Blends of chlorobutyl rubber (CIIR) with two grades of ethylene-propylene diene
monomer rubber (EPDM) were prepared and the effect of blend ratio on the cure
characteristics, hot air ageing resistance, steam ageing resistance, and mechanical
properties were evaluated. The blend of CIIR with EPDM grade 301 T showed
additive behavior and the blend with the other grade of EPDM (NDR 4640)
showed synergistic behavior.

Abstract:
High styrene rubber ionomers were prepared by sulfonating styrene–butadiene
rubber of high styrene content (high styrene rubber) in 1,2-dichloroethane using
acetyl sulfate reagent, followed by neutralization of the precursor acids using methanolic
zinc acetate. The ionomers were characterized using X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy,
Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), nuclear magnetic resonance
spectroscopy (NMR), dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA), and also by the evaluation
of mechanical properties. The FTIR studies of the ionomer reveal that the sulfonate
groups are attached to the benzene ring. The NMR spectra give credence to this
observation. Results of DMA show an ionic transition (Ti) in addition to glass–rubber
transition (Tg). Incorporation of ionic groups results in improved mechanical properties

Zinc salts of ethyl, isopropyl, and butyl xanthates are prepared
in the laboratory, and the effect of these xanthates with zinc diethyl
dithiocarbamate (ZDC) on the vulcanization of HAF-filled nitrile butadiene
rubber (NBR) compounds has been studied at different temperatures. The cure
times of these compounds have been compared with that of NBR compounds
containing TMTD/MBTS. The rubber compounds with the three xanthate
accelerators and ZDC are cured at various temperatures from 60 to 150°C.
The sheets are molded and properties such as tensile strength, tear strength,
cross-link density, elongation at break, compression set, abrasion resistance,
flex resistance, etc. have been evaluated. The properties show that zinc salt
of the xanthate/ZDC accelerator system has a positive synergistic effect on the
cure rate and mechanical properties of NBR compounds.

Abstract:
Filled and gum compounds of Isobutylene-Isoprene rubber were extruded through a
laboratory extruder at various feeding rates, different temperatures and revolutions per
minute. The extruded compounds were vulcanized up to their optimum cure times and
the mechanical properties of the vulcanizates were determined. The properties suggest
that there is a particular feeding rate in the starved fed region, which results in maximum
mechanical properties. The study shows that running the extruder at a slightly
starved condition is an attractive means of improving the physical properties.
Gum and filled compounds of styrene-butadiene rubber are extruded
through a laboratory extruder by varying the feeding rase at different temperatures
and screw speed (rpm). The extruded compounds are vulcanized
up4o their optimum cure times and the mechanical properties of the vulcanizates
are determined. From the properties data obtained it Is concluded that
there is a specific feeding rate wit in the starved fed region, which results In
maximum Improved mechanical properties . The enhancement In properties
is found to be due to better thermal and shear homogeneity.

Abstract:
Cure characteristics and mechanical properties of acrylonitrile
butadiene rubber/reclaimed rubber blends were studied. Minimum torque,
(ma)dmum -minimum) torque, scorch time, cure time and cure rate decreased in
presence of reclaimed rul3ber. Tensile strength, elongation at break and
compression set increased'with increase in reclaim content. Resilience and
abrasion resistance decreased with reclaim loading. Heat build up was higher for
the blends. The ageing resistance of the blends was inferior to that of the gum
compound.

Abstract:
Acrylonitrile butadiene rubber (NBR) matrix was reinforced with
different levels of short nylon fiber loading. Cure characteristics and mechanical
properties of composites in longitudinal and transverse directions have been
studied. Cure time was reduced while processability, as indicated by the
minimum torque, was marginally reduced with increase in fiber loading. Tensile
and tear properties improved with fiber concentration and the values were
higher in longitudinal direction of fiber orientation. Abrasion resistance,
resilience and compression set were increased in presence of fibers. Elongation
at break values showed a drastic drop on introduction of fibers. Heat build up
was higher for composites.
Carbon Black is incorporated In natural rubber latex in , the presence of
polyethylene glycol. The dispersion of carbon blade in the vulcanizatea is
analyzed using polaroid M.4 land camera The mechanical properties of the
carbon black meeterbatched NR/SBR blend Is compared with that of conventional
NR/SBR blend before and after ageing , The resilience, flex resistance
and hardness are found to be superior for N-LCMISBR compounds.
The compression set and abrasion resistance are comparable for both types
of blends . The processebiity and die swell of these blends at different shear
rates are also compared.
Latex waste products contain rubber hydrocarbon of very high
quality, which is only lightly cross linked. Selected wastes such as thread waste
and glove waste were modified into processable materials by a novel economic
process and thermoplastic elastomers were prepared by blending these modified
waste materials with high density polyethylene in various proportions. The
mechanical properties as well as the rheological behaviour of these blends were
evaluated and compared with those of the natural rubber-high density
polyethylene blends.
Latex waste like glove waste was effectively modified using a new reclaiming
agent, thiocarbanilide. This modified waste was blended with linear low-density
polyethylene (LLDPE) to develop a novel thermoplastic elastomer. Both uncrosslinked
and dynamically crosslinked blends were prepared and their properties
were studied. The results were found to be comparable to those of conventional
thermoplastic elastomers.
Zinc butyl xanthate [Zn(bxt)2] was prepared
in the laboratory . The effect of this xanthate with zinc
diethyl dithiocarbamate (ZDC) on the vulcanization of natural
rubber ( NR), polybutadiene rubber (BR), and NR/BR
blend has been studied at different temperatures. The
amounts of Zn (bxt)2 and ZDC in the compounds were optimized
by varying the amount of ZDC from 0 . 75 to 1.5 phr
and Zn (bxt)2 from 0 . 75 to 1 .5 phr. The cure characteristics
were also studied . HAF filled NR, BR, and NR / BR blend
compounds were cured at different temperatures from 60 to
150 C. The sheets were molded and properties such as tensile strength, tear strength, crosslink density and elongation
at break, compression set, abrasion resistance, etc. were
evaluated. The results show that the mechanical properties
of 80NR/20BR blends are closer to that of NR vulcanizates,
properties of 60NR/40BR blends are closer to BR vulcanizates,
while the 70NR/30BR blends show an intermediate
property.

Abstract:
Amine Terminated Liquid Natural Rubber (ATNR) was used as a plasticiser in filled NR and NBR
compounds replacing oil/DOP. The scorch time and cure time were found to be lowered when ATNR
was used as the plasticiser. ATNR was found to improve the mechanical properties like tensile strength,
tear strength and modulus of the vulcanizates . The ageing resistance of the vulcanizates containing ATNR
was superior compared to the vulcanizates containing oil/DOP.
Waste latex products are converted to a processabto material by a novel
economical process developed in our laboratory , It contains rubber hydrocarbon
of very high quality and Is lightly cross -linked. Styrene-butadlene
rubber is mixed with latex reclaim In different proportions . The mechanical
properties are found to be improved up to 60 percent replacement of
styrene-butadlene rubber by latex reclaim . The curing of styrene-butadiene
rubber Is found to be accelerated by the addition of latex reclaim. The
processablllty study shows that the blends can be processed similar to
SBRINR blends.

Abstract:

and thermogravimetric analysis techniques. The melting points were also determined.
The rubber compounds with different xanthate accelerators were cured at temperatures
from 30 to 150°C. The sheets were molded and properties such as tensile strength,
tear strength, crosslink density, elongation at break, and modulus at 300% elongation
were evaluated. The properties showed that all three xanthate accelerators are effective
for room temperature curing.
