Abstract: | Although the main application of optical fibers are in the field of telecommunication, optical fiber based sensors of various designs are becoming valuable devices for wide industrial applications. The advantages of optical fiber-based sensors include high sensitivity, insensitivity to electromagnetic radiation; spark free, light weight and minimal intrusiveness due to their relatively small size and deployment in harsh and hostile environments. It has been proved that POI-7 based sensors can be employed to detect a great variety of parameters including temperature, humidity, pressure, refractive index etc. The proposed thesis presented in six chapters deals with the work carried on dye doped and undoped POF for photonic device applications such as amplifier, laser and sensor |

Abstract: | Polymer Optical Fibers have occupied historically a place for large core flexible fibers operating in short distances. In addition to their practical passive application in short-haul communication they constitute a potential research field as active devices with organic dopants. Organic dyes are preferred as dopants over organic semiconductors due to their higher optical cross section. Thus organic dyes as gain media in a polymer fiber is used to develop efficient and narrow laser sources with a tunability throughout the visible region or optical amplifier with high gain. Dyes incorporated in fiber form has added advantage over other solid state forms such as films since the pump power required to excite the molecules in the core of the fiber is less thereby utilising the pump power effectively. In 1987, Muto et.al investigated a dye doped step index polymer fiber laser. Afterwards, numerous researches have been carried out in this area demonstrating laser emission from step index, graded index and hollow optical fibers incorporating various dyes. Among various dyes, Rhodamine6G is the most widely and commonly used laser dye for the last four decades. Rhodamine6G has many desirable optical properties which make it preferable over other organic dyes such as Coumarin, Nile Blue, Curcumin etc. The research focus on the implementation of efficient fiber lasers and amplifiers for short fiber distances. Developing efficient plastic lasers with electrical pumping can be a new proposal in this field which demands lowest possible threshold pump energy of the gain medium in the cavity as an important parameter. One way of improving the efficiency of the lasers, through low threshold pump energy, is by modifying the gain of the amplifiers in the resonator/cavity. Success in the field of Radiative Decay Engineering can pave way to this problem. Laser gain media consisting of dye-nanoparticle composites can improve the efficiency by lowering the lasing threshold and enhancing the photostability. The electric field confined near the surface of metal nanoparticles due to Localized Surface Plasmon Resonance can be very effective for the excitation of active centers to impart high optical gain for lasing. Since the Surface Plasmon Resonance of nanoparticles of gold and silver lies in the visible range, it can affect the spectral emission characteristics of organic dyes such as Rhodamine6G through plasmon field generated by the particles. The change in emission of the dye placed near metal nanoparticles depend on plasmon field strength which in turn depends on the type of metal, size of nanoparticle, surface modification of the particle and the wavelength of incident light. Progress in fabrication of different types of nanostructures lead to the advent of nanospheres, nanoalloys, core-shell and nanowires to name a few. The thesis deals with the fabrication and characterisation of polymer optical fibers with various metallic and bimetallic nanostructures incorporated in the gain media for efficient fiber lasers with low threshold and improved photostability. |

Abstract: | Many finite elements used in structural analysis possess deficiencies like shear locking, incompressibility locking, poor stress predictions within the element domain, violent stress oscillation, poor convergence etc. An approach that can probably overcome many of these problems would be to consider elements in which the assumed displacement functions satisfy the equations of stress field equilibrium. In this method, the finite element will not only have nodal equilibrium of forces, but also have inner stress field equilibrium. The displacement interpolation functions inside each individual element are truncated polynomial solutions of differential equations. Such elements are likely to give better solutions than the existing elements. In this thesis, a new family of finite elements in which the assumed displacement function satisfies the differential equations of stress field equilibrium is proposed. A general procedure for constructing the displacement functions and use of these functions in the generation of elemental stiffness matrices has been developed. The approach to develop field equilibrium elements is quite general and various elements to analyse different types of structures can be formulated from corresponding stress field equilibrium equations. Using this procedure, a nine node quadrilateral element SFCNQ for plane stress analysis, a sixteen node solid element SFCSS for three dimensional stress analysis and a four node quadrilateral element SFCFP for plate bending problems have been formulated. For implementing these elements, computer programs based on modular concepts have been developed. Numerical investigations on the performance of these elements have been carried out through standard test problems for validation purpose. Comparisons involving theoretical closed form solutions as well as results obtained with existing finite elements have also been made. It is found that the new elements perform well in all the situations considered. Solutions in all the cases converge correctly to the exact values. In many cases, convergence is faster when compared with other existing finite elements. The behaviour of field consistent elements would definitely generate a great deal of interest amongst the users of the finite elements. |

