| Abstract: | In this paper, a novel application of solid acid catalysts in the Beckmann rearrangement of E,E-cinnamaldoxime in the synthesis of an important heterocyclic compound; isoquinoline is reported. E,E-Cinnamaldoxime under ambient reaction conditions on zeolite catalysts underwent Beckmann rearrangement to produce isoquinoline in yields of ca. 86–95%. Cinnamonitrile and cinnamaldehyde were formed as by-products. LaH-Y zeolite produces maximum amount of the desired product (yield 95.6%). However, the catalysts are susceptible for deactivation due to the basic nature of the reactants and products, which neutralize the active sites. H-Y zeolite is more susceptible (22% deactivation in 10 h) for deactivation compared to the cerium-exchanged counterpart (18% deactivation in 10 h). Thus, the optimal protocol allows isoquinoline to be synthesised in excellent yields through the Beckmann rearrangement of cinnamaldoxime. The reaction is simple, effective, does not involve any other additives, and environmentally benign. |

| Abstract: | In the present study, we have prepared and evaluated the physical and chemical properties and catalytic activities of various single, mixed and modified pillared montmorillonites. The single oxide pillared clays include AI-, Fe- and Cr-pillared montmorillonites. The mixed oxide pillared montmorillonites such as Fe-AI and Cr-AI pillared systems with various Fe(Cr)/Al ratios are also prepared. Modification of iron-pillared system is done by vanadia impregnation. Characterisation using various physico-chemical techniques and a detailed study of acidic properties are also carried out. Major part of our work is oriented to evaluate the catalytic activity of the pillared systems towards certain important catalytic reactions. Our samples are found to be excellent catalysts for the reactions namely Friedel-Crafts benzylation and benzoylation, methylation of aniline and catalytic wet peroxide oxidation of phenol. |

| Abstract: | Vapour phase methylation of phenol is carried out over La2O3 supported vanadia systems of various composition. The structural features and physico chemical characterisation of the catalysts are investigated. Orthovanadates are formed in addition to surface vanadyl species on the metal oxide support. No V2O5 crystallites are detected. The acid base properties of the oxides are studied by Hammett indicator method and decomposition of cyclohexanol.The data are correlated with the catalytic activity and selectivity of the products. Ring alkylation is found to be predominant over these catalysts. |

| Abstract: | Lanthanum oxide, La2O3 has been found to be an effective catalyst for the liquid phase reduction of cyclohexanone. The catalytic activities of La2O3 activated at 300, 500 and 800·C and its mixed oxides with alumina for the reduction of cyclohexanone with 2-propanol have been determined and the data parallel that of the electron donating properties of the catalysts. | Abstract: | Spinel systems with the composition of Cu 1−x Zn x Cr 2 O 4 [x = 0 CCr, x = 0.25 CZCr-1, x = 0.5 CZCr-2, x = 0.75 CZCr-3 and x = 1 ZCr] were prepared by homogeneous co-precipitation method and were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and FT-IR spectroscopy. Elemental analysis was done by EDX, and surface area measurements by the BET method. The redox behavior of these catalysts in cyclohexane oxidation at 243 K using TBHP as oxidant was examined. Cyclohexanone was the major product over all catalysts with some cyclohexanol. 69.2% selectivity to cyclohexanol and cyclohexanone at 23% conversion of cyclohexane was realized over zinc chromite spinels in 10 h. |

| Abstract: | Iron and mixed iron aluminium pillared montrnorillonites prepared by partial hydrolysis method were subjected to room temperature exchange with transition metals of the first series. The resulting materials were characterised by different spectroscopic techniques and surface area measurements. About 1-3% transition metals were incorporated into the porous network. The structural stability of the porous network was not affected by exchange. XRD and AI NMR spectroscopy evidenced the presence of iron substituted Al13 like polymers in FeAl pillared systems. Acidity and basicity benefited much as a result of metal exchange. Acidity and basicity were quantified by model reactions, viz., cumene cracking and cyclohexanol decomposition respectively. The presence of basic sites in otherwise acidic pillared clays, though diminutive in amount can be of much importance in acid base catalysed reactions. |

| Abstract: | Ruthenium(III) complexes of the Schiff bases formed by the condensation of polymer bound aldehyde and the amines, such as 1,2-phenylenediamine (PS-opd), 2-aminophenol (PS-ap), and 2-aminobenzimidazole (PS-ab) have been prepared. The magnetic moment, EPR and electronic spectra suggest an octahedral structure for the complexes. The complexes of PS-opd, PS-ap, and PS-ab have been assigned the formula [PS-opdRuCl3(H2O)], [PS-apRuCl2(H2O)2], [PS-ab- RuCl3(H2O)2], respectively. These complexes catalyze oxidation of catechol using H2O2 selectively to o-benzoquinone. The catalytic activity of the complexes is in the order [PS-ab- RuCl3(H2O)2] . [PS-opdRuCl3(H2O)] [PS-apRuCl2(H2O)2]. Mechanism of the catalytic oxidation of catechol by ruthenium( III) complex is suggested to take place through the formation of a ruthenium(II) complex and its subsequent oxidation by H2O2 to the ruthenium(III) complex. |

