TKDL

The main objective of this proposal is to explore the science behind the traditional knowledge of the fisherman’s community in their daily life such as prediction of the availability of fish species, whether forecasting, anticipation of problems, disaster warning, general fish habitat, medical applications of marine species, etc from their experience and knowledge transferred through generations for the improved, sustainable coastal resource management. This grandma’s knowledge will be documented and linked with scientific knowledge by developing a Traditional Knowledge digital Library (TKDL) of coastal resources. The collection of this TKDL may include data on indigenous ecological fishing, fish preservation know how, Traditional fishing and catching devices, design, traditional craft & gear, details of fish behavior, fishing history, Impact of climate change in fish habitat, pharmacological applications of living and nonliving marine species, State of the sea and its effect in the fish habitat, Kadalkodathi, Traditional knowledge for tidal waves, timely netting, trapping, line fishing (hooking), simple manual techniques etc. This TKDL is also useful for the fishermen and scientific community in the similar temperate/ecological zone in global level. It supports linking local knowledge to available scientific knowledge to analyze and describe changes in the pressures between [environmental policy], social challenges, food security and technological innovation. Medical applications etc.
