Abstract: | In the present work, structural, optical and electrical properties of indium sulfide are tuned by specific and controlled doping. Silver, tin, copper and chlorine were used as the doping elements. In2S3 thin films for the present study were prepared using a simple and low cost “Chemical Spray Pyrolysis (CSP)” technique. This technique is adaptable for large-area deposition of thin films in any required shape and facilitates easiness of doping and/or variation of atomic ratio. It involves spraying a solution, usually aqueous, containing soluble salts of the constituents of the desired compound onto a heated substrate. Doping process was optimized for different doping concentrations. On optimizing doping conditions, we tuned the structural, optical and electrical properties of indium sulfide thin films making them perform as an ideal buffer layer. |

Abstract: | This paper describes about an English-Malayalam Cross-Lingual Information Retrieval system. The system retrieves Malayalam documents in response to query given in English or Malayalam. Thus monolingual information retrieval is also supported in this system. Malayalam is one of the most prominent regional languages of Indian subcontinent. It is spoken by more than 37 million people and is the native language of Kerala state in India. Since we neither had any full-fledged online bilingual dictionary nor any parallel corpora to build the statistical lexicon, we used a bilingual dictionary developed in house for translation. Other language specific resources like Malayalam stemmer, Malayalam morphological root analyzer etc developed in house were used in this work |

Abstract: | This paper underlines a methodology for translating text from English into the Dravidian language, Malayalam using statistical models. By using a monolingual Malayalam corpus and a bilingual English/Malayalam corpus in the training phase, the machine automatically generates Malayalam translations of English sentences. This paper also discusses a technique to improve the alignment model by incorporating the parts of speech information into the bilingual corpus. Removing the insignificant alignments from the sentence pairs by this approach has ensured better training results. Pre-processing techniques like suffix separation from the Malayalam corpus and stop word elimination from the bilingual corpus also proved to be effective in training. Various handcrafted rules designed for the suffix separation process which can be used as a guideline in implementing suffix separation in Malayalam language are also presented in this paper. The structural difference between the English Malayalam pair is resolved in the decoder by applying the order conversion rules. Experiments conducted on a sample corpus have generated reasonably good Malayalam translations and the results are verified with F measure, BLEU and WER evaluation metrics |

Abstract: | Adrenergic stimulation has an inyortant role in the pancreatic It-cell proliferation and insulin secretion. In the present study. we have investigaled how sympathetic system mgulales the panrrealic n I rnerui nr ht an:ilyiing I'pinephi inn 1111 ), Norepinephrinc (NE) and /1-adrenergic receptor changes in the brain as (%eli is in the I swirls. Fill and NII showed a significant decrease in the brain regions, pancreas and plasma :rt 72Ius iller partial prurcrealectonty. We observed an increase in the circulating insulin levels at 72 hrs. Scatchard analysis using I CHI propranolol showed a significant increase in the number of loth the low affinity and high affinity t-adrenergic receplors in cerebral cortex and hypothalamus of partially pancreatectornised rats during peak DNA synthesis. The affinity of the receptors decrea,ed significantly in the low and high affinity receptors of cerebral cortex and the high affinity hypothalamic receptors. In file brain stein, low affinity receptors were increased significantly during regeneration whereas there was no change in the high affinity receptors. The pancreatic ff-adrenergic receptors were also up regulated at 72 firs after partial panerealectony. In vitro studies showed that /i-adrenergic receptors are positive regulators of islet cell proliferation and insulin secretion. Thus our results suggest that the t-adrenergic receptors are functionally enhanced during pancreatic regeneration, which in turn increases pancreatic ft-cell proliferation an(hilisulin secretion in wean hug rats. |

Abstract: | A novel technique fitr the bat dividth enhancement of conventional rectangular microstrip antenna is proposed in this paper. When a high permittivity dielectric resonator of suitable resonant frequency was loaded over the patch. the % bandwidth of the antenna was increased by more than five tunes without much affecting its gain and radiation performance. A much more improved bandwidth was obtained when the dielectric resonator was placed on the feedline. Experimental study shows a 2:1 VSWR bandwidth of more than 10% and excellent cross polarization performance with increased pass band and radiation coverage abnost the same as that of rectangular microstrip antenna |

