Abstract: | Recent developments on nanostructured conducting polymer-inorganic composites systems have receieved considerable research interest owing to their unique synergestic properties compared with their individual bulk counter parts which make them promising candidates for a broad spectrum of high technological applications such as in energy conversion, electronic devices, storage, sensors, actuators, memory devices, and biomedical devices. Nanostructured conducting polymers possess unique features such as high specific surface area, high charge carrier concentration, high electrical conductivity, high mechanical flexibility, light weight, solution processability and printability over a large area which make them favourable for their high tech applications. Among the conducting polymers, polyanilline, poly(3,4-ethylene dioxy thiophene), poly(N-vinylcarbzole) are receiving much importance due to their low cost, environmental stability and unique doping mechanism. Conversely, semiconducting inorganic metal oxide such as zinc oxide and titania nanomaterials have emerged as an area of intense research interest motivated by their potential applications in electronics, non-linear optics, and magnetic devices due to their low band gap, small crystalline size and unique opto-electronic properties. In this perspective, studies on the development and applications of semiconducting polymer-inorganic metal oxide nanocomposite are interesting since it is expected to exhibit synergistic properties arising from the molecular level mixing of conducting polymer and inorganic counter parts. |

Abstract: | Various synthesis routes have been developed in recent years for the preparation of nanoparticles. One of those methods is polymer induced crystallization. The first objective of the present work was to prepare nano ZnO powder by polymer induced crystallization in chitosan solution and to characterize the material using different techniques like TEM, SEM, XRD, FTLR, UV spectroscopy, TGA, DSC etc.The second object of the study is to prepare composites using nano ZnO. It has been undertaken to explore the potential of nano ZnO as reinforcement in engineering as well as commodity thermoplastics to widen their application spectra. We selected three engineering thermoplastics like [poly ethylene terephthalate, polyamide 6, and polycarbonate] and three commodity plastics like [polypropylene, high density polyethylene, and polystyrene] for the study. To date one of the few disadvantages associated with nanoparticle incorporation has concerned toughness and impact performance. Modification of polymers could reduce impact performance. The present study also focused on whether nano ZnO can act as a modifier for thennoplastics, without sacrificing their impact strength. |

Abstract: | Sensitisation of natural rubber latex by addition of a small quantity of an anionic surfactant prior to the addition of a coacervant results in quick coagulation. The natural rubber prepared by the novel coagulation method shows improved raw rubber characteristics, better cure characteristics in gum and carbon black filled compounds and improved mechanical properties as compared to the conventionally coagulated natural rubber. Compounds based on dried masterbatches prepared by the incorporation of fluffy carbon black in different forms of soap sensitised natural rubber latices such as fresh latex, preserved field latex, centrifuged latex and a blend of preserved field latex and skim latex show improved cure characteristics and vucanizate properties as compared to an equivalent conventional dry rubber-fluffy carbon black based compound. The latex masterbatch based vulcanizates show higher level of crosslinking and better dispersion of filler. Vulcanizates based on fresh natural rubber latex- dual filler masterbatches containing a blend of carbon black and silica prepared by the modified coagulation process shows very good mechanical and dynamic properties that could be correlated to a low rolling resistance. The carbon black/silica/nanoclay tri-filler - fresh natural rubber latex masterbatch based vulcanizates show improved mechanical properties as the proportion of nanoclay increased up to 5 phr. The fresh natural rubber latex based carbon black-silica masterbatch/ polybutadiene blend vulcanizates show superior mechanical and dynamic properties as compared to the equivalent compound vulcanizates prepared from the dry natural rubber-filler (conventional dry mix)/polybutadiene blends |

