| Abstract: | The present study was undertaken with a view to understanding some aspects of the morphology, bionomics and physiology of the sea anemone A.nigrescens. This species was selected for the study since it is abundantly available along the coast throughout the year and can successfully reared in the laboratory without much effort. The present study deals with the following aspects of A.nigrescens. description of the species, habitat, food and feeding, digestion, studies on salinity tolerance, studies on oxygen consumption, studies on tolerance to desiccation, asexual reproduction and regeneration. |

| Abstract: | Observing the wide possibilities of fluorescent dyes, an exhaustive investigation is done in laser dyes mainly focusing on Coumarin 540 which has a very strong emission in the green region. The photophysics of the dye is studied in detail in a good number of solvent environments. The results of the amplified spontaneous emission and lasing behaviour in both dye solution and different polymer solid state matrices and the ptotostability of the these matrices are investigated using the photoacoustic technique and the same are also included in this thesis. The energy transfer behaviour in dye mixtures which could be utilized for laser studies and bio-analysis are also presented. The nonlinear characterization of Coumarin540 forms the last part of the experimental investigations presented in the thesis. |

| Abstract: | This thesis summarizes the results on the studies on a syntax based approach for translation between Malayalam, one of Dravidian languages and English and also on the development of the major modules in building a prototype machine translation system from Malayalam to English. The development of the system is a pioneering effort in Malayalam language unattempted by previous researchers. The computational models chosen for the system is first of its kind for Malayalam language. An in depth study has been carried out in the design of the computational models and data structures needed for different modules: morphological analyzer , a parser, a syntactic structure transfer module and target language sentence generator required for the prototype system. The generation of list of part of speech tags, chunk tags and the hierarchical dependencies among the chunks required for the translation process also has been done. In the development process, the major goals are: (a) accuracy of translation (b) speed and (c) space. Accuracy-wise, smart tools for handling transfer grammar and translation standards including equivalent words, expressions, phrases and styles in the target language are to be developed. The grammar should be optimized with a view to obtaining a single correct parse and hence a single translated output. Speed-wise, innovative use of corpus analysis, efficient parsing algorithm, design of efficient Data Structure and run-time frequency-based rearrangement of the grammar which substantially reduces the parsing and generation time are required. Technology which is close to nature is the necessity of the modern world which is haunted by global warming and climatic alterations. Proper utilization of solar energy is one of the goals of Green Energy Movement. The present thesis deals with the work carried out in the eld of nanotechnology and its possible use in various applications (employing natural dyes) like solar cells. Unlike arti cial dyes, the natural dyes are available, easy to prepare, low in cost, non-toxic, environmentally friendly and fully biodegradable. Looking to the 21st century, the nano/micro sciences will be a chief contributor to scienti c and technological developments. As nanotechnology progresses and complex nanosystems are fabricated, a growing impetus is being given to the development of multi-functional and size-dependent materials. The control of the morphology, from the nano to the micrometer scales, associated with the incorporation of several functionalities can yield entirely new smart hybrid materials. They are special class of materials which provide a new method for the improvement of the environmental stability of the material with interesting optical properties and opening a land of opportunities for applications in the eld of photonics. Zinc oxide (ZnO) is one such multipurpose material that has been explored for applications in sensing, environmental monitoring, and bio-medical systems and communications technology. Understanding the growth mechanism and tailoring their morphology is essential for the use of ZnO crystals as nano/micro electromechanical systems and also as building blocks of other nanosystems. |

It is presented under the following major headings: Introduction, Review of Literature, Materials and Methods, Results, Discussions, Conclusions, Recommendations, Summary and References.The introduction gives a brief account of historical and modern back ground on the stock concept in fisheries research and management, followed by the importance and potential role of biochemical genetics in the identification of natural units of fisheries management. In the review of literature published reports relevant to biochemical genetics with special reference to that of general proteins and enzyme systems of fish populations were considered. A detailed account of the source of experimental specimens, mode of collection, transportation, sample extraction, gel preparation/gel electrophoresis, buffer systems, staining procedures of proteins/enzymes, standardization of experiments, interpretation of electrophoretic data using basic formulae etc. are given in the materials and methods section. Four important conclusions were drawn on the basis of the results of the present investigation. Three recommendations were also made on the basis of evaluation of the results. |

| Abstract: | In situ methods used for water quality assessment have both physical and time constraints. Just a limited number of sampling points can be performed due to this, making it difficult to capture the range and variability of coastal processes and constituents. In addition, the mixing between fresh and oceanic water creates complex physical, chemical and biological environment that are difficult to understand, causing the existing measurement methodologies to have significant logistical, technical, and economic challenges and constraints. Remote sensing of ocean colour makes it possible to acquire information on the distribution of chlorophyll and other constituents over large areas of the oceans in short periods. There are many potential applications of ocean colour data. Satellite-derived products are a key data source to study the distribution pattern of organisms and nutrients (Guillaud et al. 2008) and fishery research (Pillai and Nair 2010; Solanki et al. 2001. Also, the study of spatial and temporal variability of phytoplankton blooms, red tide identification or harmful algal blooms monitoring (Sarangi et al. 2001; Sarangi et al. 2004; Sarangi et al. 2005; Bhagirathan et al., 2014), river plume or upwelling assessments (Doxaran et al. 2002; Sravanthi et al. 2013), global productivity analyses (Platt et al. 1988; Sathyendranath et al. 1995; IOCCG2006) and oil spill detection (Maianti et al. 2014). For remote sensing to be accurate in the complex coastal waters, it has to be validated with the in situ measured values. In this thesis an attempt to study, measure and validate the complex waters with the help of satellite data has been done. Monitoring of coastal ecosystem health of Arabian Sea in a synoptic way requires an intense, extensive and continuous monitoring of the water quality indicators. Phytoplankton determined from chl-a concentration, is considered as an indicator of the state of the coastal ecosystems. Currently, satellite sensors provide the most effective means for frequent, synoptic, water-quality observations over large areas and represent a potential tool to effectively assess chl-a concentration over coastal and oceanic waters; however, algorithms designed to estimate chl-a at global scales have been shown to be less accurate in Case 2 waters, due to the presence of water constituents other than phytoplankton which do not co-vary with the phytoplankton. The constituents of Arabian Sea coastal waters are region-specific because of the inherent variability of these optically-active substances affected by factors such as riverine input (e.g. suspended matter type and grain size, CDOM) and phytoplankton composition associated with seasonal changes. |

