Abstract: | The electrical conductivity and thermal diffusivity of pristine and iodine doped vanadyl naphthalocyanine (VONc) were studied. In the pristine sample, the temperature dependence was very weak below 300 K. The increase in conductivity at higher temperature must be due to an enhancement in carrier density with increase in thermal energy. The electrical conductivity of VONc increased when doped with iodine. The behavior of VONcI indicated that considerable changes have occurred in the electronic environment of the molecule as a result of doping. Iodine doping enhanced the thermal diffusivity of VONc. The increase in thermal diffusivity of the iodine doped sample may be due to the disorder of iodine atoms occupying the channels in one dimensional lattices. |

Abstract: | The acoustic signals generated in solids due to interaction with pulsed laser beam is used to determine the ablation threshold of bulk polymer samples of teflon (polytetrafluoroethylene) and nylon under the irradiation from a Q-switched Nd:YAG laser at 1.06µm wavelength. A suitably designed piezoelectric transducer is employed for the detection of photoacoustic (PA) signals generated in this process. It has been observed that an abrupt increase in the amplitude of the PA signal occurs at the ablation threshold. Also there exist distinct values for the threshold corresponding to different mechanisms operative in producing damages like surface morphology, bond breaking and melting processes at different laser energy densities. |

Abstract: | In this communication, we discuss the details of fabricating an off-line fibre optic sensor (FOS) based on evanescent wave absorption for detecting trace amounts of Fe3+ in water. Two types of FOS are developed; one type uses the unclad portion of a multimode silica fibre as the sensing region whereas the other employs the microbent portion of a multimode plastic fibre as the sensing region. Sensing is performed by measuring the absorption of the evanescent wave in a reagent medium surrounding the sensing region. To evaluate the relative merits of the two types of FOS in Fe3+ sensing, a comparative study of the sensors is made, which reveals the superiority of the latter in many respects, such as smaller sensing length, use of a double detection scheme (for detecting both core and cladding modes) and higher sensitivity of cladding mode detection at an intermediate range of concentration along with the added advantage that plastic fibres are inexpensive. A detection limit of 1 ppb is observed in both types of fibre and the range of detection can be as large as 1 ppb–50 ppm. All the measurements are carried out using a LabVIEW set-up. |

Abstract: | The design and development of an evanescent wave sensor to determine the etching rate of the core of an optical fibre is discussed in this paper. The working of the device is based on the principle of propagation and loss of the evanescent wave in the cladding region of the fibre. The fraction of light intensity creeping out of the core of an uncladded fibre is a function of the core radius. As this radius decreases, the evanescent wave coupling to the medium surrounding the core enhances. This results in a decrease of the transmitted light intensity through the fibre. This technique is useful to design and fabricate optical fibres with different core geometries. |

Abstract: | We analyse numerically the bifurcation structure of a two-dimensional noninvertible map and show that different periodic cycles are arranged in it exactly in the same order as in the case of the logistic map. We also show that this map satisfies the general criteria for the existence of Sarkovskii ordering, which supports our numerical result. Incidently, this is the first report of the existence of Sarkovskii ordering in a two-dimensional map. |

Abstract: | Excitation and emission spectra of SrS : Mn : Ce phosphors have been studied in detail at various Mn and Ce concentrations. In order to study the effect of external pressure on phosphors, the samples were pretreated under various pressures. Four bands around 470 nm, 530 nm, 310 nm and 620 nm were observed, when the samples were excited with 265 nm radiation. The effect of pressure is to reduce the fluorescence ability of the phosphors, and the luminescence vanishes above O· 1 ton m-2 pressure. The fluorescence ability, however, can be regained on retiring the sample. The emission mechanism has been attributed to two luminescentcenters in the forbidden gap. An appreciable amount of photocurrent has also been observed for the sample. |

Abstract: | Dependence of energy transfer parameters on excitation wavelength has been investigated in poly (methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) optical fibre preforms doped with C 540:Rh B dye mixture by studying the fluorescence intensity and the lifetime variations. A fluorescence spectrophotometer was used to record the excitation spectra of the samples for the emission wavelengths 495 and 580 nm. The fluorescence emission from the polymer rods was studied at four specific excitation wavelengths viz; 445, 465, 488 and 532 nm. The fluorescence lifetime of the donor molecule was experimentally measured in polymer matrix by time correlated single photon counting technique. The energy transfer rate constants and transfer efficiencies were calculated and their dependence on the acceptor concentration was analysed for three excitation wavelengths. It was found that any change in the excitation wavelength leads to significant variations in the quenching characteristics, which in turn affect the calculated energy transfer parameters. |