Abstract: | Laser-induced damage is the principal limiting constraint in the design and operation of high-power laser systems used in fusion and other high-energy laser applications. Therefore, an understanding of the mechanisms which cause the radiation damage to the components employed in building a laser and a knowledge of the damage threshold of these materials are of great importance in designing a laser system and to operate it without appreciable degradation in performance. This thesis, even though covers three distinct problems for investigations using a dye Q-switched multimode Nd:glass laser operating at 1062 nm and emitting 25 ns (FWHM) pulses, lays its main thrust on damage threshold studies on thin films. Using the same glass laser two-photon excited fluorescence in rhodamine 6G and generation and characterisation of a carbon plasma have also been carried out. Abstract: | Modeling of chaotic systems, based on the output time series, is quite promising since the output often represents the characteristic behaviour of the total system. It has been an interesting topic for researchers over the past few years. So far, some methods are developed for the identification of chaotic systems. Because of the intense complexity of chaotic systems, the performance of existing algorithms is not always satisfactory. Application of chaotic system theory to socially relevant problems like environmental studies is the need of the hour Neural networks have the required self-learning capability to tune the network parameters (i.e. weights) for identifying highly non-linear and chaotic systems. In the present work, effectiveness of modeling a chaotic system using dynamic neural networks has been demonstrated. From the rich literature available for non-linear modeling with neural networks, the Recurrent Neural Network (RNN) structure is selected. The Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) algorithm is used to train the RNN. Further, the Expectation Maximization algorithm is used to effectively arrive at the initial states and the state covariance. Particle filter algorithm with its two important variants namely Sampling Importance Resampling (SIR) and Rao Blackwellised algorithms are also used for training the given RNN. Four standard chaotic systems, Lorenz, Rossler, Chua and Chen, are modelled with the three algorithms. The best algorithm is found to be EKF-EM based on the least mean square error criterion. Validation of RNN model with EKFEM algorithm is done in time domain by Estimation of embedding dimension, Phase plots, Lyapunov Exponents, Kaplan -Yorke dimension and Bifurcation diagrams. Analysis of the chaotic systems is also performed in the transform domain using Fourier, Wavelet and Mapped Real Transforms. viii Natural chaotic systems are analyzed based on the selected model structure and training algorithm, taken for analysis. Sunspot, Venice Lagoon and North Atlantic oscillations are the three of the natural chaotic systems modelled with the selected RNN model structure and EKF-EM algorithm. |

Abstract: | This thesis Entitled Neuronal degeneration in streptozotocin induced diabetic rats: effect of aegle marmelose and pyridoxine in pancreatic B cell proliferation and neuronal survival. Diabetes mellitus, a chronic metabolic disorder results in neurological dysfunctions and structural changes in the CNS. Antioxidant therapy is a challenging but necessary dimension in the management of diabetes and neurodegenerative changes associated with it. Our results showed regional variation and imbalance in the expression pattern of dopaminergic receptor subtypes in diabetes and its role in imbalanced insulin signaling and glucose regulation. Disrupted dopaminergic signaling and increased hyperglycemic stress in diabetes contributed to the neuronal loss. Neuronal loss in diabetic rats mediated through the expression of pattern of GLUT-3, CREB, IGF-1, Akt-1, NF,B, second messengers- cAMP, cGMP, IP3 and activation of apoptotic factors factors- TNF-a,caspase-8. Disrupted dopaminergic receptor expressions and its signaling in pancreas contributed defective insulin secretion in diabetes. Activation of apoptotic factors- TNF- a,caspase-8 and defective functioning of neuronal survival factors, disrupted second messenger signaling modulated neuronal viability in diabetes. Hyperglycemic stress activated the expression of TNF-a,caspase-8, BAX and differential expression of anti oxidant enzymes- SOD and GPx in liver lead to apoptosis. Treatment of diabetic rats with insulin, Aegle marmelose and pyridoxine significantly reversed the altered dopaminergic neurotransmission, GLUT3, GLUT2, IGF-1 and second messenger signaling. Antihyperglycemic and antioxidant activity of Aegle marmelose and pyridoxine enhanced pancreatic B cell proliferation, increased insulin synthesis and secretion in diabetic rats. Thus our results conclude the neuroprotective and regenerating ability of Aegle marmelose and pyridoxine which in turn has a novel therapeutic role in the management of diabetes. |

Abstract: | The primary objective of this work is to develop an efficient accelerator system for low temperature vulcanization of rubbers. Although xanthates are known to act as accelerators for low temperature vulcanization, a systematic study on the mechanism of vulcanization, the mechanical properties of the vulcanizates at varying temperatures of vulcanization, cure characteristics etc are not reported. Further. xanthate based curing systems are not commonly used because of their chance for premature vulcanization during processing. The proposed study is to develop a novel accelerator system for the low temperature vulcanization of rubbers having enough processing safely. lt is also proposed to develop a method for the prevulcanisation of natural rubber latex at room temperature. As already mentioned the manufacture of rubber products at low temperature will improve its quality and appearance. Also, energy consumption can be reduced by low temperature vulcanization. in addition, low temperature vulcanization will be extremely useful in the area of repair of defective products, since subjecting finished products to high temperatures during the process of repair will adversely affect the quality of the product. Further. room temperature curing accelerator systems will find extensive applications in surface coating industries. |

