| Abstract: | Solid phase extraction (SPE) is a powerful technique for preconcentration/removal or separation of trace and ultra trace amounts of toxic and nutrient elements. SPE effectively simplifies the labour intensive sample preparation, increase its reliability and eliminate the clean up step by using more selective extraction procedures. The synthesis of sorbents with a simplified procedure and diminution of the risks of errors shows the interest in the areas of environmental monitoring, geochemical exploration, food, agricultural, pharmaceutical, biochemical industry and high purity metal designing, etc. There is no universal SPE method because the sample pretreatment depends strongly on the analytical demand. But there is always an increasing demand for more sensitive, selective, rapid and reliable analytical procedures. Among the various materials, chelate modified naphthalene, activated carbon and chelate functionalized highly cross linked polymers are most important. In the biological and environmental field, large numbers of samples are to be analysed within a short span of time. Hence, online flow injection methods are preferred as they allow extraction, separation, identification and quantification of many numbers of analytes. The flow injection online preconcentration flame AAS procedure developed allows the determination of as low as 0.1 µg/l of nickel in soil and cobalt in human hair samples. The developed procedure is precise and rapid and allows the analysis of 30 samples per hour with a loading time of 60 s. The online FI manifold used in the present study permits high sampling, loading rates and thus resulting in higher preconcentration/enrichment factors of -725 and 600 for cobalt and nickel respectively with a 1 min preconcentration time compared to conventional FAAS signal. These enrichment factors are far superior to hitherto developed on line preconcentration procedures for inorganics. The instrumentation adopted in the present study allows much simpler equipment and low maintenance costs compared to costlier ICP-AES or ICP-MS instruments. |

| Abstract: | This study was undertaken in order to upgrade blends of HDPE and PP, two of the most widely used standard plastics so as to widen their application spectrum. Dicumyl peroxide was used as the modifier for the upgradation. Optimum concentration of dicumyl peroxide required for modification was detennined by measurement of mechanical, rheological, thermal and morphological properties. Selected blends were used to prepare recyclable composites with nylon clothes by compression moulding. The composites were characterized by measurement of mechanical and thermal properties. PolyaniIine has been synthesized by an in situ doping reaction under different temperature and in the presence of inorganic dopants such as HCl H2S04, HN03, HCl04 and organic dopants such as camphorsulphonic acid [CSA], toluenesulphonic acid {TSA) and naphthalenesulphonic acid [NSA]. The variation in dielectric properties with change in reaction temperature, dopants and frequency has been studied. The effect of codopants and microemulsions on the dielectric properties has also been studied in the ISM band. The ISM band of frequencies (2-4 GHz) is of great utility in Industrial, Scientific and Medical (ISM) applications. Microwave heating is a very efficient method of heating dielectric materials and is extensively used in industrial as well as household heating applications. |

| Abstract: | The current research investigates the possibility of using single walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) as filler in polymers to impart several properties to the matrix polymer. SWNTs in a polymer matrix like poly(ethylene terephthalate) induce nucleation in its melt crystallization, provide effective reinforcement and impart electrical conductivity. We adopt a simple melt compounding technique for incorporating the nanotubes into the polymer matrix. For attaining a better dispersion of the filler, an ultrasound assisted dissolution-evaporation method has also been tried. The resulting enhancement in the materials properties indicates an improved disentanglement of the nanotube ropes, which in turn provides effective matrix-filler interaction. PET-SWNT nanocomposite fibers prepared through melt spinning followed by subsequent drawing are also found to have significantly higher mechanical propertiesas compared to pristine PET fiber.SWNTs also find applications in composites based on elastomers such as natural rubber as they can impart electrical conductivity with simultaneous improvement in the mechanical properties. |

| Abstract: | The present study on the preparation , characterization and microwave dielectric properties of AnBn-1O3n (N=5,6,8) type perovskite compounds. The explored ceramics show dielectric constant between 11 and 54,quality factor in the range 2400 to 88900 GHz and Tf in the range -73 to +231ppm/0C.Most of the investigated cation deficient hexagonal perovskites show intermediate dielectric constant with high quality factors. This study gives a general introduction about material, scientific and technological aspects of DRs.Three important ,€r ,Q and Tf, used for the DR characterization are described. The relationship of the above parameters with the fundamental material characteristics is discussed. Different modes are excited when a DR is excited with suitable microwave spectrum of frequencies .A description of analytical determination of frequencies and construction of mode charts used for sample design and mode identification are also discussed. In this study several ceramics are developed for DR purposes, very little attention has been paid to grow the single crystals. It might be due to the fact that the difficulties and time involved in the growth of single crystals, big enough to function as microwave resonators make them expensive .However single crystals of these materials may have very high Q values. It is also possible that a better understanding of the dielectric properties in relation to the structure can be arrived using single crystals. Hence one of the future directions of dielectric resonator research should be to grow good quality single crystals of the above materials. |