Abstract: | In this paper, the fluorescence behaviour of nano colloids of ZnO has been studied as a function of the excitation wavelength. We have found that excitation at the tail of the absorption band gives rise to an emission that shifts with the change of the excitation wavelength. The excitation wavelength dependent shift of the fluorescence maximum is measured to be between 60 and 100 nm. This kind of excitation wavelength dependent fluorescence behaviour, which may appear to be in violation of Kasha’s rule of excitation wavelength independence of the emission spectrum, has been observed for nano ZnO colloids prepared by two different chemical routes and different capping agents. It is shown that the existence of a distribution of energetically different molecules in the ground state coupled with a low rate of the excited state relaxation processes, namely, solvation and energy transfer, are responsible for the excitation wavelength dependent fluorescence behaviour of the systems. |

Abstract: | We present the analytical investigations on a logistic map with a discontinuity at the centre. An explanation for the bifurcation phenomenon in discontinuous systems is presented. We establish that whenever the elements of an n-cycle (n > 1) approach the discontinuities of the nth iterate of the map, a bifurcation other than the usual period-doubling one takes place. The periods of the cycles decrease in an arithmetic progression, as the control parameter is varied. The system also shows the presence of multiple attractors. Our results are verified by numerical experiments as well. |

Abstract: | Optical limiting and thermal lensing studies are carried out in C70–toluene solutions. The measurements are performed using 9-ns pulses generated from a frequencydoubled Nd:YAG laser at 532 nm. Optical limiting studies in fullerene molecules lead to the conclusion that reverse saturable absorption is the major mechanism for limiting. Analysis of thermal lensing measurements showed a quadratic dependence of thermal lens signal on incident laser energy, which also supports the view that optical limiting in C70 arises due to sequential two-photon absorption via excited triplet state (reverse saturable absorption). |

Abstract: | The fabrication and characterization of a Rhodamine 6G-doped polymer optical fiber amplifier have been carried out. Two different schemes were employed to characterize the optical fiber: the stripe illumination technique to study the fiber as a gain medium and another technique to study its performance as an amplifier. We observed a spectral narrowing from 42 to 7 nm when the pump energy was increased to 6 mJ in the stripe illumination geometry. A gain of 18 dB was obtained in the amplifier configuration. The effects of pump power and dye concentration on the performance of the fiber as an amplifier were also studied. |

Abstract: | Rhodamine 6G and Rhodamine B dye mixture doped polymer optical fiber amplifier (POFA), which can operate in a broad wavelength region (60 nm), has been successfully fabricated and tested. Tunable operation of the amplifier over a broad wavelength region is achieved by mixing different ratios of the dyes. The dye doped POFA is pumped axially using 532 nm, 10 ns laser pulses from a frequency doubled Q-switched Nd: YAG laser and the signals are taken from an optical parametric oscillator. A maximum gain of 22.3 dB at 617 nm wavelength has been obtained for a 7 cm long dye mixture doped POFA. The effects of pump energy and length of the fiber on the performance of the fiber amplifier are also studied. There exists an optimum length for which the amplifier gain is at a maximum value. |

Abstract: | The dynamics of plasma plume, formed by the laser-blow-off of multicomponent LiF-C thin film under various ambient pressures ranging from high vacuum to argon pressure of 3 Torr, has been studied using fast imaging technique. In vacuum, the plume has ellipsoidal shape. With the increase in the ambient pressure, sharp plume boundary is developed showing a focusing-like confinement in the lateral space behavior in the front end, which persists for long times. At higher ambient pressure (> 10−1 Torr ), structures are developed in the plasma plume due to hydrodynamic instability/turbulences. |

Abstract: | A simple, effective and inexpensive fiber optic sensor for investigating the setting characteristics of various grades of cement is described. A finite length of unsheathed multimode optical fiber laid inside the cement mix, is subjected to stress during the setting process. The microbends created on the fiber due to this stress directly influence the intensity of light propagating through the fiber. Continuous monitoring of such variations in the light output transmitted through the fiber gives a clear measure of the setting characteristics of the cement mix, thus providing a simple and elegant technique of great practical importance in the field of civil engineering. The smart fiber optic sensor described above can be incorporated into a building during the construction process itself so that continuous monitoring of the deterioration process for the entire life time of the building can be carried out. |

Abstract: | A novel sensing technique for the in situ monitoring of the rate of pulsed laser deposition (PLD) of metal thin films has been developed. This optical fibre based sensor works on the principle of the evanescent wave penetration of waveguide modes into the uncladded portion of a multimode fibre. The utility of this optical fibre sensor is demonstrated in the case of PLD of silver thin films obtained by a Q-switched Nd:YAG laser which is used to irradiate a silver target at the required conditions for the preparation of thin films. This paper describes the performance and characteristics of the sensor and shows how the device can be used as an effective tool for the monitoring of the deposition rate of silver thin films.