Abstract: | This thesis has discussed the development of a new metal ion doped panchromatic photopolymer for various holographic applications. High-quality panchromatic holographic recording material with high diffraction efficiency, high photosensitivity and high spatial resolution is one of the key factors for the successful recording of true colour holograms. The capability of the developed material for multicolour holography can be investigated. In the present work, multiplexing studies were carried out using He-Ne laser (632.8 nm). Multiplexing can be done using low wavelength lasers like Ar+ ion (488 nm) and frequency doubled Nd: YAG (532 nm) lasers, so as to increase the storage capacity. The photopolymer film studied had a thickness of only 130 Cm. Films with high thickness (~500 Cm) is highly essential for competitive holographic memories . Hence films with high thickness can be fabricated and efforts can be made to record more holograms or gratings in the material. In the present study, attempts were made to record data page in silver doped MBPVA/AA photopolymer film. Image of a checkerboard pattern was recorded in the film, which could be reconstructed with good image fidelity. Efforts can be made to determine the bit error rate (BER) which provides a quantitative measure of the image quality of the reconstructed image . Multiple holographic data pages can also be recorded in the material making use of different multiplexing techniques.Holographic optical elements (HOEs) are widely used in optical sensors, optical information processing, fibre optics, optical scanners and solar concentrators . The suitability of the developed film for recording holographic optical elements like lenses, beam splitters and filters can be studied. The suitability of a reflection hologram recorded in acrylamide based photopolymer for visual indication of environmental humidity is reported . Studies can be done to optimize the film composition for recording of reflection holograms. An improvement in the spatial resolution of PVA/acrylamide based photopolymer by using a low molecular-weight poly (vinyl alcohol) binder was recently reported . Effect of the molecular weight of the binder matrix on the holographic properties of the developed photopolymer system can be investigated.Incorporation of nanoparticles into photopolymer system is reported to enhance the resolution and improve the dimensional stability of the system . Hence efforts can be made to incorporate silver nanoparticles into the photopolymer and its influence on the holographic properties can be studied. This thesis was a small venture towards the realization of a big goal, a competent holographic recording material with excellent properties for practical holographic applications. As a result of the present research, we could successfully develop an efficient panchromatic photopolymer system and could demonstrate its suitability for recording transmission holograms and holographic data page. The developed photopolymer system is expected to have significant applications in the fields of true-color display holography, wavelength multiplexing holographic storage, and holographic optical elements. Highly concentrated and determined effort has yet to be put forth for this expectation to become a reality. |