| Abstract: | In the present studies it is clear that Bacillus pumilus xylanase is having the characteristic suited for an industrial enzyme (xylanases that are active and stable at elevated temperatures and alkaline pH are needed). SSF production of xylanases and its application appears to be an innovative technology where the fermented substrate is the enzyme source that is used directly in the bleaching process without a prior downstream processing. The direct use of SSF enzymes in bleaching is a relatively new biobleaching approach. This can certainly benefit the bleaching process to lower the xylanase production costs and improve the economics and viability of the biobleaching technology. The application of enzymes to the bleaching process has been considered as an environmentally friendly approach that can reduce the negative impact on the environment exerted by the use of chlorine-based bleaching agents. It has been demonstrated that pretreatment of kraft pulp with xylanase prior to bleaching (biobleaching) can facilitate subsequent removal of lignin by bleaching chemicals, thereby, reducing the demand for elemental chlorine or improving final paper brightness. Using this xylanase pre-treatment, has resulted in an increased of brightness (8.5 Unit) when compared to non-enzymatic treated bleached pulp prepared using identical conditions. Reduction of the consumption of active chlorine can be achieved which results in a decrease in the toxicity, colour, chloride and absorbable organic halogen (AOX) levels of bleaching effluents. The xylanase treatment improves drainage, strength properties and the fragility of pulps, and also increases the brightness of pulps. This positive result shows that enzyme pre-treatment facilitates the removal of chromophore fragments of pulp there by making the process more environment friendly |

| Abstract: | During 1990's the Wavelet Transform emerged as an important signal processing tool with potential applications in time-frequency analysis and non-stationary signal processing.Wavelets have gained popularity in broad range of disciplines like signal/image compression, medical diagnostics, boundary value problems, geophysical signal processing, statistical signal processing,pattern recognition,underwater acoustics etc.In 1993, G. Evangelista introduced the Pitch- synchronous Wavelet Transform, which is particularly suited for pseudo-periodic signal processing.The work presented in this thesis mainly concentrates on two interrelated topics in signal processing,viz. the Wavelet Transform based signal compression and the computation of Discrete Wavelet Transform. A new compression scheme is described in which the Pitch-Synchronous Wavelet Transform technique is combined with the popular linear Predictive Coding method for pseudo-periodic signal processing. Subsequently,A novel Parallel Multiple Subsequence structure is presented for the efficient computation of Wavelet Transform. Case studies also presented to highlight the potential applications. |

| Abstract: | The present work is to impart radiopacity in various natural polymers like chitosan, natural rubber and derivatives of chitosan and to characterize it. This thesis collated the radiopaque properties of these radiopaque polymers and various technological applications in the medical field. The applications of radiopaque polymers leads to an exploitation of radiopaque properties like X-ray visibility, optical density, effective atomic number, attenuation coefficient of biopolymers like chitosan, chitosan formate, chitosan acetate, carboxy methyl chitosan and natural rubber. The radiopaqe properties of these materials highly depend upon the size, shape, amount of radiopacifier and crystallinity of the radiopaque material. Radiopaque chitosan microspheres were prepared by cross linking with glutaraldehyde followed by the encapsulation of barium sulpahte. The effect of different emulsion systems on the morphology of chitosan microspheres were studied. The study concentrates radiopaque natural rubber for shielding applications. It reveals that to improve the particle size, morphology and crystalline phase of the zinc oxide particles, a novel method for the preparation of zinc oxide is adopted. A detailed radiopacity study was done in natural rubber containing 100phr precipitated zinc oxide prepared from different zinc salts. One of the significant findings of this investigation is that NR vulcanizates containing precipitated zinc oxide (from zinc acetate) shows higher attenuation coefficient. These interesting findings reveal the applications of these natural radiopaque systems in various fields like surgical tools, medical tubings, catheters, radiation shielding,etc. |

| Abstract: | This thesis addresses one of the emerging topics in Sonar Signal Processing.,viz.the implementation of a target classifier for the noise sources in the ocean, as the operator assisted classification turns out to be tedious,laborious and time consuming.In the work reported in this thesis,various judiciously chosen components of the feature vector are used for realizing the newly proposed Hierarchical Target Trimming Model.The performance of the proposed classifier has been compared with the Euclidean distance and Fuzzy K-Nearest Neighbour Model classifiers and is found to have better success rates.The procedures for generating the Target Feature Record or the Feature vector from the spectral,cepstral and bispectral features have also been suggested.The Feature vector ,so generated from the noise data waveform is compared with the feature vectors available in the knowledge base and the most matching pattern is identified,for the purpose of target classification.In an attempt to improve the success rate of the Feature Vector based classifier,the proposed system has been augmented with the HMM based Classifier.Institutions where both the classifier decisions disagree,a contention resolving mechanism built around the DUET algorithm has been suggested. |

