic techniques in the spectral theory of bounded self-adjoint operators on a separable Hilbert space. The usage of truncation method in approximating the bounds of essential spectrum and the discrete spectral values outside these bounds is well known. The spectral gap prediction and related results was proved in the second chapter. The discrete versions of Borg-type theorems, proved in the third chapter, partly overlap with some known results in operator theory. The pure linear algebraic approach is the main novelty of the results proved here. |

| Abstract: | The spectral and nonlinear optical characteristics of nano ZnO and its composites are investigated. The fluorescence behaviour of nano colloids of ZnO has been studied as a function of the excitation wavelength and there is a red shift in emission peak with excitation wavelength. Apart from the observation of the reported ultra violet and green emissions, our results reveal that additional blue emissions at 420 nm and 490 nm are developed with increasing particle size. Systematic studies on nano ZnO have indicated the presence of luminescence due to excitonic emissions when excited with 255 nm as well as significant contribution from surface defect states when excited with 325 nm. In the weak confinement regime, the third-order optical susceptibility χ(3) increases with increasing particle size (R) and annealing temperature (T) and a R2 and T2.5 dependence of χ(3) is obtained for nano ZnO. ZnO nanocolloids exhibit induced absorption whereas the self assembled films of ZnO exhibit saturable absorption due to saturation of linear absorption of ZnO defect states and electronic effects. ZnO nanocomposites exhibit negative nonlinear index of refraction which can be attributed to two photon absorption followed by weak free carrier absorption. The increase of the third-order nonlinearity in the composites can be attributed to the enhancement of exciton oscillator strength. The nonlinear response of ZnO nanocomposites is wavelength dependent and switching from induced absorption to saturable absorption has been observed at resonant wavelengths. Such a change-over is related to the interplay of plasmon/exciton band bleach and optical limiting mechanisms. This study is important in identifying the spectral range and the composition over which the nonlinear material acts as an optical limiter. ZnO based nanocomposites are potential materials for enhanced and tunable light emission and for the development of nonlinear optical devices with a relatively small optical limiting threshold. |

The crucial aim of these investigations was to synthesize and characterize some transition metal complexes using the ligands benzaldehyde, 2-hydroxybenzaldehyde and 4-methoxybenzaldehyde N(4)-ring incorporated thiosemicarbazones.The study involves a brief foreword of the metal complexes of thiosemicarbazones including their bonding, stereochemistry and biological activities.The different analytical and spectroscopic techniques used for the analysis of the ligands and their complexes are discussed.It also deals with the synthesis and spectral characterization of the thiosemicarbazones and single crystal X-ray diffraction study of one of them.Chapter 3 describes the synthesis, spectral characterization, single crystal X-ray diffraction studies of copper(ll) complexes with ONS/NS donor thiosemicarbazones. Chapter 4 deals with the synthesis, spectral characterization and single crystal X-ray diffraction studies of nickel(II) complexes. | Abstract: | Aqua complex ions of metals must have existed since the appearance of water on the earth, and the subsequent appearance of life depended on, and may even have resulted from the interaction of metal ions with organic molecules. Studies on the coordinating ability of metal ions with other molecules and anions culminated in the theories of/\lfred Werner. Thereon the progress in the studies of metal complex chemistry was rapid. Many factors, like the utility and economic importance of metal chemistry, the intrinsic interest _in many of the compounds and the intellectual challenge of the structural problems to be solved, have contributed to this rapid progress. X—ray diffraction studies further accelerated the progress. The work cited in this thesis was carried out by the author in the Department of Applied Chemistry during 2001-2004. The primary aim of these investigations was to synthesise and characterize some transition metal complexes of 2-benzoylpyridine N(4)-substituted thiosemicarbazones and to study the antimicrobial activities of the ligands and their metal complexes. | Abstract: | The present work is concentrated on the studies of two novel semicarbazones, di-2-pyridyl ketone-N4-phenyl-3-semicarbazone (HL1) and quinoline-2-carboxaldehyde-N4-phenyl-3-semicarbazone (HL2). The compositions of these semicarbazones were determined by the CHN analyses. For the characterization of these compounds we have used IR, UV and NMR spectral studies. The molecular structure of quinoline-2-carboxaldehyde-N4-phenyl-3- semicarbazone (HL2) was obtained by single crystal X-ray diffraction studies. Also, we have synthesized Zn(II), Cd(II), Cu(II), Ni(II), Co(II) and Mn(II) complexes of these semicarbazones, HL1 and HL2. These complexes were characterized by various spectroscopic techniques, magnetic and conductivity studies. We could isolate single crystals of some Zn(II) and Cd(II) compounds suitable for X-ray diffraction studies. For other complexes we could not isolate single crystals of good quality for single crystal X-ray diffraction studies. |