Abstract: | From the early stages of the twentieth century, polyaniline (PANI), a well-known and extensively studied conducting polymer has captured the attention of scientific community owing to its interesting electrical and optical properties. Starting from its structural properties, to the currently pursued optical, electrical and electrochemical properties, extensive investigations on pure PANI and its composites are still much relevant to explore its potentialities to the maximum extent. The synthesis of highly crystalline PANI films with ordered structure and high electrical conductivity has not been pursued in depth yet. Recently, nanostructured PANI and the nanocomposites of PANI have attracted a great deal of research attention owing to the possibilities of applications in optical switching devices, optoelectronics and energy storage devices. The work presented in the thesis is centered around the realization of highly conducting and structurally ordered PANI and its composites for applications mainly in the areas of nonlinear optics and electrochemical energy storage. Out of the vast variety of application fields of PANI, these two areas are specifically selected for the present studies, because of the following observations. The non-linear optical properties and the energy storing properties of PANI depend quite sensitively on the extent of conjugation of the polymer structure, the type and concentration of the dopants added and the type and size of the nano particles selected for making the nanocomposites. The first phase of the work is devoted to the synthesis of highly ordered and conducting films of PANI doped with various dopants and the structural, morphological and electrical characterization followed by the synthesis of metal nanoparticles incorporated PANI samples and the detailed optical characterization in the linear and nonlinear regimes. The second phase of the work comprises the investigations on the prospects of PANI in realizing polymer based rechargeable lithium ion cells with the inherent structural flexibility of polymer systems and environmental safety and stability. Secondary battery systems have become an inevitable part of daily life. They can be found in most of the portable electronic gadgets and recently they have started powering automobiles, although the power generated is low. The efficient storage of electrical energy generated from solar cells is achieved by using suitable secondary battery systems. The development of rechargeable battery systems having excellent charge storage capacity, cyclability, environmental friendliness and flexibility has yet to be realized in practice. Rechargeable Li-ion cells employing cathode active materials like LiCoO2, LiMn2O4, LiFePO4 have got remarkable charge storage capacity with least charge leakage when not in use. However, material toxicity, chance of cell explosion and lack of effective cell recycling mechanism pose significant risk factors which are to be addressed seriously. These cells also lack flexibility in their design due to the structural characteristics of the electrode materials. Global research is directed towards identifying new class of electrode materials with less risk factors and better structural stability and flexibility. Polymer based electrode materials with inherent flexibility, stability and eco-friendliness can be a suitable choice. One of the prime drawbacks of polymer based cathode materials is the low electronic conductivity. Hence the real task with this class of materials is to get better electronic conductivity with good electrical storage capability. Electronic conductivity can be enhanced by using proper dopants. In the designing of rechargeable Li-ion cells with polymer based cathode active materials, the key issue is to identify the optimum lithiation of the polymer cathode which can ensure the highest electronic conductivity and specific charge capacity possible The development of conducting polymer based rechargeable Li-ion cells with high specific capacity and excellent cycling characteristics is a highly competitive area among research and development groups, worldwide. Polymer based rechargeable batteries are specifically attractive due to the environmentally benign nature and the possible constructional flexibility they offer. Among polymers having electrical transport properties suitable for rechargeable battery applications, polyaniline is the most favoured one due to its tunable electrical conducting properties and the availability of cost effective precursor materials for its synthesis. The performance of a battery depends significantly on the characteristics of its integral parts, the cathode, anode and the electrolyte, which in turn depend on the materials used. Many research groups are involved in developing new electrode and electrolyte materials to enhance the overall performance efficiency of the battery. Currently explored electrolytes for Li ion battery applications are in liquid or gel form, which makes well-defined sealing essential. The use of solid electrolytes eliminates the need for containment of liquid electrolytes, which will certainly simplify the cell design and improve the safety and durability. The other advantages of polymer electrolytes include dimensional stability, safety and the ability to prevent lithium dendrite formation. One of the ultimate aims of the present work is to realize all solid state, flexible and environment friendly Li-ion cells with high specific capacity and excellent cycling stability. Part of the present work is hence focused on identifying good polymer based solid electrolytes essential for realizing all solid state polymer based Li ion cells. The present work is an attempt to study the versatile roles of polyaniline in two different fields of technological applications like nonlinear optics and energy storage. Conducting form of doped PANI films with good extent of crystallinity have been realized using a level surface assisted casting method in addition to the generally employed technique of spin coating. Metal nanoparticles embedded PANI offers a rich source for nonlinear optical studies and hence gold and silver nanoparticles have been used for making the nanocomposites in bulk and thin film forms. These PANI nanocomposites are found to exhibit quite dominant third order optical non-linearity. The highlight of these studies is the observation of the interesting phenomenon of the switching between saturable absorption (SA) and reverse saturable absorption (RSA) in the films of Ag/PANI and Au/PANI nanocomposites, which offers prospects of applications in optical switching. The investigations on the energy storage prospects of PANI were carried out on Li enriched PANI which was used as the cathode active material for assembling rechargeable Li-ion cells. For Li enrichment or Li doping of PANI, n-Butyllithium (n-BuLi) in hexanes was used. The Li doping as well as the Li-ion cell assembling were carried out in an argon filled glove box. Coin cells were assembled with Li doped PANI with different doping concentrations, as the cathode, LiPF6 as the electrolyte and Li metal as the anode. These coin cells are found to show reasonably good specific capacity around 22mAh/g and excellent cycling stability and coulombic efficiency around 99%. To improve the specific capacity, composites of Li doped PANI with inorganic cathode active materials like LiFePO4 and LiMn2O4 were synthesized and coin cells were assembled as mentioned earlier to assess the electrochemical capability. The cells assembled using the composite cathodes are found to show significant enhancement in specific capacity to around 40mAh/g. One of the other interesting observations is the complete blocking of the adverse effects of Jahn-Teller distortion, when the composite cathode, PANI-LiMn2O4 is used for assembling the Li-ion cells. This distortion is generally observed, near room temperature, when LiMn2O4 is used as the cathode, which significantly reduces the cycling stability of the cells. |