| Abstract: | The current work deals with the synthesis and characterization of metal complexes derived from some substituted acylhydrazones. The hydrazones under investigation were characterized by IR, UV, NMR spectral studies and the molecular structure of one of the hydrazones was solved by single crystal XRD studies. In the present work dioxovanadium(V), manganese(II), cobalt(II/III), nickel(II), copper(II), zinc(II) and cadmium(II) complexes were synthesized and characterized by various spectroscopic techniques, molar conductance measurements, magnetic susceptibility measurements and cyclic voltammetry. Single crystals of some of the complexes were isolated and characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction.The thesis is divided into eight chapters. Chapter 1 gives an introduction on hydrazones, diversity in their chelating behavior and their application in various fields. This chapter also describes different analytical techniques employed for the characterization of hydrazones and their metal complexes. Chapter 2 includes the synthesis and characterization of two substituted acylhydrazones. This chapter also discusses how the coordination behavior of hydrazones under investigation is interesting. Chapters 3-8 discuss the synthesis and characterization of some transition metal complexes derived from the acylhydrazones under study.The hydrazones synthesized were found to exist in the amido form. Various characterization techniques were carried out to explore the structure of the synthesized complexes. The results indicate that both the hydrazones coordinate through the pyridyl and azomethine nitrogens and amide oxygen either in enolate or neutral form. Out of synthesized complexes V(V), Zn/Cd(II) and one of the cobalt complex was found to diamagnetic. We could isolate single crystals of some of the complexes and most of the complexes crystallized were found to have a distorted octahedral geometry. Thus X-ray crystallographic study which was used as major tool in the structure determination revealed that the hydrazones undergo a rotation about the azomethine bond on complexation. We hope the work presented in the thesis would be helpful for those who are working in the field of metal complexes and can further they can be utilized for various applications. |

| Abstract: | In the present study on natural antioxidants, the focus has been kept mainly on oil seeds, especially sesame and its by-products. Sesame, which has been under cultivation in India for centuries is called the 'Queen of oil seed crops' because of the high yield of oil obtained and the nutritional qualities of the seed, oil, and meal. Though India is the largest producer of sesame in the world, research on the various health benefits of sesame has been carried out by Japanese Sesame has an important place in the foods and tradit..ional medicine of India from time immemorial. Foreseeing the potential of sesame and its byproducts as an important antioxidant source and its availability in bulk, the present study was focussed on Sesamum species. There are not many reports on the wild species of Sesamum in India, especially of the Kerala region. Hence, in the present study we also included antioxidants of Sesamurnrnalabaricumdistributed throughout the coastal region.The important characteristics of sesame are attributed to the presence of the umquc compounds lignans. Lignans arc a group of natural products of phenyl propanoid ongm, whieh are widely distributed in nature. They display important physiological functions in plants, in human nutrition and medicine, given their extensive health promotive and curative properties. Much interest has been focussed on their effectiveness as antineoplastic agents and research in this area has revealed several modes of action by which they can regulate the growth of mammalian cells. Sesame is an important source of furofuran lignans, of which sesamin and the rare oxygenated derivative sesamoIin are the most abundant. Others include sesamol and glucosides of lignans. Sesarnin and episesamin are reported to have hypocholesterolemic effect, suppressive effect on chemically induced cancer, alleviation of allergy symptoms etc. Sesamol, sesamolin and the lignan glycosides are reported to inhibit lipid peroxidation. Present investigation on sesame and its byproducts have been carried out to explore the possibility of developing a natural antioxidant extract from available resources to be used as a substitute to synthetic ones in vegetable oils and foods. Preliminary analysis showed that sesame cake, a byproduct could still be utilized as a major source of lignans. Sesame cake, which is now used only as a cattlefeed, can be better utilized in the form of a valuable antioxidant source. The present study explains the development of a feasible process for the extraction of antioxidant compounds from sesame cake. The antioxidant extract so prepared from sesame cake has been tested for vegetable oil protection and is found to be effective at low concentration. In addition, studies also include the antioxidant, radical scavenging, anticancer, mosquitocidal and pesticidal activities of extract and individual compounds. |

| Abstract: | Two novel polystyrene-supported Schiff bases, PSOPD and PSHQAD, were synthesized. A polymerbound aldehyde was condensed with o-phenylenediamine to prepare the Schiff base PSOPD, and a polymer-bound amine was condensed with 3-hydroxyquinoxaline-2-carboxaldehyde to prepare the Schiff base PSHQAD. This article addresses the study of cobalt (II), nickel (II), and copper (II) complexes of these polymer-bound Schiff bases. All the complexes were characterized, and the probable geometry was suggested using elemental analysis, diffuse reflectance ultraviolet, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, thermal studies, surface area studies, and magnetic measurements. |

| Abstract: | In this thesis an attempt has been made to compare the catalytic activity of some medium and large pore zeolites in a few alkylation and acylation reactions. The work reported in the present study is basically centered around the following zeolites namely, ZSM-5, mordenite, zeolite Y and beta. The major reactions carried out were benzoylation of o-xylene, propionylation of toluene and anisole and benzylation of 0xylene.The programme involves the synthesis, modifications and characterization of the zeolite catalysts by various methods. The influence of various parameters such as non-framework cations, Si/AI ratio of zeolites, temperature of the reaction, catalyst concentration, molar ratio of the reactants and recycling of the catalysts were also examined upon the conversion of reactants and the formation of the desired products in the alkylation / acylation reactions.The general conclusions drawn by us from the results obtained are summarized in the last chapter of the thesis. Zeolite beta offers interesting opportunities as a potential catalyst in alkylation reactions and the area of catalysis by medium and large pore zeolites is very fascinating and there is plenty of scope for further research in this field. Moreover, zeolite based catalysts are effective in meeting current industrial processing and more stringent environment pollution limits. |
