Abstract:
Vibrio sp. V26 isolated from mangrove
sediment showed 98 % similarity to 16S rRNA gene
of Vibrio cholerae, V. mimicus, V. albensis and uncultured
clones of Vibrio. Phenotypically also it resembled
both V. cholerae and V. mimicus.Serogrouping, virulence
associated gene profiling, hydrophobicity, and adherence
pattern clearly pointed towards the non—toxigenic
nature of Vibrio sp. V26. Purification and characterization
of the enzyme revealed that it was moderately
thermoactive, nonhemagglutinating alkaline metalloprotease
with a molecular mass of 32 kDa. The application
of alkaline protease from Vibrio sp. V26 (APV26) in sub
culturing cell lines (HEp-2, HeLa and RTG-2) and
dissociation of animal tissue (chick embryo) for primary
cell culture were investigated. The time required for
dissociation of cells as well as the viable cell yield
obtained by while administeringAPV26 and trypsin were
compared. Investigations revealed that the alkaline
protease of Vibrio sp. V26 has the potential to be used
in animal cell culture for subculturing cell lines and
dissociation of animal tissue for the development of
primary cell cultures, which has not been reported earlier
among metalloproteases of Vibrios.

Abstract:
The phytoplankton standing crop was assessed in detail along the South Eastern
Arabian Sea (SEAS) during the different phases of coastal upwelling in 2009.During phase 1 intense upwelling was observed along the southern transects
(8◦N and 8.5◦N). The maximum chlorophyll a concentration (22.7 mg m −3) was
observed in the coastal waters off Thiruvananthapuram (8.5◦N). Further north
there was no signature of upwelling, with extensive Trichodesmium erythraeum
blooms. Diatoms dominated in these upwelling regions with the centric diatom
Chaetoceros curvisetus being the dominant species along the 8◦N transect. Along
the 8.5◦N transect pennate diatoms like Nitzschia seriata and Pseudo-nitzschia sp.
dominated. During phase 2, upwelling of varying intensity was observed throughout
the study area with maximum chlorophyll a concentrations along the 9◦N transect
(25 mg m−3) with Chaetoceros curvisetus as the dominant phytoplankton. Along
the 8.5◦N transect pennate diatoms during phase 1 were replaced by centric diatoms
like Chaetoceros sp. The presence of solitary pennate diatoms Amphora sp. and
Navicula sp. were significant in the waters off Kochi. Upwelling was waning during
phase 3 and was confined to the coastal waters of the southern transects with
the highest chlorophyll a concentration of 11.2 mg m−3. Along with diatoms,
dinoflagellate cell densities increased in phases 2 and 3. In the northern transects
(9◦N and 10◦N) the proportion of dinoflagellates was comparatively higher and was
represented mainly by Protoperidinium spp., Ceratium spp. and Dinophysis spp.

Abstract:
Considering the extent of warming in the artic region and the resultant changes in the dynamic marine enviornments there is a need to monitor the bacterial diversity in the fjord enviornments especially in terms of cultivable bacteria. The present study reports the diversity of cultivable hetrotrophic bacteria from the water and sediment samples of kongsfjord their growth responses to important enviornmental variables and ability to produce industrially important hydrolytic enzymes.

Abstract:
Present study consists the species diversity, abundance and community structure of ichthyofauna in the seagrass meadow
of Minicoy Atoll, Lakshadweep Islands. Two hundred and three species of fishes were recorded during the study, from four
stations in the Atoll. They belonged to 2 classes, 11orders, 43 families and 93 genera. Six species belonged to the class
Chondreichthyes and 197 species to Osteichthyes. Family Pomacentridae showed maximum abundance of species (22%).
Station I, having close proximity to the coral reefs, observed the maximum number of families (37) and species (129) and
that with minimum number was in station II (23 families and 52 species). Bray-Curtis similarity plot showed a similarity
range of 22 to 52%, seasonally. Station I showed highest Shannon-Wiener diversity index (H’log2) (4.22) during August and
the lowest (2.91) during June. Stations I and III showed comparatively higher abundance and diversity of fishes. Variability
in seagrass habitat structure and the interaction with coral reefs influenced the species composition and diversity of fishes in
Minicoy Atoll. The findings of the present investigation can be used as baseline information for the fishery resource
management of the region