Abstract: | Vibrational overtone spectroscopy of molecules containing X-H oscillators (X = C, N, O...) has become an effective tool for the study of molecular structure, dynamics, inter and intramolecular interactions, conformational aspects and substituent effects in aliphatic and aromatic compounds. In the present work, the author studied the NIR overtone spectra of some liquid phase organic compounds. The analysis of the CH, NH and OH overtones yielded important structural information about these systems. In an attempt to get information on electronic energy levels, we studied the pulsed Nd:YAG laser induced fluorescence spectra of certain organic compounds. The pulsed laser Raman spectra of some organic compounds are also studied. The novel high resolution technique of near infrared tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopy (TDLAS) is used to record the rotational structure of the second OH overtone spectrum of 2-propanol. The spectral features corresponding to the different molecular conformations could be identified from the high resolution spectrum. The whole work described in this thesis is divided into five chapters. |

Abstract: | Materials and equipment which fail to achieve the design requirements or projected life due to undetected defects may require expensive repair or early replacement. Such defects may also be the cause of unsafe conditions or catastrophic unexpected failure, and will lead to loss of revenue due to plant shutdown. Non-Destructive Evaluation (NDE) / Non Destructive Testing (NDT) is used for the examination of materials and components without changing or destroying their usefulness. NDT can be applied to each stage of a system’s construction, to monitor the integrity of the system or structure throughout its life. |

Abstract: | Photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy is an optical technique that has emerged successful in the field of semiconductor material and device characterization. This technique is quite a powerful one which gives idea about the defect levels in a material, the band gap of the material, composition as well as material quality. Over the recent years it has received an elevation as a mainstream characterization technique. This thesis is an attempt to characterize each individual layer used in a thin film solar cell with special focus on the electrical properties. This will be highly beneficial from the lab as well as industrial point of view because electrical measurements generally are contact mode measurements which tend to damage the surface. As far as a thin film solar cell is concerned, the constituent layers are the transparent conducting oxide (TCO), absorber layer, buffer layer and top electrode contact. Each layer has a specific role to play and the performance of a solar cell is decided and limited by the quality of each individual layer. Various aspects of PL spectroscopy have been employed for studying compound semiconductor thin films [deposited using chemical spray pyrolysis (CSP)] proposed for solar cell application. This thesis has been structured in to seven chapters |

Abstract: | The motivatitni for" the present work is from .a project sanctioned by TSRO. The work involved the development of a quick and reliable test procedure using microwaves, for tflue inspection of cured propellant samples and a method to monitor the curing conditions of propellant mix undergoing the curing process.Normal testing CHE the propellant samples involvecuttimg a piece from each carton and testing it for their tensile strength. The values are then compared with standard ones and based on this result the sample isaccepted or rejected. The tensile strength is a measure ofdegree of cure of the propellant mix. But this measurementis a destructive procedure as it involves cutting of the sample. Moreover, it does not guarantee against nonuniform curing due to power failure, hot air-line failure, operator error etc. This necessitated the need for the development of a quick and reliable non-destructive test procedure. |

Abstract: | This thesis presents analytical and numerical results from studies based on the multiple quantum well laser rate equation model. We address the problem of controlling chaos produced by direct modulation of laser diodes. Abstract: | In this thesis we have presented some aspects of the nonlinear dynamics of Nd:YAG lasers including synchronization, Hopf bifurcation, chaos control and delay induced multistability. We have chosen diode pumped Nd:YAG laser with intracavity KTP crystal operating with two mode and three mode output as our model system.Different types of orientation for the laser cavity modes were considered to carry out the studies. For laser operating with two mode output we have chosen the modes as having parallel polarization and perpendicular polarization. For laser having three mode output, we have chosen them as two modes polarized parallel to each other while the third mode polarized orthogonal to them. |