Abstract: | Warships are generally sleek, slender with V shaped sections and block coefficient below 0.5, compared to fuller forms and higher values for commercial ships. They normally operate in the higher Froude number regime, and the hydrodynamic design is primarily aimed at achieving higher speeds with the minimum power. Therefore the structural design and analysis methods are different from those for commercial ships. Certain design guidelines have been given in documents like Naval Engineering Standards and one of the new developments in this regard is the introduction of classification society rules for the design of warships. The marine environment imposes subjective and objective uncertainties on ship structure. The uncertainties in loads, material properties etc.,. make reliable predictions of ship structural response a difficult task. Strength, stiffness and durability criteria for warship structures can be established by investigations on elastic analysis, ultimate strength analysis and reliability analysis. For analysis of complicated warship structures, special means and valid approximations are required.Preliminary structural design of a frigate size ship has been carried out . A finite element model of the hold model, representative of the complexities in the geometric configuration has been created using the finite element software NISA. Two other models representing the geometry to a limited extent also have been created —- one with two transverse frames and the attached plating alongwith the longitudinal members and the other representing the plating and longitudinal stiffeners between two transverse frames. Linear static analysis of the three models have been carried out and each one with three different boundary conditions. The structural responses have been checked for deflections and stresses against the permissible values. The structure has been found adequate in all the cases. The stresses and deflections predicted by the frame model are comparable with those of the hold model. But no such comparison has been realized for the interstiffener plating model with the other two models.Progressive collapse analyses of the models have been conducted for the three boundary conditions, considering geometric nonlinearity and then combined geometric and material nonlinearity for the hold and the frame models. von Mises — lllyushin yield criteria with elastic-perfectly plastic stress-strain curve has been chosen. ln each case, P-Delta curves have been generated and the ultimate load causing failure (ultimate load factor) has been identified as a multiple of the design load specified by NES.Reliability analysis of the hull module under combined geometric and material nonlinearities have been conducted. The Young's Modulus and the shell thickness have been chosen as the variables. Randomly generated values have been used in the analysis. First Order Second Moment has been used to predict the reliability index and thereafter, the probability of failure. The values have been compared against standard values published in literature. |

Abstract: | Development of molecular probes for the selective and sensitive detection of analytes has been an active area of research because such effective molecules can have biological and medicinal applications. Of the various probes reported, the fluorescence based systems have attracted much attention owing to their high sensitivity, fast response time, non–invasiveness and technical simplicity. However, the quantification of a target analyte using the fluorescent probe that acts through a single emission response (either increase or decrease in the fluorescence intensity) can have disadvantages, when compared to the systems that show either dual emission or ratiometric changes. In the case of the systems that exhibit ratiometric changes, the ratio of the fluorescence intensity of the two different wavelengths can be utilized for the quantification of the analyte of interest. Such an observation will have an effective internal referencing that greatly increases the sensitivity of the detection. In this context, it was our objective to develop functional organic systems and to explore their potential as sensitive fluorescent probes for the recognition of anions, cations and biomolecules. The present thesis has been divided into four chapters and of which the first chapter gives an overview on the organic fluorescent probes, with a particular emphasis on their mechanism of molecular recognition. In addition, the specific objectives of the present thesis were also briefly described at the end of this chapter. |

Abstract: | After skin cancer, breast cancer accounts for the second greatest number of cancer diagnoses in women. Currently the etiologies of breast cancer are unknown, and there is no generally accepted therapy for preventing it. Therefore, the best way to improve the prognosis for breast cancer is early detection and treatment. Computer aided detection systems (CAD) for detecting masses or micro-calcifications in mammograms have already been used and proven to be a potentially powerful tool , so the radiologists are attracted by the effectiveness of clinical application of CAD systems. Fractal geometry is well suited for describing the complex physiological structures that defy the traditional Euclidean geometry, which is based on smooth shapes. The major contribution of this research include the development of • A new fractal feature to accurately classify mammograms into normal and normal (i)With masses (benign or malignant) (ii) with microcalcifications (benign or malignant) • A novel fast fractal modeling method to identify the presence of microcalcifications by fractal modeling of mammograms and then subtracting the modeled image from the original mammogram. The performances of these methods were evaluated using different standard statistical analysis methods. The results obtained indicate that the developed methods are highly beneficial for assisting radiologists in making diagnostic decisions. The mammograms for the study were obtained from the two online databases namely, MIAS (Mammographic Image Analysis Society) and DDSM (Digital Database for Screening Mammography. |

