Traditionally fishing was purely based on the detection of fishes. Fish shoals are detected traditionally by color, texture, turbidity, air bubbles, jumping fish or flocks of birds hovering over the school or by sea animals like sea pig and sea elephant passing near to the shoal. Locally they call this fish shoal as Pulappu etc.In the night, during the dark phase of moon, the schools are detected by the bio-luminescence of the plankton caused by the fish shoal movements. Fishermen generally avoid full moon nights for fishing.