Abstract: | Nonlinear dynamics of laser systems has become an interesting area of research in recent times. Lasers are good examples of nonlinear dissipative systems showing many kinds of nonlinear phenomena such as chaos, multistability and quasiperiodicity. The study of these phenomena in lasers has fundamental scientific importance since the investigations on these effects reveal many interesting features of nonlinear effects in practical systems. Further, the understanding of the instabilities in lasers is helpful in detecting and controlling such effects. Chaos is one of the most interesting phenomena shown by nonlinear deterministic systems. It is found that, like many nonlinear dissipative systems, lasers also show chaos for certain ranges of parameters. Many investigations on laser chaos have been done in the last two decades. The earlier studies in this field were concentrated on the dynamical aspects of laser chaos. However, recent developments in this area mainly belong to the control and synchronization of chaos. A number of attempts have been reported in controlling or suppressing chaos in lasers since lasers are the practical systems aimed to operated in stable or periodic mode. On the other hand, laser chaos has been found to be applicable in high speed secure communication based on synchronization of chaos. Thus, chaos in laser systems has technological importance also. Semiconductor lasers are most applicable in the fields of optical communications among various kinds of laser due to many reasons such as their compactness, reliability modest cost and the opportunity of direct current modulation. They show chaos and other instabilities under various physical conditions such as direct modulation and optical or optoelectronic feedback. It is desirable for semiconductor lasers to have stable and regular operation. Thus, the understanding of chaos and other instabilities in semiconductor lasers and their xi control is highly important in photonics. We address the problem of controlling chaos produced by direct modulation of laser diodes. We consider the delay feedback control methods for this purpose and study their performance using numerical simulation. Besides the control of chaos, control of other nonlinear effects such as quasiperiodicity and bistability using delay feedback methods are also investigated. A number of secure communication schemes based on synchronization of chaos semiconductor lasers have been successfully demonstrated theoretically and experimentally. Abstract: | Present thesis has discussed the design and synthesis of polymers suitable for nonlinear optics. Most of the molecules that were studied have shown good nonlinear optical activity. The second order nonlinear optical activity of the polymers was measured experimentally by Kurtz and Perry powder technique. The thesis comprises of eight chapters. The theory of NLO phenomenon and a review about the various nonlinear optical polymers has been discussed in chapter 1. The review has provided a survey of NLO active polymeric materials with a general introduction, which included the principles and the origin of nonlinear optics, and has given emphasis to polymeric materials for nonlinear optics, including guest-host systems, side chain polymers, main chain polymers, crosslinked polymers, chiral polymers etc.Chapter 2 has discussed the stability of the metal incorporated tetrapyrrole molecules, porphyrin, chlorin and bacteriochlorin.Chapter 3 has provided the NLO properties of certain organic molecules by computational tools. The chapter is divided into four parts. The first part has described the nonlinear optical properties of chromophore (D-n-A) and bichromophore (D-n-A-A-n-D) systems, which were separated by methylene spacer, by making use of DPT and semiempirical calculations.Chapter 4: A series of polyurethanes was prepared from cardanol, a renewable resource and a waste of the cashew industry by previously designed bifunctional and multifunctional polymers using quantum theoretical approach.Chapter 5: A series of chiral polyurethanes with main chain bis azo diol groups in the polymer backbone was designed and NLO activity was predicted by ZlNDO/ CV methods. In Chapter 7, polyurethanes were first designed by computational methods and the NLO properties were predicted by correction vector method. The designed bifunctional and multifunctional polyurethanes were synthesized by varying the chiral-achiral diol compositions |

Abstract: | Interfacings of various subjects generate new field ofstudy and research that help in advancing human knowledge. One of the latest of such fields is Neurotechnology, which is an effective amalgamation of neuroscience, physics, biomedical engineering and computational methods. Neurotechnology provides a platform to interact physicist; neurologist and engineers to break methodology and terminology related barriers. Advancements in Computational capability, wider scope of applications in nonlinear dynamics and chaos in complex systems enhanced study of neurodynamics. However there is a need for an effective dialogue among physicists, neurologists and engineers. Application of computer based technology in the field of medicine through signal and image processing, creation of clinical databases for helping clinicians etc are widely acknowledged. Such synergic effects between widely separated disciplines may help in enhancing the effectiveness of existing diagnostic methods. One of the recent methods in this direction is analysis of electroencephalogram with the help of methods in nonlinear dynamics. This thesis is an effort to understand the functional aspects of human brain by studying electroencephalogram. The algorithms and other related methods developed in the present work can be interfaced with a digital EEG machine to unfold the information hidden in the signal. Ultimately this can be used as a diagnostic tool. |

