Abstract: | Voltammetric methods are applicable for the determination of a wide variety of both organic and inorganic species. Its features are compact equipment, simple sample preparation, short analysis time, high accuracy and sensitivity. Voltammetry is especially suitable for laboratories in which only a few parameters have to be monitored with a moderate sample throughput. Of various electrode materials, glassy carbon electrode is particularly useful because of its high electrical conductivity, impermeability to gases, high chemical resistance, reasonable mechanical and dimensional stability and widest potential range of all carbonaceous electrodes. Electrode modification is a vigorous research area by which the electrochemical determination of various analyte species is facilitated. The scope of pharmaceutical analysis includes the analytical investigation of pure drug, drug formulations, impurities and degradation products of drugs, biological samples containing the drugs and their metabolites with the aim of obtaining data that can contribute to the maximal efficacy and maximal safety of drug therapy. This thesis presents the modification of glassy carbon electrode using metalloporphyrin and dyes and subsequently using these modified electrodes for the determination of various pharmaceuticals. The thesis consists of 9 chapters. |

Abstract: | The development of electrochemical sensors is currently one of the active areas of research in analytical chemistry.Voltammetric sensors as an important class of electrochemical sensors are extensively used in pharmaceutical applications. In voltammetric analysis, many active compounds in dosage forms,in contrast to excipients, can be readily oxidised or reduced at the electrode surface by applying a potential.Chemically modified electrodes have great significance in the electrochemical determination of pharmaceuticals. The modification of electrode results in efficient determination of electroactive species at very lower potential without any major interferences. The present study involves the fabrication of 8 voltammetric sensors for the drugs Metronidazole Benzoate, Sulfamethoxazole, Acyclovir, Pam Chloride , Trimethoprim , Tamsulosin Hydrochloride and Ceftriaxone Sodium. Two sensors were developed for the drug tamsulosin hydrochloride while one sensor each was developed for the other drugs. |

Abstract: | Electroanalytical techniques represent a class of powerful and versatile analytical method which is based on the electrical properties of a solution of the analyte when it is made part of an electrochemical cell. They offer high sensitivity, accuracy, precision and a large linear dynamic range. The cost of instrumentation is relatively low compared to other instrumental methods of analysis. Many solid state electrochemical sensors have been commercialised nowadays. Potentiometry is a very simple electroanalytical technique with extraordinary analytical capabilities. Since valinomycin was introduced as an ionophore for K+, Ion Selective Electrodes have become one of the best studied and understood analytical devices. It can be used for the determination of substances ranging from simple inorganic ions to complex organic molecules. It is a very attractive option owing to the wide range of applications and ease of the use of the instruments employed. They also possess the advantages of short response time, high selectivity and very low detection limits. Moreover, analysis by these electrodes is non-destructive and adaptable to small sample volumes. It has become a standard technique for medical researchers, biologists, geologists and environmental specialists. This thesis presents the synthesis and characterisation of five ionophores. Based on these ionophores, nine potentiometric sensors are fabricated for the determination of ions such as Pb2+, Mn2+, Ni2+, Cu2+ and Sal- ion (Salicylate ion). The electrochemical characterisation and analytical application studies of the developed sensors are also described. The thesis is divided into eight chapters |

Abstract: | Potentiometric chemical sensors,an important class of electro-chemical sensors are widely used in pharmaceutical analysis because of its inherent advantages. The present study was aimed at fabrication of potentiometric sensors for the drugs mebendazole, pefloxacin, ambroxol, sildenafil citrate,dextro-methorphan and tetracycline.A total of 18 sensors have been developed for the determination of theses drugs. The major step in the fabrication of the sensor was the preparation of the ion association. Two types of sensors viz:PVC membrane sensor and carbon paste electode (CPE) were fabricated. The response characteristics of the different sensors fabricated were studied.Various response parameters studied include response time, selectivity and the effect of pH.The developed sensors were also employed for the determination of the drugs in pharmaceutical formulations and also for the recovery of the drug from urine samples. The selectivity studies reveal that the developed sensors are highly selective to the drug even in prescence of foreign ions. |

Abstract: | Voltammetric sensors are an important class of electrochemical sensors in which the analytical information is obtained from the measurement of current obtained as a result of electrochemical oxidation/reduction.This current is proportional to the concentration of the analyte.Chemically modified electrodes(CMEs) have great significance as important analytical tools for the electrochemical determination of pharmaceuticals. The modification of electrode results in efficient determination of electro-active biomolecules at very lower potential without its major interferences. The operation mechanism of CMEs depends on the properties of the modifier materials that are used to promote selectivity towards the target analytes.Modified electrodes can be prepared by deposition of various compounds such as organic compounds ,conducting polymers, metal oxides, etc. on the various electrode surfaces. The thesis presents the development ,electrochemical characterization and analytical application studies of eight voltammetric sensors developed for six drugs viz.,Ambroxol,Sulfamethoxazole,PAM Chloride, Lamivudine,Metronidazole and Nimesulide. The modification techniques adopted as part of the present work include Multiwalled Carbon Nanotube(MWCNT) based modification.Electropolymerisation and Gold Nanoparticle (AuNP) based modifications. |

Abstract: | In many fields such as earth science biology, environment and electronics, the knowledge about elemental distributions and chemical speciation is important. The determination of metal levels especially the toxic ones both in the environment and in biological materials are increasingly demanded by the society.Ion selective sensors have become one of the most effective ad powerful means for analytical scientists for the trace level monitoring of metal ions. The wide range of applications ,low material requirements and simplicity of analytical procedure have not only brought ion-selective electrodes in to the lime light of analytical chemistry, but have promoted their use as tools for physiologists, medical researchers, biologists, geologists, environmental protection specialists etc.Potentiometric ion-selective sensors have been developed for the determination of lanthanide ions such as La3+,Nd3+,Pr3+,Sm3+, and Gd3+.The sensors fabricated include both PVC membrane sensor and chemically modified carbon paste sensor. Abstract: | Polymer supports and polymeric complexes are highly versatile and they are successfully employed as efficient reagents, substrates and catalysts. Recently there observed a growing interest in the synthesis of tailor-made polymer supports and functionalized polymers for the preparation of metal complexes for various applications. They have the combination of properties due to the macromolecular structure as well as due to the reactivity of the functional group. An interesting feature of functional polymers is their affinity towards metal ions. Therefore the synthesis, characterization and application of such polymeric complexes have great scientific and analytical importance. In this investigation three series of polymeric complexes of transition metal ions are prepared from three schiff bases. All the complexes and polymeric schiff bases were characterized by analytical, spectral and thermal methods The thesis consist of six chapters. The first chapter contains an introduction and a brief review on application of polymer supports, polymer supported ligands and complexes. The second chapter gives the details of reagents and instruments used and the procedure adopted for the preparation of ligands and complexes. The third chapter explains the methods employed for characterization and the results are also discussed. The fourth chapter gives a detailed study of metal ion removal using ligands whereas the fifth chapter describes the development of the Cu” ion sensor electrode. The sixth chapter is the summary of the thesis and references are presented at the end. |