Abstract: | Dopamine D2 receptors are involved in ethanol self- administration behavior and also suggested to mediate the onset and offset of ethanol drinking. In the present study, we investigated dopamine (DA) content and Dopamine D2 (DA D2) receptors in the hypothalamus and corpus striatum of ethanol treated rats and aldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH) activity in the liver and plasma of ethanol treated rats and in vitro hepatocyte cultures. Hypothalamic and corpus striatal DA content decreased significantly (P\0.05, P\0.001 respectively) and homovanillic acid/ dopamine (HVA/DA) ratio increased significantly (P\0.001) in ethanol treated rats when compared to control. Scatchard analysis of [3H] YM-09151-2 binding to DA D2 receptors in hypothalamus showed a significant increase (P\0.001) in Bmax without any change in Kd in ethanol treated rats compared to control. The Kd of DA D2 receptors significantly decreased (P\0.05) in the corpus striatum of ethanol treated rats when compared to control. DA D2 receptor affinity in the hypothalamus and corpus striatum of control and ethanol treated rats fitted to a single site model with unity as Hill slope value. The in vitro studies on hepatocyte cultures showed that 10-5 M and 10-7 M DA can reverse the increased ALDH activity in 10% ethanol treated cells to near control level. Sulpiride, an antagonist of DA D2, reversed the effect of dopamine on 10% ethanol induced ALDH activity in hepatocytes. Our results showed a decreased dopamine concentration with enhanced DA D2 receptors in the hypothalamus and corpus striatum of ethanol treated rats. Also, increased ALDH was observed in the plasma and liver of ethanol treated rats and in vitro hepatocyte cultures with 10% ethanol as a compensatory mechanism for increased aldehyde production due to increased dopamine metabolism. A decrease in dopamine concentration in major brain regions is coupled with an increase in ALDH activity in liver and plasma, which contributes to the tendency for alcoholism. Since the administration of 10-5 M and 10-7 M DA can reverse the increased ALDH activity in ethanol treated cells to near control level, this has therapeutic application to correct ethanol addicts from addiction due to allergic reaction observed in aldehyde accumulation. |

Abstract: | In this article, we present the spectral and nonlinear optical properties of ZnOCu nanocomposites prepared by colloidal chemical synthesis. The emission consisted of two peaks. The 385-nm ultraviolet (UV) peak is attributed to ZnO and the 550-nm visible peak is attributed to Cu nanocolloids. Obvious enhancement of UV and visible emission of the samples is observed and the strongest UV emission of a typical ZnOCu nanocomposite is over three times stronger than that of pure ZnO. Cu acts as a sensitizer and the enhancement of UV emission are caused by excitons formed at the interface between Cu and ZnO. As the volume fraction of Cu increases beyond a particular value, the intensity of the UV peak decreases while the intensity of the visible peak increases, and the strongest visible emission of a typical ZnOCu nanocomposite is over ten times stronger than that of pure Cu. The emission mechanism is discussed. Nonlinear optical response of these samples is studied using nanosecond laser pulses from a tunable laser in the wavelength range of 450650 nm, which includes the surface plasmon absorption (SPA) band. The nonlinear response is wavelength dependent and switching from reverse saturable absorption (RSA) to saturable absorption (SA) has been observed for Cu nanocolloids as the excitation wavelength changes from the low absorption window region to higher absorption regime near the SPA band. However, ZnO colloids and ZnOCu nanocomposites exhibit induced absorption at this wavelength. Such a changeover in the sign of the nonlinearity of ZnOCu nanocomposites, with respect to Cu nanocolloids, is related to the interplay of plasmon band bleach and optical limiting mechanisms. The SA again changes back to RSA when we move over to the infrared region. The ZnOCu nanocomposites show self-defocusing nonlinearity and good nonlinear absorption behavior. The nonlinear refractive index and the nonlinear absorption increases with increasing Cu volume fraction at 532 nm. The observed nonlinear absorption is explained through two-photon absorption followed by weak free-carrier absorption and interband absorption mechanisms. This study is important in identifying the spectral range and composition over which the nonlinear material acts as a RSA-based optical limiter. ZnOCu is a potential nanocomposite material for the light emission and for the development of nonlinear optical devices with a relatively small limiting threshold. |