Abstract: | So far, in the bivariate set up, the analysis of lifetime (failure time) data with multiple causes of failure is done by treating each cause of failure separately. with failures from other causes considered as independent censoring. This approach is unrealistic in many situations. For example, in the analysis of mortality data on married couples one would be interested to compare the hazards for the same cause of death as well as to check whether death due to one cause is more important for the partners’ risk of death from other causes. In reliability analysis. one often has systems with more than one component and many systems. subsystems and components have more than one cause of failure. Design of high-reliability systems generally requires that the individual system components have extremely high reliability even after long periods of time. Knowledge of the failure behaviour of a component can lead to savings in its cost of production and maintenance and. in some cases, to the preservation of human life. For the purpose of improving reliability. it is necessary to identify the cause of failure down to the component level. By treating each cause of failure separately with failures from other causes considered as independent censoring, the analysis of lifetime data would be incomplete. Motivated by this. we introduce a new approach for the analysis of bivariate competing risk data using the bivariate vector hazard rate of Johnson and Kotz (1975). |

Abstract: | The thesis entitled novel 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition reactions of acyclic carbonyl ylides and related chemistry embodies the results of the investigations carried out to explore the reactivity of acyclic carbonyl ylides, generated by the reaction of dicarbomethoxy carbine and aldehydes towards dipolarophiles such as activated styrenes,1,2-and 1,4-quinones. In conclusion ,we have explored the reactivity pattern of acyclic carbonyl ylides derived from dicarbomethoxycarbene and aldehyde towards activated styrenes with a view to develop a stereoselective synthesis of highly substituted tetrahydrofuran derivatives. It was also found that the ylide could be trapped by various 1,2-and 1,4-diones to form dioxolane derivatives. It is noteworthy that the cycloaddition is highly region- and stereoselective. With isatins the ylide preferentially adds to the more electrone deficient carbonyl group making it regiospecific. Hetrocyclic compounds are of pivotal importance in organic chemistry, and enormous efforts have been devoted to develop new methodologies for their synthesis. It is noteworthy in this context that, 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition reaction, otherwise called Huisgen reaction, constitutes one of the most efficient methods for the synthesis of five membered heterocycles. Among the various dipoles, carbonyl ylides have received substiancial attention in recent years largely due to their utility in the synthesis of a wide range of oxygen hetrocycles, which are often found as structural subunits of many bioactive natural products. |

Abstract: | Burgess reagent first prepared by E. M. Burgess in 1968, is a mild and selective dehydrating agent for secondary and tertiary alcohols and due to the amphipolar nature it is gainfully employed in a number of creative synthetic ventures. A close examination of the structure of Burgess reagent reveals that it can act as a 1,2-dipole. To the best of our knowledge, no attempts have been made to tap full synthetic potential of the amphipolar nature of this reagent and no reports on 1,3-dipolar addition to a σ-bond in acyclic systems are available in literature. In this context, we propose to unravel novel applications of Burgess reagent based on its amphipolar nature. Rich and multifaceted chemistry of nitrones form the basis of many successful chemical transformations used in attractive synthetic strategies. For the last 50 years special attention has been given to nitrones due to their successful application as building blocks in the synthesis of various natural and biologically active compounds. Our interest in nitrones stems out of its unique character: i.e. it is a 1,3-dipole exhibiting distinct nucleophilic activity. We reasoned that 1,3-dipole possessing significant nucleophilicity should react with amphipolar Burgess reagent with elimination of triethylamine to give the corresponding five-membered ring product by formal dipolar addition to a σ bond. To test this hypothesis we studied the reaction of nitrones with Burgess reagent. This thesis reveals our attempts to explore the [3+2] annulation reaction of nitrones with Burgess reagent which was found to be followed by a rearrangementinvolving C-to-N aryl migration, ultimately resulting in diarylamines and carbamates. We have also examined the reaction of cyanuric chloride with nitrones in DMF with a view to exploit the nucleophilicty of nitrones and to unravel the migratory aptitude, if any, observed in this reaction |

