| Abstract: | The results of the investigation of the magnetic and structural properties of the alloy system Fe0.75–xSi0.25Sbx, where x = 0, 0.05, 0.1, 0.15, 0.2, and 0.25 synthesized by mechanical alloying followed by heat treatment are described. The x-ray diffraction reveals that all samples crystallize in the DO3-type cubic phase structure. Substituting Fe by Sb led to a de-crease in the lattice constant and the unit cell volume. The magnetic properties are investigated by vibrating sample magnetometer and show that all the samples are ferromagnetically ordered at room temperature. The Curie temperature is found to decrease linearly from (850 ± 5) K for the parent alloy to (620 ± 5) K for the alloyith x = 0.25. The satura-tion magnetizations at room temperature and at 100 K are found to decrease with increasing the antimony concentration. The above results indicate that Sb dissolves in the cubic structure of this alloy system. |

| Abstract: | Fine particles of barium ferrite (BaFe12O19) were synthesized by the conventional ceramic technique. These materials were then characterized by the X-ray diffraction method and incorporated in the natural rubber matrix according to a specific receipe for various loadings of ferrite. The rubber ferrite composites (RFC) thus obtained have several applications, and have the advantage of molding into complex shapes. For applications such as microwave absorbers, these composites should have an appropriate dielectric strength with the required mechanical and magnetic properties. The N330 (HAF) carbon black has been added to these RFCs for various loadings to modify the dielectric and mechanical properties. In this article we report the effect of carbon black on the mechanical and dielectric properties of these RFCs. | Abstract: | Superparamagnetic nanocomposites based on g-Fe2O3 and sulphonated polystyrene have been synthesized by ion exchange process and the preparation conditions were optimized. Samples were subjected to cycling to study the effect of cycling on the magnetic properties of these composites. The structural and magnetization studies have been carried out. Magnetization studies show the dependence of magnetization on the number of ion exchange cycles. Doping of cobalt at the range in to the g-Fe2O3 lattice was effected in situ and the doping was varied in the atomic percentage range 1–10. The exact amount of cobalt dopant as well as the iron content was estimated by Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy. The effect of cobalt in modifying the properties of the composites was then studied and the results indicate that the coercivity can be tuned by the amount of cobalt in the composites. | Abstract: | Nanosized ZnFe2O4 particles containing traces of a-Fe2O3 by intent were produced by low temperature chemical coprecipitation methods. These particles were subjected to high-energy ball milling. These were then characterised using X-ray diffraction, magnetisation and dielectric studies. The effect of milling on zinc ferrite particles have been studied with a view to ascertaining the anomalous behaviour of these materials in the nanoregime. X-ray diffraction and magnetisation studies carried out show that these particles are associated with strains and it is the surface effects that contribute to the magnetisation. Hematite percentage, probably due to decomposition of zinc ferrite, increases with milling. Dielectric behaviour of these particles is due to interfacial polarisation as proposed by Koops. Also the defects caused by the milling produce traps in the surface layer contributes to dielectric permittivity via spin polarised electron tunnelling between grains. The ionic mechanism is enhanced in dielectrics with the rise in temperature which results in the increase of dielectric permittivity with temperature. |

| Abstract: | Nickel–rubber nanocomposites were synthesized by incorporating ferromagnetic nickel nanoparticles in a natural rubber as well as neoprene rubber matrix. Complex dielectric permittivity and magnetic permeability of these composites were evaluated in the X-band microwave frequencies at room temperature using cavity perturbation technique. The dielectric loss in natural rubber is smaller compared to neoprene rubber. A steady increase in the dielectric permittivity is observed with increase in the content of nickel in both the composites. The magnetic permeability exhibits a steady decrease with increase in frequency and magnetic loss shows a relaxation at 8 GHz. The suitability of these composites as microwave absorbers is modeled based on the reflection loss which is dependant on the real and imaginary components of the complex dielectric permittivity and magnetic permeability. |

| Abstract: | ZnGa2O4:Dy3+ phosphor thin films were deposited on quartz substrates by radio frequency rf magnetron sputtering and the effect of substrate temperature on its structural and luminescent properties was investigated. Polycrystalline film could be deposited even at room temperature. The crystalline behavior, Zn/Ga ratio, and surface morphology of the films were found to be highly sensitive to substrate temperature. Under UV illumination, the as-deposited films at and above 300°C gave white luminescence even without any postdeposition treatments. The photoluminescent PL emission can be attributed to the combined effect of multicolor emissions from the single luminescence center Dy3+ via host-sensitization. Maximum PL emission intensity was observed for the film deposited at 600°C, and the CIE chromaticity coordinates of the emission were determined to be x,y = 0.34, 0.31 . |