Abstract: | Invertase was adsorbed onto micro-porous acid-activated montmorillonite clay (K-10) by two procedures, namely adsorption and covalent binding. The immobilized enzymes were characterized by XRD, surface area measurements and 27Al NMR. XRD measurements revealed an expansion of clay layers due to immobilization which suggests that intercalation had taken place. Surface area measurements also support this observation. 27Al NMR showed that interaction of enzyme with tetrahedral and octahedral Al changes with the immobilization procedure. Sucrose hydrolysis was performed in a batch reactor. The immobilized enzymes showed enhanced pH and thermal stabilities. Optimum pH and temperature were found to increase upon immobilization. The effectiveness factor (η) and Michaelis constant (Km) suggest that diffusional resistances play a major role in the reaction. The immobilized invertase could be stored in buffer of pH 5 and 6 at 5 °C without any significant loss in activity for 20 days. |

Abstract: | Ferrofluids belonging to the series NixFe1 xFe2O4 were synthesised by two different procedures—one by standard co-precipitation techniques, the other by co-precipitation for synthesis of particles and dispersion aided by high-energy ball milling with a view to understand the effect of strain and size anisotropy on the magneto-optical properties of ferrofluids. The birefringence measurements were carried out using a standard ellipsometer. The birefringence signal obtained for chemically synthesised samples was satisfactorily fitted to the standard second Langevin function. The ball-milled ferrofluids showed a deviation and their birefringence was enhanced by an order. This large enhancement in the birefringence value cannot be attributed to the increase in grain size of the samples, considering that the grain sizes of sample synthesised by both modes are comparable; instead, it can be attributed to the lattice strain-induced shape anisotropy(oblation) arising from the high-energy ball-milling process. Thus magnetic-optical (MO) signals can be tuned by ball-milling process, which can find potential applications |

Abstract: | ZnO nanoflowers were synthesized by the hydrothermal process at an optimized growth temperature of 200 ◦C and a growth/reaction time of 3 h. As-prepared ZnO nanoflowers were characterized by x-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, UV–visible and Raman spectroscopy. X-ray diffraction and Raman studies reveal that the as-synthesized flower-like ZnO nanostructures are highly crystalline with a hexagonal wurtzite phase preferentially oriented along the (1 0 1 1) plane. The average length (234–347 nm) and diameter (77–106 nm) of the nanorods constituting the flower-like structure are estimated using scanning electron microscopy studies. The band gap of ZnO nanoflowers is estimated as 3.23 eV, the lowering of band gap is attributed to the flower-like surface morphology and microstructure of ZnO. Room temperature photoluminescence spectrum shows a strong UV emission peak at 392 nm, with a suppressed visible emission related to the defect states, indicating the defect free formation of ZnO nanoflowers that can be potentially used for UV light-emitting devices. The suppressed Raman bands at 541 and 583 cm−1 related to defect states in ZnO confirms that the ZnO nanoflowers here obtained have a reduced presence of defects |

Abstract: | The paper summarizes the design and implementation of a quadratic edge detection filter, based on Volterra series, for enhancing calcifications in mammograms. The proposed filter can account for much of the polynomial nonlinearities inherent in the input mammogram image and can replace the conventional edge detectors like Laplacian, gaussian etc. The filter gives rise to improved visualization and early detection of microcalcifications, which if left undetected, can lead to breast cancer. The performance of the filter is analyzed and found superior to conventional spatial edge detectors |