| Abstract: | Semiconductor photocatalysis has received much attention during last three decades as a promising solution for both energy generation and environmental problems. Heterogeneous photocatalytic oxidation allows the degradation of organic compounds into carbon dioxide and water in the presence of a semiconductor catalyst and UV light source. The •OH radicals formed during the photocatalytic processes are powerful oxidizing agents and can mineralise a number of organic contaminants. Titanium dioxide (TiO2), due to its chemical stability, non-toxicity and low cost represents one of the most efficient photocatalyst. However, only the ultraviolet fraction of the solar radiation is active in the photoexcitation processes using pure TiO2 and although, TiO2 can treat a wide range of organic pollutants the effectiveness of the process for pollution abatement is still low. A more effective and efficient catalyst therefore must be formulated. Doping of TiO2 was considered with the aim of improving photocatalytic properties. In this study TiO2 catalyst was prepared using the sol-gel method. Metal and nonmetal doped TiO2 catalysts were prepared. The photoactivity of the catalyst was evaluated by the photodegradation of different dyes and pesticides in aqueous solution. High photocatalytic degradation of all the pollutants was observed with doped TiO2. Structural and optical properties of the catalysts were characterized using XRD, BET surface area, UV-Vis. DRS, CHNS analysis, SEM, EDX, TEM, XPS, FTIR and TG. All the catalysts showed the anatase phase. The presence of dopants shifts the absorption of TiO2 into the visible region indicating the possibility of using visible light for photocatalytic processes. |

| Abstract: | Scientists throughout the world are in search of a better methodology to reduce the use of environmentally hazardous chemicals common in industries .A significant contribution in this field is given by different redox catalysts in oxidation reactions. The oxidation of organic substrates represents one of the most important industrial chemical reactions, explaining the significant efforts invested in the research and development of new heterogeneous catalysts with increased activities and selectivities in these type reactions[l-4|. Hence liquid phase reactions like epoxidation of cylcohexene and hydroxylation of phenol were carried out with a new outlook in the challenge using CeO2/TiO;; and CuO/TiO2 catalysts denoted as TiO2-Ce as TiO2-Cu respectively in this work. Also different wt% of metals incorporated titania catalysts like 3, 6, 9 wt% CeO2/TiO; and CuO/TiO;were subjected to the present study .The interaction between metal oxides and the oxide supports have attracted much attention because of the wide applications of supported metal oxide systems[7,8]. It is well known that supported oxides of transition metals are widely used as catalysts for various reactions. Titania as well its metal modified catalysts systems afford high activity and selectivity in the liquid phase epoxidation of cyclohexene[9]. Cyclohexene epoxide is obtained as the major product during the reaction with small amounts of allylic substitution products.This chapter gives an idea about the liquid phase oxidation reactions like epoxidation of cylcohexene and hydroxylation of phenol in which many industrially important products are formed. Here discusses about the redox properties of the ceria and copper incorporated titania catalysts.The epoxidation of cyclohcxene is carried out efficiently over the prepared systems with the selective formation of cyclohexane epoxide. This reaction hints that it might be possible to create cleaner nylon chemistry. The total acidity of the prepared systems plays an important role in determining the catalytic activity in the dehydrogenation of cyclohexane and cyclohexene. | Abstract: | The present project was a systematic investigation of the physico-chemical properties and catalytic activity of some transition metal promoted sulphated zirconia systems. The characterisation and catalytic activity results were compared with that of pure Zr02 and simple sulphated zirconia systems. Sulphated zirconia samples were prepared by a controlled impregnation technique. In the case of metal incorporated systems, a single step impregnation was carried out using required amounts of sulphuric acid and metal salt solutions. As a preliminary step, optimisation of calcination temperature and sulphate content was achieved. For further studies, the optimised sulphate loading of 10 ml per gram of hydrous zirconium oxide and a calcination temperature of 700°C was employed. Metal incorporation had a positive influence on the physico-chemical properties. Vapour phase cumene conversion served as a test reaction for acidity. Some industrially important reactions like Friedel-Crafts reaction, phenol hydroxylation, nitration, etc. were selected to test the catalytic activity of the prepared systems. |

Vanadia is a transition metal oxide and is used in oxidation reactions in chemical industry. It is more active and selective catalysts on suitable supports. The work deals with preparation of vanadia incorporated tin oxide and zirconia systems by wet impregnation. Physico-chemical characterization using instrumental techniques like BET etc. The surface acidic properties were determined by the ammonia TPD studies, Perylene absorption studies and Cumene conversion reaction. The catalytic activities of the prepared systems are tested by Friedel-Crafts benzylation of arenes and Bechmann rearrangement of Cyclohexanol oxime. Here the rector reactions are relatively rare. So to test the application of the catalyst systems for the selective oxidation of cyclohexanol to cyclohexanone and finally evaluate the catalytic activity of the systems for the vapour phase oxidative dehydrogenation of Ethylbenzene, which leads to the formation of Industrially important compound ‘styrene’ is another objective of this work |
