Abstract: | Laser engineering is an area in which developments in the existing design concepts and technology appear at an alarming rate. Now—a-days, emphasis has shifted from innovation to cost reduction and system improvement. To a major extent, these studies are aimed at attaining larger power densities, higher system efficiency and identification of new lasing media and new lasing wavelengths. Todate researchers have put to use all the ditferent Forms of matter as lasing material. Laser action was observed For the first time in a gaseous system - the He-Ne system. This was Followed by a variety of solidstate and gas laser systems. Uarious organic dyes dissolved in suitable solvents were found to lase when pumped optically. Broad band emission characteristics of these dye molecules made wavelength tuning possible using optical devices. Laser action was also observed in certain p-n junctions of semiconductor materials and some of these systems are also tunable. The recent addition to this list was the observation of laser action from certain laser produced plasmas. The purpose of this investigation was to examine the design and Fabrication techniques of pulsed Nitrogen lasers and high power Nd: Glass laserso Attempt was also made to put the systems developed into certain related experiments |

Abstract: | A brief account of the several methods used for the production of thin films is presented in this Chapter. The discussions stress on the important methods used for the fabrication of a-si:H thin films. This review' also reveals ‘that almost all the general methods, like vacuum evaporation, sputtering, glow discharge and even chemical methods are currently employed for the production of a-Si:H thin films. Each method has its own advantages and disadvantages. However, certain methods are generally preferred. Subsequently a detailed account of the method used here for the preparation of amorphous silicon thin films and their hydrogenation is presented. The metal chamber used for the electrical and dielectric measurements is also described. A brief mention is made-on the electrode structure, film area and film geometry. |

Abstract: | This thesis Entitled Electrical switching studies on the thin flims of polyfuran and polyacrylonitrile prepared by plasma polymerisation and vacuum evaporated amorphous silicon.A general introduction to the switching and allied phenomena is presented. Subsequently, developments of switching in thin films are described. The Mott transition is qualitatively presented. The working of a switching transitor is outlined and compared to the switching observed in thin films. Characteristic parameters of switching such as threshold voltage, time response to a, voltage pulse, and delay time are described. The various switching configurations commonly used are discussed. The mechanisms used to explain the switching behaviour like thermal, electrothermal and purely electronic are reviewed. Finally the scope, feasibility and the importance of polymer thin films in switching are highlighted. |

Abstract: | Eventhough a large number of schemes have been proposed and develoned for N9 laser ouined dye lasers the relatively low efficiency compelled the scientists to device new methods to improve the system efficiencs. Energy transfer mechanism has been shown to he a convenien tool for the enhancement of efficiency of dye lasers. Th p resent work covers a detailed study of the performance characteristics of a N2 laser pumped dye laser in the con— ventional mode and also, when pumped by the energy transfer mechanism. For .th.e present investigations a dye laser pumped by a'N2 laser (A4200 kw peak power) was fabricated. The grating at grazing incidence was used as the beam expanding device; A t its best performance the system was giving an output peak power of l5 kW for a 5 X lC"3H/l Rh—€ solution in methanol. T he conversion efficiency was 7.5; The output beam was having 3 divergence of 2 mrad and bandwidth o.9 A. Suitable modifications were suggested for obtaining better conversion efficiency and bandwidth. |

Abstract: | Due to the great versatility of the properties of polymer thin films, special interest has been taken in recent years on their preparation and electrical properties. The present thesis is entirely devoted to the study of the formation, structure and electrical properties of plasma» polymerised polyacrylonitrile (PAN) thin films. Eventhough the studies are confined to a single polymer film, the results in general are applicable to similar polar polymer films. |

Abstract: | Laser-induced damage is the principal limiting constraint in the design and operation of high-power laser systems used in fusion and other high-energy laser applications. Therefore, an understanding of the mechanisms which cause the radiation damage to the components employed in building a laser and a knowledge of the damage threshold of these materials are of great importance in designing a laser system and to operate it without appreciable degradation in performance. This thesis, even though covers three distinct problems for investigations using a dye Q-switched multimode Nd:glass laser operating at 1062 nm and emitting 25 ns (FWHM) pulses, lays its main thrust on damage threshold studies on thin films. Using the same glass laser two-photon excited fluorescence in rhodamine 6G and generation and characterisation of a carbon plasma have also been carried out. The thesis is presented in seven chapters. |