| Abstract: | Magnetic properties of nano-crystalline soft magnetic alloys have usually been correlated to structural evolution with heat treatment. However, literature reports pertaining to the study of nano-crystalline thin films are less abundant. Thin films of Fe40Ni38B18Mo4 were deposited on glass substrates under a high vacuum of ≈ 10−6 Torr by employing resistive heating. They were annealed at various temperatures ranging from 373 to 773K based on differential scanning calorimetric studies carried out on the ribbons. The magnetic characteristics were investigated using vibrating sample magnetometry. Morphological characterizations were carried out using atomic force microscopy (AFM), and magnetic force microscopy (MFM) imaging is used to study the domain characteristics. The variation of magnetic properties with thermal annealing is also investigated. From AFM and MFM images it can be inferred that the crystallization temperature of the as-prepared films are lower than their bulk counterparts. Also there is a progressive evolution of coercivity up to 573 K, which is an indication of the lowering of nano-crystallization temperature in thin films. The variation of coercivity with the structural evolution of the thin films with annealing is discussed and a plausible explanation is provided using the modified random anisotropy model |

| Abstract: | ZnGa2O4 spinel is a promising new UV transparent electronic conductor. Enhancing the electrical conductivity of this potential oxide phosphor can make it a promising transparent conducting oxide. In this paper, we have investigated the effects of processing and doping on the conductivity of semiconducting ZnGa2O4, particularly thin films. Crystalline zinc gallate thin films have been deposited on fused quartz substrates employing the pulsed laser deposition (PLD) technique at room temperature for an oxygen partial pressure of 0.1 Pa (0.001mbar). The films were found to be UV transparent, the band gap of which shifted to 4.75eV on hydrogen annealing. The band gap of the oxygen stoichiometric bulk powder samples (4.55eV) determined from diffuse reflection spectrum (DRS) shifted to 4.81eV on reduction in a hydrogen atmosphere. The electrical conductivity improved when Sn was incorporated into the ZnGa2O4 spinel. The conductivity of ZnGa2O4:Sn thin films was further improved on reduction. |

| Abstract: | Heterojunction diodes of n-type ZnO/p-type silicon (100) were fabricated by 12 pulsed laser deposition of ZnO films on p-Si substrates in oxygen ambient at 13 different pressures. These heterojunctions were found to be rectifying with a 14 maximum forward-to-reverse current ratio of about 1,000 in the applied 15 voltage range of -5 V to +5 V. The turn-on voltage of the heterojunctions was 16 found to depend on the ambient oxygen pressure during the growth of the ZnO 17 film. The current density–voltage characteristics and the variation of the 18 series resistance of the n-ZnO/p-Si heterojunctions were found to be in line 19 with the Anderson model and Burstein-Moss (BM) shift. |

| Abstract: | ZnO nanoflowers were synthesized by the hydrothermal process at an optimized growth temperature of 200 ◦C and a growth/reaction time of 3 h. As-prepared ZnO nanoflowers were characterized by x-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, UV–visible and Raman spectroscopy. X-ray diffraction and Raman studies reveal that the as-synthesized flower-like ZnO nanostructures are highly crystalline with a hexagonal wurtzite phase preferentially oriented along the (1 0 1 1) plane. The average length (234–347 nm) and diameter (77–106 nm) of the nanorods constituting the flower-like structure are estimated using scanning electron microscopy studies. The band gap of ZnO nanoflowers is estimated as 3.23 eV, the lowering of band gap is attributed to the flower-like surface morphology and microstructure of ZnO. Room temperature photoluminescence spectrum shows a strong UV emission peak at 392 nm, with a suppressed visible emission related to the defect states, indicating the defect free formation of ZnO nanoflowers that can be potentially used for UV light-emitting devices. The suppressed Raman bands at 541 and 583 cm−1 related to defect states in ZnO confirms that the ZnO nanoflowers here obtained have a reduced presence of defects |

| Abstract: | The effect of frequency, composition and temperature on the a.c. electrical conductivity were studied for the ceramic, Ni1–xZnxFe2O4, as well as the filler (Ni1–xZnxFe2O4) incorporated rubber ferrite composites (RFCs). Ni1–xZnxFe2O4 (where x varies from 0 to 1 in steps of 0×2) were prepared by usual ceramic techniques. They were then incorporated into a butyl rubber matrix according to a specific recipe. The a.c. electrical conductivity (sa.c.) calculations were carried out by using the data available from dielectric measurements and by employing a simple relationship. The a.c. conductivity values were found to be of the order of 10–3 S/m. Analysis of the results shows that sa.c. increases with increase of frequency and the change is same for both ceramic Ni1–xZnxFe2O4 and RFCs. sa.c. increases initially with the increase of zinc content and then decreases with increase of zinc. Same behaviour is observed for RFCs too. The dependence of sa.c. on the volume fraction of the magnetic filler was also studied and it was found that the a.c. conductivity of RFCs increases with increase of volume fraction of the magnetic filler. Temperature dependence of conductivity was studied for both ceramic and rubber ferrite composites. Conductivity shows a linear dependence with temperature in the case of ceramic samples |