The age and growth, length – weight relationship and relative condition factor of Gerres filamentosus (Cuvier, 1829) from Kodungallur, Azhikode Estuary were studied by examination of 396 specimens collected between May 2008 to October 2008. Here, length frequency method was used to study age and growth in fishes. L∞, K and t 0 obtained from seasonal and non - seasonal growth curves. Gerres filamentosus showed a low mortality rate (Z) 3.702 y-1. G. filamentosus has moderately low K value and long life span. The relation between the total length and weight of G. filamentosus was described as Log W = 1.321+2.5868 log L for males, Log W = 1.467 + 2.7227 log L for females and Log W = 1.481 + 2.7316 log L for sexes combined. The mean relative condition factor (Kn) values ranged from 0.9 to 1.14 for males, 0.89 to 1.11 for females and 0.73 to 1.08 for sexes combined. The length weight relationship and relative condition factor showed that the wellbeing of G. filamentosus were good. The morphometric measurements of various body parts were recorded. The morphometric measurements were found to be nonlinear and there is no significant difference observed between the two sexes.

Abstract:
A total of 34 yeast isolates were characterized from 4 water samples collected from Kongsfjord at Ny Alseund region of Norwegion Artic during the Indian Artic summer expedition of 2009.They were studied for the effect of tempereture and salt concentration on growth as well as for their ability to produce various hydrolytic enzymes at two different temperatures. Result showed that 5 out of 8 genera were common to all the stations. Cryptococcus was the predominant genera folowed by Trichosporan and Rhodotorula 82% of the yeast isolates were oxidative in nature and except filobasidium all the isolates used nitrate as a nitrogen source for growth. Yeast isolates from all the ststions showed growth at 4 and 20 degree centigarade. These temperatures were chosen as most of the bacterial and yeast isolates showed psychrotrop[hic nature. 94% of the yeast isolates showed growth at 2.0M and lipolytic activity were marginally less than 4.None of the isolates produced amylase enzymes when incubated at 4 and 20. The present study highlights the wide tolerence of the psychrotrophic yeast isolates to temperature and salinity as well as their potential in biotechnology

Abstract:
Habitat ecology and food and feeding of the herring bow crab, Varuna litterata of Cochin Backwaters, Kerala,
India were investigated for a period of one year (April 2011-March 2012). Among the 15 stations surveyed,
the crabs were found to occur only in 4 stations, which had a close proximity to the sea. Sediment analysis of
the stations revealed that the substratum of these stations is sandy in nature and is rich in organic carbon
content (0.79% to 1.07%). These estuarine crabs is euryhaline and are found to be distributed in areas with a
sandy substratum, higher organic carbon content and more tidal influx. The stomach contents analysis of crabs
examined showed that their diet included crustacean remains, plants, sand and debris, fishes, miscellaneous
group and unidentified matter. In adults and sub-adults, crustaceans formed the dominant food group, while in
juveniles, sand and debris formed the dominant group. From the present study, V. litterata was found to be a
predatory omnivore capable of ingesting both animal and plant tissues

Abstract:
Emergence of antibiotic resistance among aquaculture
pathogens has made it necessary to look into environment
friendly, effective and sustainable methods such as probiotic
and immunostimulants among others.. In the present study,
LAB were isolated from the gut of fish species namely Rastrelliger
kanagurta and analyzed for their antibacterial activity against
various fish, shrimp and human pathogens. Different LAB
species such as Lactobacillus plantarum, L. bulgaricus, L. brevis
and L. viridiscens were encountered in the gut of R. kanagurta.
Several strains showed good activity against fish, shrimp and
human pathogens. LAB from the gut of such marine species
may be developed as possible probiont for environment friendly
health management of fresh water, estuarine and marine
species currently exploited in aquaculture