Abstract: | Nanoparticulate drug delivery systems provide wide opportunities for solving problems associated with drug stability or disease states and create great expectations in the area of drug delivery (Bosselmann & Williams, 2012). Nanotechnology, in a simple way, explains the technology that deals with one billionth of a meter scale (Ochekpe, et al., 2009). Fewer side effects, poor bioavailability, absorption at intestine, solubility, specific delivery to site of action with good pharmacological efficiency, slow release, degradation of drug and effective therapeutic outcome, are the major challenges faced by most of the drug delivery systems. To a great extent, biopolymer coated drug delivery systems coupled with nanotechnology alleviate the major drawbacks of the common delivery methods. Chitosan, deacetylated chitin, is a copolymer of β-(1, 4) linked glucosamine (deacetylated unit) and N- acetyl glucosamine (acetylated unit) (Radhakumary et al., 2005). Chitosan is biodegradable, non-toxic and bio compatible. Owing to the removal of acetyl moieties that are present in the amine functional groups of chitin, chitosan is readily soluble in aqueous acidic solution. The solubilisation occurs through the protonation of amino groups on the C-2 position of D-glucosamine residues whereby polysaccharide is converted into polycation in acidic media. Chitosan interacts with many active compounds due to the presence of amine group in it. The presence of this active amine group in chitosan was exploited for the interaction with the active molecules in the present study. Nanoparticles of chitosan coupled drugs are utilized for drug delivery in eye, brain, liver, cancer tissues, treatment of spinal cord injury and infections (Sharma et al., 2007; Li, et a., 2009; Paolicelli et al., 2009; Cho et al., 2010). To deliver drugs directly to the intended site of action and to improve pharmacological efficiency by minimizing undesired side effects elsewhere in the body and decrease the long-term use of many drugs, polymeric drug delivery systems can be used (Thatte et al., 2005). |

Abstract: | The present study was designed to investigate the protective effect of curcumin and vitamin D3 in the functional regulation of glutamatergic NMDA and AMPA receptors in streptozotocin (STZ) induced diabetic rats. Alterations in glutamatergic neurotransmission in the brain were evaluated by analyzing the glutamate content, glutamate receptors - NMDA and AMPA receptors binding parameters and gene expression, GAD and GLAST gene expression. Immunohistochemistry studies using confocal microscope were carried out to confirm receptor density and gene expression results of NMDA and AMPA receptors. The role of glutamatergic receptors in pancreas was studied using the following parameters; glutamate content, GLAST expression, glutamate receptors - NMDA and AMPA receptor binding and gene expression. Increasing evidence in both experimental and clinical studies suggests that oxidative stress plays a major role in the pathogenesis of diabetes. In the present study SOD assay and GPx gene expression were done to evaluate the activity of antioxidant enzymes in the brain regions and pancreas. NeuroD1 and Pdx1 gene expression were performed in pancreas of experimental rats to evaluate pancreatic islet survival. Gene expression profiles of caspase 8, Bax, and Akt in brain regions and pancreas were studied to understand the possible mechanism behind curcumin and vitamin D3 mediated neuroprotection and islet survival. Gene expression studies of vitamin D3 receptor localisation in the pancreas was done to understand the mechanism of vitamin D3 in insulin secretion. Curcumin and vitamin D3 mediated insulin secretion via Ca2+ release were studied using confocal microscope. |

Abstract: | Speech is the primary, most prominent and convenient means of communication in audible language. Through speech, people can express their thoughts, feelings or perceptions by the articulation of words. Human speech is a complex signal which is non stationary in nature. It consists of immensely rich information about the words spoken, accent, attitude of the speaker, expression, intention, sex, emotion as well as style. The main objective of Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) is to identify whatever people speak by means of computer algorithms. This enables people to communicate with a computer in a natural spoken language. Automatic recognition of speech by machines has been one of the most exciting, significant and challenging areas of research in the field of signal processing over the past five to six decades. Despite the developments and intensive research done in this area, the performance of ASR is still lower than that of speech recognition by humans and is yet to achieve a completely reliable performance level. The main objective of this thesis is to develop an efficient speech recognition system for recognising speaker independent isolated words in Malayalam. |

