Abstract: | The present scenario of industrial fishing in India is that most of large trawlers are based at Visakhapatnam and congregate in the potential shrimp ground in the upper East coast of India commonly known as the Sandheads. These are outriggcr vessels operating two or four trawl nets along with a testing trawl called try net. In the early Seventies these vessels were operating on a very high economic return which was evident from the steady increase in number of outriggers over a period of twenty years. Since the total allowable catch has to be shared by all vessels including the increasing fleet, reduction per vessel output is bound to happen. Therefore some of them could not survive the competition and withdrew from the scene. The number of outriggers did not increase subsequently. However, there arose a doubt whether the existing fleet of about 180 vessels are fishing economically or whether there is any scope for further introduction of industrial vessels in the region. This study is focussing to the techno economic aspects of industrial fishing in the upper East coast of India |

Abstract: | The present study of the parasitic copepods gives the taxonomic description of thirty one species of parasites collected from various elasmobranch fishes of Kerala coast. Copepods parasitic on fishes include three sub orders, viz. poecilostomatoida, cyclopoida and siphonostomatoida. Parasitic copepods of elasmobranch fishes for the present study were collected from different fish landing centres of Kerala and by undertaking regular fishing trips. The collected parasites are identified to the species level and described. It is found that out of thirty one species, fifteen are new to science. They belong to the genera viz. Nothobomolochus Vervoot, 1962, Caligus Muller, 1785, Alebion, Kroyer, 1863, Gloipotes Steenstrup and Lutken, 1861, Pandarus Leach,1819, Perissopus Steenstrup and Lutken, 1861, Echthrogaleus Steenstrup and Lutken, 1861 and Kroyeria van Beneden, 1853. Fifteen new host records were reported. Two genera viz. Echthrogaleus and Entepherus were reported for first time from Indian waters. A new genus called Penicillus was erected. The general observations made during this study revealed certain interesting aspects of host-parasite relationship, host specificity, site specificity, adaptive modifications and geographical distribution. |

Abstract: | Present work deals with the studies on energy requirement and convervation in selected fish harvesting systems.Modem fishing is one of the most energy intensive methods of food production. Fossil fuels used for motorised and mechanised fishing are nonrenewable and limited. Most of the environmental problems that confront mankind today are connected to the use of energy in one way or another. Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries (FAO, 1995) highlights the need for efficient use of energy in the fisheries sector. Information on energy requirement in different fish harvesting systems, based on the principles of energy analysis, is entirely lacking in respect of Indian fisheries. Such an analysis will provide an unbiased decision making support for maximising the yield per unit of non-renewable energy use, from different fishery resource systems, by rational deployment of harvesting systems. In the present study, results of investigations conducted during 1997-2000 on energy requirement in selected fish harvesting systems and approaches to energy conservation in fishing, are presented along with a detailed description of the fish harvesting systems and their operation. The content of the thesis is organised into 8 Chapters. |

Abstract: | In India scientific commercial farming of Macrobrachium is yet to get a start, the major constraint being the lack of seed. Seed collection from the natural sources alone may not be sufficient, and in such cases seed production in hatcheries is inevitable. This necessitates knowledge of the reproductive biology of the species technology development for brood stock and larval rearing, and the optimum conditions required for larval development to undertake large scale seed production. The present study was taken up with the major objectives of developing a proper, simple and feasible technology for the larval rearing of Macrobrachium, with special emphasis on. mass larval rearing suitable for commercial level operations. |

Abstract: | In the present study two aspects of cephalopod fishery such as (i) landings and (ii) utilization including export of cephalopods from Indian are dealt with. Under the topic landings, craft, both traditional and mechanized and fishing techniques employed for capturing cephalopods are discussed. General trend in cephalopod landing in India and particularly south west coast, species composition, description and geographic distribution of important species of cuttle fishes, squids and octopus and the distribution and abundance of cephalopods along the continental shelf of the south west coast are also discussed. Some biological aspects like population parameters, maturation and spawning, food and feeding of the two representive species of cuttle fishes and squid viz, Sepia pharaonis and Loligo duvauceli are studied.Under utilization, general handling and processing of various frozen cephalopods products for exports and commercial operation in a typical plant are studied. The export of cephalopod products since its commencement is studied in detail and market strategy for enhancing the export are suggested. |

Abstract: | A study on the different aspects of spiny lobster fishery of south west coast of India with respect to the factors relevant to production, including conservation and management measures for putting this fishery on sound basis needs no emphasis. There are some aspects of this fishery which have not been sufficiently inquired into and some others which have been touched upon intermittantly and in a languid way. The attempt here is to throw light on these aspects from a production point of view. Emphasis is on harvest technology and the conservation and management measures and it is proposed to make a critical review of such measures in vogue in other lobster fishing countries and discuss about suitable methods for this fishery |

Abstract: | Studies on parasitic copepods from freshwater fishes are still in its infancy. In recent years, there- is a renewed enthusiasm in the study of freshwater fish parasites due to rapidly increasing aquaculture practices. The importance of diseases and their control assumes great significance because of the adverse impact of diseases on fish production and its economy. Copepods are one of the most harmful parasites of freshwater fishes. Reports on the damages caused by copepod parasites from different parts on the world are increasing alarmingly. But the information on parasitic copepods of freshwater fishes in India is quite meagre. Knowledge regarding this group of parasites, their Biology and pathology from Kerala. is lacking. The thesis consists of five chapters. The first chapter is a general introduction which deals with the review of literature on various aspects of parasitic copepods viz; systematics, life history, host-parasite relationship, ecology, pathogenicity, prophylaxis and control measures. Systematics of parasitic copepods of freshwater fishes collected during the present study forms the second chapter. The third chapter deals with the life cycle study of the new Lernaeid copepod, Lernaea osphronemi. The fourth chapter contains host-parasite relationship. ecology and treatment of ‘the’ new species of Lernaea On Osphronemus goramy. General observations and a summary of the entire work constitute the fifth chapter |

Abstract: | Detailed information on the biology of fishes is an essential prerequisite for their proper conservation, management and exploitation. An amplified knowledge on the biology isfundamentally essential to plan sound management policies for rational utilization of Nemipterid fishes along the Indian coast. Any information on the biochemical composition of fishes will be of immense use in assessing their nutritive value. The importance of understanding body composition during growth is essential in production studies. Detailed work on Nemipterid fishes has been done in other parts of the world whereas along the Indian coast_ not much work has been carried out. Hence the present investigation is undertaken on the systematics of Nemipterids available at Cochin and the biology and biochemical aspects of_N. jagonicus and_M. mesogrion |

Abstract: | Trawling, despite being heavily energy expensive, still continues to be the most energy expensive fishing method particularly so in View of the export oriented nature of the Indian seafood industry. This study therefore aims at analyzing the efficiency of trawls operation from Cochin, an important fishing center along the southwest coast of India. The analysis is made along two perspectives - economic and technological. Even though technological efficiency complement economic efficiency, in the fishing parlance, parameters like the size composition of the catch, selectivity factors, etc., will have a direct bearing on the technological qualities of the trawl, and which parameters will have a significant impact on the effective exploitation of a fishery stock. Whereas the technological analysis aims at improving the efficiency with regard to the effective utilization of fuel and fishery stocks, economic analysis ascertains the present status of the trawling operations from the commercial angle. |
