Abstract: | The aim of catalysis research is to apply the catalyst successfully in economically important reactions in an environmentally friendly way. The present work focuses on the modification of structural and surface properties of ceria and ceria-zirconia catalysts by the incorporation of transition metals. The applications of these catalysts in industrially important reactions like ethylbenzene oxidation, alkylation of aromatics are also investigated.Sol-gel method is effective for the preparation of transition metal modified ceria and ceria-zirconia mixed oxide since it produces catalyst with highly dispersed incorporated metal. Unlike that of impregnation method plugging of pores is not prominent for sol-gel derived catalyst materials. This prevents loss of surface area on metal modification as evident for BET surface area measurements. The powder X-ray diffraction analysis confirms the cubic structure of transition metal modified ceria and ceria-zirconia catalysts. The thermal stability is evident from TGA/DTA analysis. DR UV-vis spectra provide information on the coordination environment of the incorporated metal. EPR analysis ofCr, Mn and Cu modified ceria and a ceria-zirconia catalyst reveals the presence of different oxidation states of incorporated metal.Temperature programmed desorption of ammonia and thermogravimetric desorption of 2,6-dimethyl pyridine confirms the enhancement of acidity on metal incorporation. High a-methyl styrene selectivity in cumene cracking reaction implies the presence of comparatively more number of Lewis acid sites with some amount of Bronsted acid sites. The formation of cyclohexanone during cyclohexanol decomposition confirms the presence of basic sites on the catalyst surface.Mn and Cr modified catalysts show better activity towards ethylbenzene oxidation. A redox mechanism through oxometal pathway is suggested. All the catalysts were found to be active towards benzylation of toluene and a-xylene. The selectivity towards monoalkylated products remains almost 100%. The catalytic activity is correlated with the Lewis acidity of the prepared systems. The activity of the catalysts towards methylation of phenols depends on the strength acid sites as well as the redox properties of the catalysts. A strong dependence of methylation activity on the total acidity is illustrated. |

Abstract: | Vapour phase methylation of phenol is carried out over La2O3 supported vanadia systems of various composition. The structural features and physico chemical characterisation of the catalysts are investigated. Orthovanadates are formed in addition to surface vanadyl species on the metal oxide support. No V2O5 crystallites are detected. The acid base properties of the oxides are studied by Hammett indicator method and decomposition of cyclohexanol. The data are correlated with the catalytic activity and selectivity of the products. Ring alkylation is found to be predominant over these catalysts. |

Abstract: | Iron and mixed iron aluminium pillared montrnorillonites prepared by partial hydrolysis method were subjected to room temperature exchange with transition metals of the first series. The resulting materials were characterised by different spectroscopic techniques and surface area measurements. About 1-3% transition metals were incorporated into the porous network. The structural stability of the porous network was not affected by exchange. XRD and AI NMR spectroscopy evidenced the presence of iron substituted Al13 like polymers in FeAl pillared systems. Acidity and basicity benefited much as a result of metal exchange. Acidity and basicity were quantified by model reactions, viz., cumene cracking and cyclohexanol decomposition respectively. The presence of basic sites in otherwise acidic pillared clays, though diminutive in amount can be of much importance in acid base catalysed reactions. |

Abstract: | Two new complexes, [MII(L)(Cl)(H2O)2]·H2O (where M=Ni or Ru and L = heterocyclic Schiff base, 3- hydroxyquinoxaline-2-carboxalidene-4-aminoantipyrine), have been synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, FT-IR, UV–vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, FAB-MASS, TG–DTA, AAS, cyclic voltammetry, conductance and magnetic susceptibility measurements. The complexes have a distorted octahedral structure andwere found to be effective catalysts for the hydrogenation of benzene. The influence of several reaction parameters such as reaction time, temperature, hydrogen pressure, concentration of the catalyst and concentration of benzenewas tested. A turnover frequency of 5372 h−1 has been found in the case of ruthenium complex for the reduction of benzene at 80 ◦C with 3.64×10−6 mol catalyst, 0.34 mol benzene and at a hydrogen pressure of 50 bar. In the case of the nickel complex, a turnover frequency of 1718 h−1 has been found for the same reaction with 3.95×10−6 mol catalyst under similar experimental conditions. The nickel complex shows more selectivity for the formation of cyclohexene while the ruthenium complex is more selective for the formation of cyclohexane |