| Abstract: | Among the large number of photothcrmal techniques available, photoacoustics assumes a very significant place because of its essential simplicity and the variety of applications it finds in science and technology. The photoacoustic (PA) effect is the generation of an acoustic signal when a sample, kept inside an enclosed volume, is irradiated by an intensity modulated beam of radiation. The radiation absorbed by the sample is converted into thermal waves by nonradiative de-excitation processes. The propagating thermal waves cause a corresponding expansion and contraction of the gas medium surrounding the sample, which in tum can be detected as sound waves by a sensitive microphone. These sound waves have the same frequency as the initial modulation frequency of light. Lock-in detection method enables one to have a sufficiently high signal to noise ratio for the detected signal. The PA signal amplitude depends on the optical absorption coefficient of the sample and its thermal properties. The PA signal phase is a function of the thermal diffusivity of the sample.Measurement of the PA amplitude and phase enables one to get valuable information about the thermal and optical properties of the sample. Since the PA signal depends on the optical and thennal properties of the sample, their variation will get reflected in the PA signal. Therefore, if the PA signal is collected from various points on a sample surface it will give a profile of the variations in the optical/thennal properties across the sample surface. Since the optical and thermal properties are affected by the presence of defects, interfaces, change of material etc. these will get reflected in the PA signal. By varying the modulation frequency, we can get information about the subsurface features also. This is the basic principle of PA imaging or PA depth profiling. It is a quickly expanding field with potential applications in thin film technology, chemical engineering, biology, medical diagnosis etc. Since it is a non-destructive method, PA imaging has added advantages over some of the other imaging techniques. A major part of the work presented in this thesis is concemed with the development of a PA imaging setup that can be used to detect the presence of surface and subsmface defects in solid samples.Determination of thermal transport properties such as thermal diffusivity, effusivity, conductivity and heat capacity of materials is another application of photothennal effect. There are various methods, depending on the nature of the sample, to determine these properties. However, there are only a few methods developed to determine all these properties simultaneously. Even though a few techniques to determine the above thermal properties individually for a coating can be found in literature, no technique is available for the simultaneous measurement of these parameters for a coating. We have developed a scanning photoacoustic technique that can be used to determine all the above thermal transport properties simultaneously in the case of opaque coatings such as paints. Another work that we have presented in this thesis is the determination of thermal effusivity of many bulk solids by a scanning photoacoustic technique. This is one of the very few methods developed to determine thermal effiisivity directly. |

| Abstract: | The study shows that standard plastics like polypropylene and high density polyethylene can be reinforced by adding nylon short fibres. Compared to the conventional glass reinforced thermoplastics this novel class of reinforced thermoplastics has the major advantage of recyclability. Hence such composites represent a new spectrum of recyclable polymer composites. The fibre length and fibre diameter used for reinforcement are critical parameters While there is a critical fibre length below which no effective reinforcement takes place, the reinforcement improves when the fibre diameter decreases due to increased surface area.While the fibres alone give moderate reinforcement, chemical modification of the matrix can further improve the strength and modulus of the composites. Maleic anhydride grafting in presence of styrene was found to be the most efficient chemical modification. While the fibre addition enhances the viscosity of the melt at lower shear rates, the enhancement at higher shear rate is only marginal. This shows that processing of the composite can be done in a similar way to that of the matrix polymer in high shear operations such as injection moulding. Another significant observation is the decrease in melt viscosity of the composite upon grafting. Thus chemical modification of matrix makes processing of the composite easier in addition to improving the mechanical load bearing capacity.For the development of a useful short fibre composite, selection of proper materials, optimum design with regard to the particular product and choosing proper processing parameters are most essential. Since there is a co-influence of many parameters, analytical solutions are difficult. Hence for selecting proper processing parameters 'rnold flow' software was utilized. The orientation of the fibres, mechanical properties, temperature profile, shrinkage, fill time etc. were determined using the software.Another interesting feature of the nylon fibre/PP and nylon fibre/HDPE composites is their thermal behaviour. Both nylon and PP degrade at the same temperature in single steps and hence the thermal degradation behaviour of the composites is also being predictable. It is observed that the thermal behaviour of the matrix or reinforcement does not affect each other. Almost similar behaviour is observed in the case of nylon fibre/HDPE composites. Another equally significant factor is the nucleating effect of nylon fibre when the composite melt cools down. In the presence of the fibre the onset of crystallization occurs at slightly higher temperature.When the matrix is modified by grafting, the onset of crystallization occurs at still higher temperature. Hence it may be calculated that one reason for the improvement in mechanical behaviour of the composite is the difference in crystallization behaviour of the matrix in presence of the fibre.As mentioned earlier, a major advantage of these composites is their recyclability. Two basic approaches may be employed for recycling namely, low temperature recycling and high temperature recycling. In the low temperature recycling, the recycling is done at a temperature above the melting point of the matrix, but below that of the fibres while in the high temperature route. the recycling is done at a temperature above the melting points of both matrix and fibre. The former is particularly interesting in that the recycled material has equal or even better mechanical properties compared to the initial product. This is possible because the orientation of the fibre can improve with successive recycling. Hence such recycled composites can be used for the same applications for which the original composite was developed. In high temperature recycling, the composite is converted into a blend and hence the properties will be inferior to that of the original composite, but will be higher than that of the matrix material alone. |