Abstract: | The high-affinity of [3H]y-aminobutyric acid (GABA) to GABAA receptors and [3H]baclofen to GABAB receptors were studied in the cerebellum of pyridoxine-deficient rats and compared to pyridoxine-supplemented controls. There was a significant increase in the maximal binding ( Bmax) of both GABAA and GABAB receptors with no significant difference in their binding affinities (Kd). The changes observed suggest a supersensitivity of GABAA and GABAB receptors which seems to correlate negatively with the concentration of GABA in the cerebellum of pyridoxine-deficient rats. |

Abstract: | In this thesis, we explore the design, computation, and experimental analysis of photonic crystals, with a special emphasis on structures and devices that make a connection with practically realizable systems. First, we analyze the propenies of photonic-crystal: periodic dielectric structures that have a band gap for propagation. The band gap of periodically loaded air column on a dielectric substrate is computed using Eigen solvers in a plane wave basis. Then this idea is extended to planar filters and antennas at microwave regime. The main objectives covered in this thesis are:• Computation of Band Gap origin in Photonic crystal with the abet of Maxwell's equation and Bloch-Floquet's theorem • Extension of Band Gap to Planar structures at microwave regime • Predict the dielectric constant - synthesized dieletric cmstant of the substrates when loaded with Photonic Band Gap (PBG) structures in a microstrip transmission line • Identify the resonant characteristic of the PBG cell and extract the equivalent circuit based on PBG cell and substrate parameters for microstrip transmission line • Miniaturize PBG as Defected Ground Structures (DGS) and use the property to be implemented in planar filters with microstrip transmission line • Extended the band stop effect of PBG / DGS to coplanar waveguide and asymmetric coplanar waveguide. • Formulate design equations for the PBG / DGS filters • Use these PBG / DGS ground plane as ground plane of microstrip antennas • Analysis of filters and antennas using FDID method |

Abstract: | 5-Hydroxytryptamine2A (5-HT2A) receptor kinetics was studied in cerebral cortex and brain stem of streptozotocin (STZ) induced diabetic rats. Scatchard analysis with [3H] (±) 2,3dimethoxyphenyl-l-[2-(4-piperidine)-methanol] ([3H]MDL100907) in cerebral cortex showed no significant change in maximal binding (Bmax) in diabetic rats compared to controls. Dissociation constant (K) of diabetic rats showed a significant decrease (p < 0.05) in cerebral cortex, which was reversed to normal by insulin treatment. Competition studies of [3H]MDL100907 binding in cerebral cortex with ketanserin showed the appearance of an additional low affinity site for 5-HT2A receptors in diabetic state, which was reversed to control pattern by insulin treatment. In brain stem, scatchard analysis showed a significant increase (p < 0.05) in Bmax accompanied by a significant increase (p < 0.05) in Kd. Competition analysis in brain stem also showed a shift in affinity towards a low affinity State for 5-HT2A receptors. All these parameters were reversed to control level by insulin treatment. These results show that in cerebral cortex there is an increase in affinity of 5-HT2A receptors without any change in its number and in the case of brain stem there is an increase in number of 5HT2A receptors accompanied by a decrease in its affinity during diabetes. Thus, from the results we suggest that the increase in affinity of 5-HT2A receptors in cerebral cortex and upregulation of 5-HT2A receptors in brain stem may lead to altered neuronal function in diabetes. |

Abstract: | The broad objective of the study is to find out the management practices followed in the rubber estates in India. Comparing the management practices followed in the estates belonging to Indian and non-Indian companiess is also an objective. It has been widely held that the management practices followed in the estates belonging to these groups vary considerably. Hence attempt is made to find out the divergence between them in regard to various practices and to identify and bring them into broader relief so that the strong points of each would be emulated by the other. The management practices are examined in the light of well-established management principles and techniques adopted in business and industry. The principles of management which are widely accepted are Planning, Organizing, Staffing, Directing and Controlling. Other management principles and techniques relating to personnel - finance, marketing, materials and transporting - are also examined in the appropriate context |