Abstract: | The shift from print to digital information has a high impact on all components of the academic library system in India especially the users, services and the staff. Though information is considered as an important resource, the use of ICT tools to collect and disseminate information has been in a slow pace in majority of the University libraries This may be due to various factors like insufficient funds, inadequate staff trained in handling computers and software packages, administrative concerns etc. In Kerala, automation has been initiated in almost all University libraries using library automation software and is under different stages of completion. There are not much studies conducted about the effects of information communication technologies on the professional activities of library professionals in the universities in Kerala. It is important to evaluate whether progress in ICT has had any impact on the library profession in these highest educational institutions. The aim of the study is to assess whether the developments in information communication technologies have any influence on the library professionals’ professional development, and the need for further education and training in the profession and evaluate their skills in handling developments in ICT. The total population of the study is 252 including the permanently employed professional library staff in central libraries and departmental libraries in the main campuses of the universities under study. This is almost a census study of the defined population of users. The questionnaire method was adopted for collection of data for this study, supplemented by interviews of Librarians to gather additional information. Library Professionals have a positive approach towards ICT applications and services in Libraries, but majority do not have the opportunities to develop their skills and competencies in their work environment. To develop competitive personnel in a technologically advanced world, high priority must be given to develop competence in ICT applications, library management and soft skills in library professionals, by the University administrators and Library associations. Library science schools and teaching departments across the country have to take significant steps to revise library science curriculum, and incorporate significant changes to achieve the demands and challenges of library science profession. |

Abstract: | Biometrics is an efficient technology with great possibilities in the area of security system development for official and commercial applications. The biometrics has recently become a significant part of any efficient person authentication solution. The advantage of using biometric traits is that they cannot be stolen, shared or even forgotten. The thesis addresses one of the emerging topics in Authentication System, viz., the implementation of Improved Biometric Authentication System using Multimodal Cue Integration, as the operator assisted identification turns out to be tedious, laborious and time consuming. In order to derive the best performance for the authentication system, an appropriate feature selection criteria has been evolved. It has been seen that the selection of too many features lead to the deterioration in the authentication performance and efficiency. In the work reported in this thesis, various judiciously chosen components of the biometric traits and their feature vectors are used for realizing the newly proposed Biometric Authentication System using Multimodal Cue Integration. The feature vectors so generated from the noisy biometric traits is compared with the feature vectors available in the knowledge base and the most matching pattern is identified for the purpose of user authentication. In an attempt to improve the success rate of the Feature Vector based authentication system, the proposed system has been augmented with the user dependent weighted fusion technique. |

Abstract: | Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is a multi sequence medical imaging technique in which stacks of images are acquired with different tissue contrasts. Simultaneous observation and quantitative analysis of normal brain tissues and small abnormalities from these large numbers of different sequences is a great challenge in clinical applications. Multispectral MRI analysis can simplify the job considerably by combining unlimited number of available co-registered sequences in a single suite. However, poor performance of the multispectral system with conventional image classification and segmentation methods makes it inappropriate for clinical analysis. Recent works in multispectral brain MRI analysis attempted to resolve this issue by improved feature extraction approaches, such as transform based methods, fuzzy approaches, algebraic techniques and so forth. Transform based feature extraction methods like Independent Component Analysis (ICA) and its extensions have been effectively used in recent studies to improve the performance of multispectral brain MRI analysis. However, these global transforms were found to be inefficient and inconsistent in identifying less frequently occurred features like small lesions, from large amount of MR data. The present thesis focuses on the improvement in ICA based feature extraction techniques to enhance the performance of multispectral brain MRI analysis. Methods using spectral clustering and wavelet transforms are proposed to resolve the inefficiency of ICA in identifying small abnormalities, and problems due to ICA over-completeness. Effectiveness of the new methods in brain tissue classification and segmentation is confirmed by a detailed quantitative and qualitative analysis with synthetic and clinical, normal and abnormal, data. In comparison to conventional classification techniques, proposed algorithms provide better performance in classification of normal brain tissues and significant small abnormalities. |