Exchange of information or knowledge between people and through networks of people has always taken place. But the ICT has radically changed the magnitude of this exchange, and thus factors such as timeliness of information and information dissemination patterns have become more important than ever.Since information and knowledge are so vital for the all round human development, libraries and institutions that manage these resources are indeed invaluable. So, the Library and Information Centres have a key role in the acquisition, processing, preservation and dissemination of information and knowledge. ln the modern context, library is providing service based on different types of documents such as manuscripts, printed, digital, etc. At the same time, acquisition, access, process, service etc. of these resources have become complicated now than ever before. The lCT made instrumental to extend libraries beyond the physical walls of a building and providing assistance in navigating and analyzing tremendous amounts of knowledge with a variety of digital tools. Thus, modern libraries are increasingly being re-defined as places to get unrestricted access to information in many formats and from many sources.The research was conducted in the university libraries in Kerala State, India. lt was identified that even though the information resources are flooding world over and several technologies have emerged to manage the situation for providing effective services to its clientele, most of the university libraries in Kerala were unable to exploit these technologies at maximum level. Though the libraries have automated many of their functions, wide gap prevails between the possible services and provided services. There are many good examples world over in the application of lCTs in libraries for the maximization of services and many such libraries have adopted the principles of reengineering and re-defining as a management strategy. Hence this study was targeted to look into how effectively adopted the modern lCTs in our libraries for maximizing the efficiency of operations and services and whether the principles of re-engineering and- redefining can be applied towards this.Data‘ was collected from library users, viz; student as well as faculty users; library ,professionals and university librarians, using structured questionnaires. This has been .supplemented by-observation of working of the libraries, discussions and interviews with the different types of users and staff, review of literature, etc. Personal observation of the organization set up, management practices, functions, facilities, resources, utilization of information resources and facilities by the users, etc. of the university libraries in Kerala have been made. Statistical techniques like percentage, mean, weighted mean, standard deviation, correlation, trend analysis, etc. have been used to analyse data.All the libraries could exploit only a very few possibilities of modern lCTs and hence they could not achieve effective Universal Bibliographic Control and desired efficiency and effectiveness in services. Because of this, the users as well as professionals are dissatisfied. Functional effectiveness in acquisition, access and process of information resources in various formats, development and maintenance of OPAC and WebOPAC, digital document delivery to remote users, Web based clearing of library counter services and resources, development of full-text databases, digital libraries and institutional repositories, consortia based operations for e-journals and databases, user education and information literacy, professional development with stress on lCTs, network administration and website maintenance, marketing of information, etc. are major areas need special attention to improve the situation. Finance, knowledge level on ICTs among library staff, professional dynamism and leadership, vision and support of the administrators and policy makers, prevailing educational set up and social environment in the state, etc. are some of the major hurdles in reaping the maximum possibilities of lCTs by the university libraries in Kerala. The principles of Business Process Re-engineering are found suitable to effectively apply to re-structure and redefine the operations and service system of the libraries. Most of the conventional departments or divisions prevailing in the university libraries were functioning as watertight compartments and their existing management system was more rigid to adopt the principles of change management. Hence, a thorough re-structuring of the divisions was indicated. Consortia based activities and pooling and sharing of information resources was advocated to meet the varied needs of the users in the main campuses and off campuses of the universities, affiliated colleges and remote stations. A uniform staff policy similar to that prevailing in CSIR, DRDO, ISRO, etc. has been proposed by the study not only in the university libraries in kerala but for the entire country.Restructuring of Lis education,integrated and Planned development of school,college,research and public library systems,etc.were also justified for reaping maximum benefits of the modern ICTs. |