Abstract: | Zeolite Y-encapsulated ruthenium(III) complexes of Schiff bases derived from 3-hydroxyquinoxaline-2-carboxaldehyde and 1,2- phenylenediamine, 2-aminophenol, or 2-aminobenzimidazole (RuYqpd, RuYqap and RuYqab, respectively) and the Schiff bases derived from salicylaldehyde and 1,2-phenylenediamine, 2-aminophenol, or 2-aminobenzimidazole (RuYsalpd, RuYsalap and RuYsalab, respectively) have been prepared and characterized. These complexes, except RuYqpd, catalyze catechol oxidation by H2O2 selectively to 1,2,4-trihydroxybenzene. RuYqpd is inactive. A comparative study of the initial rates and percentage conversion of the reaction was done in all cases. Turn over frequency of the catalysts was also calculated. The catalytic activity of the complexes is in the order RuYqap > RuYqab for quinoxaline-based complexes and RuYsalap > RuYsalpd > RuYsalab for salicylidene-based complexes. The reaction is believed to proceed through the formation of a Ru(V) species. |

Abstract: | Scientists throughout the world are in search of a better methodology to reduce the use of environmentally hazardous chemicals common in industries .A significant contribution in this field is given by different redox catalysts in oxidation reactions. The oxidation of organic substrates represents one of the most important industrial chemical reactions, explaining the significant efforts invested in the research and development of new heterogeneous catalysts with increased activities and selectivities in these type reactions[l-4|. Hence liquid phase reactions like epoxidation of cylcohexene and hydroxylation of phenol were carried out with a new outlook in the challenge using CeO2/TiO;; and CuO/TiO2 catalysts denoted as TiO2-Ce as TiO2-Cu respectively in this work. Also different wt% of metals incorporated titania catalysts like 3, 6, 9 wt% CeO2/TiO; and CuO/TiO;were subjected to the present study .The interaction between metal oxides and the oxide supports have attracted much attention because of the wide applications of supported metal oxide systems[7,8]. It is well known that supported oxides of transition metals are widely used as catalysts for various reactions. Titania as well its metal modified catalysts systems afford high activity and selectivity in the liquid phase epoxidation of cyclohexene[9]. Cyclohexene epoxide is obtained as the major product during the reaction with small amounts of allylic substitution products. This chapter gives an idea about the liquid phase oxidation reactions like epoxidation of cylcohexene and hydroxylation of phenol in which many industrially important products are formed. Here discusses about the redox properties of the ceria and copper incorporated titania catalysts. The epoxidation of cyclohcxene is carried out efficiently over the prepared systems with the selective formation of cyclohexane epoxide. This reaction hints that it might be possible to create cleaner nylon chemistry. The total acidity of the prepared systems plays an important role in determining the catalytic activity in the dehydrogenation of cyclohexane and cyclohexene. Abstract: | Catalysis is an essential technology in manufacturing industries. The investigation based on supported vanadia catalysts and it’s sulfated analogues. Vanadia is a transition metal oxide and is used in oxidation reactions in chemical industry. It is more active and selective catalysts on suitable supports. The work deals with preparation of vanadia incorporated tin oxide and zirconia systems by wet impregnation. Physico-chemical characterization using instrumental techniques like BET etc. The surface acidic properties were determined by the ammonia TPD studies, Perylene absorption studies and Cumene conversion reaction. The catalytic activities of the prepared systems are tested by Friedel-Crafts benzylation of arenes and Bechmann rearrangement of Cyclohexanol oxime. Here the rector reactions are relatively rare. So to test the application of the catalyst systems for the selective oxidation of cyclohexanol to cyclohexanone and finally evaluate the catalytic activity of the systems for the vapour phase oxidative dehydrogenation of Ethylbenzene, which leads to the formation of Industrially important compound ‘styrene’ is another objective of this work |

Abstract: | The prime intension of the present work was a synthetic investigation of the preparation, surface properties and catalytic activity of some transition metal substituted copper chromite catalysts. Homogeneous co-precipitation method is employed for the preparation of catalysts. Since the knowledge about the structure and composition of the surface is critical in explaining the reactivity and selectivity of a solid catalyst. a systematic investigation of the physico-chemical properties of the prepared systems was carried out. The catalytic activity of these systems has also been measured in several oxidation reactions of industrial as well as environmental relevance. The thesis is dedicated to several aspects of chromite spinels giving emphasis to its preparation, characterization and catalytic performance towards oxidation reactions. |