Abstract: | The aim of the investigation is to develop new high performance adhesive systems based on neoprene-phenolic blends. Initially the effect of addition of all possible ingredients like fillers, adhesion promoters, curing agents and their optimum compositions to neoprene solution is investigated. The phenolic resin used is a copolymer of phenol-cardanolformaldehyde prepared in the laboratory. The optimum ratio between phenol and cardanol that gives the maximum bond strength in metal-metal, rubber-rubber and rubber-metal specimens has been identified. Further the ratio between total phenols and formaldehyde is also optimised. The above adhesive system is further modified by the addition of epoxidized phenolic novolacs. For this purpose, phenolic novolac resins are prepared in different stoichiometric ratios and are subsequently epoxidized. The effectiveness of the adhesive for bonding different metal and rubber substrates is another part of the study. To study the ageing behaviour, different bonded specimens are exposed to high temperature, hot water and salt water and adhesive properties have been evaluated. The synthesized resins have been characterized by FTIR , HNMR spectroscopy. The molecular weights of the resins have been obtained by GPC. Thermogravimetric analysis and differential scanning calorimetry are used to study the thermal properties. The fractured surface analysis is studied by scanning electron microscopy. The study has brought to light the influence of phenol/ formaldehyde stoichiometric ratio, addition of cardanol (a renewable resource), adhesion promoters and suitability of the adhesive for different substrates and the age resistance of adhesive joints among other things. |

Abstract: | This research project aims at developing new applications for CNSL in the polymer field. Cashew nut shell liquid (CNSL) is a cheap agro-byproduct and renewable resource which consists mainly of substituted phenols. By using CNSL in place of phenol, phenol derived from petrochemicals can be conserved and a cheap agro-byproduct utilized. In this study CNSL based resin is prepared by condensing a mixture of phenol and CNSL with hexamethylenetetramine and the effect of P: F ratio and CNSL: P ratio on the properties of synthesized resin is studied. The adhesive properties of CNSL based resin in combination with neoprene rubber are investigated. The effect of varying the stoichiometric ratios between total phenol and formaldehyde and CNSL and phenol of the resin, resin content, choice and extent of fillers and adhesion promoters in the adhesive formulation are studied. The effect of resin on the ageing properties of various elastomers is also studied by following changes in tensile strength, elongation at break, modulus, tear strength, swelling index and acetone soluble matter. Crude CNSL and resins with different P: F ratios and CNSL: P ratios are incorporated into elastomers. Lastly, utility of CNSL based resin as binder for making particleboard is investigated. The results show that CNSL based resin is an effective ingredient in adhesives for bonding aluminium to aluminium. The resin used for adhesive fonnulation gives the best performance at 45 to 55 phr resin and a total phenol: formaldehyde of l:2.9. The resin when added at a rate of l5 phr improves ageing characteristics of elastomers with respect to mechanical properties. The reaction mixture of CNSL and hexa and the resin resulting from the condensation of CN SL, phenol and hexa can be used as effective binders for moulding particleboard. |

Abstract: | Biodegradable polymers have opened an emerging area of great interest because they are the ultimate solution for the disposal problems of synthetic polymers used for short time applications in the environmental and biomedical field. The biodegradable polymers available until recently have a number of limitations in terms of strength and dimensional stability. Most of them have processing problems and are also very expensive. Recent developments in biodegradable polymers show that monomers and polymers obtained from renewable resources are important owing to their inherent biodegradability, biocompatibility and easy availability. The present study is, therefore, mostly concemed with the utilization of renewable resources by effecting chemical modification/copolymerization on existing synthetic polymers/natural polymers for introducing better biodegradability and material properties. The thesis describes multiple approaches in the design of new biodegradable polymers: (1) Chemical modification of an existing nonbiodegradable polymer, polyethylene, by anchoring monosaccharides after functionalization to introduce biodegradability. (2) Copolymerization of an existing biodegradable polymer, polylactide, with suitable monomers and/or polymers to tailor their properties to suit the emerging requirements such as (2a) graft copolymerization of lactide onto chitosan to get controlled solvation and biodegradability and (2b) copolymerization of polylactide with cycloaliphatic amide segments to improve upon the thermal properties and processability. |
