Abstract:
The thesis is a study undertaken to understand the distribution pattern of Q nega in Cochin
waters for better exploitation of the resource and to learn the biological aspects of the animal which has a direct bearing on its utilization for producing different products .The study also presents a thorough knowledge on the size groups available during different seasons for judicious exploitation and utilization of the resource and the changes in the biochemical composition of Q nega during different seasons so as to utilize it properly for producing suitable products throughout the year. The thesis also tests the suitability of the material for producing different products and to test the acceptability of the same for human consumption. The study also aims to show that Squilla can be utilized for the production of industrial products like chitin and chitosan.

Abstract:
Based on the adaption of fishes to their habitat, they are divided
into three ecological groups - marine, fresh water and estuarine or brackish
water forms. Estuarine fishes inhabit the less saline region of the sea,
estuaries and other inland waters. These fishes are more subjected to pollution
than fresh water fishes or marine fishes as they encounter pollutants present
in the outgoing river water and the incoming sea water during low and high
tides respectively. So, the study of the biology of the estuarine fishes has
become unavoidable to assess their suitability in aquaculture.
The development of both capture and culture fisheries related to any
brackish water system is dependent on the availability of scientific‘ data on the
various biological factors in respect of the different species. Such a study on
fishes will be helpful in formulating suitable schemes for the management of
brackish water for capture and culture fisheries. It was therefore felt that
a study of the biological and biochemical aspects of two estuarine fishes Megalops cyprinoides Broussonet and Scatophargus Bloch which are not
fully exploited in aquaculture programmes, was worth undertaking. The present
study is expected to advance our knowledge on the biology of the two fishes
which are very desirable for brackish water fish farming

Abstract:
In the present study two aspects of cephalopod fishery such as (i)
landings and (ii) utilization including export of cephalopods from Indian are
dealt with. Under the topic landings, craft, both traditional and mechanized
and fishing techniques employed for capturing cephalopods are discussed.
General trend in cephalopod landing in India and particularly south west coast,
species composition, description and geographic distribution of important
species of cuttle fishes, squids and octopus and the distribution and abundance
of cephalopods along the continental shelf of the south west coast are also
discussed. Some biological aspects like population parameters, maturation and
spawning, food and feeding of the two representive species of cuttle fishes and
squid viz, Sepia pharaonis and Loligo duvauceli are studied.Under utilization, general handling and processing of various frozen
cephalopods products for exports and commercial operation in a typical plant
are studied. The export of cephalopod products since its commencement is
studied in detail and market strategy for enhancing the export are suggested.

Abstract:
This thesis deals with the study of light beam propagation through different
nonlinear media. Analytical and numerical methods are used to
show the formation of solitonS in these media. Basic experiments have
also been performed to show the formation of a self-written waveguide in a
photopolymer. The variational method is used for the analytical analysis
throughout the thesis. Numerical method based on the finite-difference forms of the original partial differential equation is used for the numerical
analysis.In Chapter 2, we have studied two kinds of solitons, the (2 + 1) D
spatial solitons and the (3 + l)D spatio-temporal solitons in a cubic-quintic
medium in the presence of multiphoton ionization.In Chapter 3, we have studied the evolution of light beam through a
different kind of nonlinear media, the photorcfractive polymer. We study
modulational instability and beam propagation through a photorefractive
polymer in the presence of absorption losses. The one dimensional beam
propagation through the nonlinear medium is studied using variational and
numerical methods. Stable soliton propagation is observed both analytically
and numerically.Chapter 4 deals with the study of modulational instability in a photorefractive
crystal in the presence of wave mixing effects. Modulational
instability in a photorefractive medium is studied in the presence of two
wave mixing. We then propose and derive a model for forward four wave
mixing in the photorefractive medium and investigate the modulational
instability induced by four wave mixing effects. By using the standard
linear stability analysis the instability gain is obtained.Chapter 5 deals with the study of self-written waveguides. Besides
the usual analytical analysis, basic experiments were done showing the
formation of self-written waveguide in a photopolymer system.
The formation of a directional coupler in a photopolymer system is
studied theoretically in Chapter 6. We propose and study, using the
variational approximation as well as numerical simulation, the evolution
of a probe beam through a directional coupler formed in a photopolymer system.

Abstract:
The situation in the backwaters of Kerala, which
reportedly had about 70,000 ha of mangroves, is unique in the sense that
there has been a total conversion to other uses such as paddy cultivation,
coconut plantation, aquaculture, harbour development and urban development
In order to save and restore what is left over national and international
organisations are mounting pressure on scientists and policy makers
to work out ways and means conserving and managing the mangrove
ecosystems.
In this context, it has been observed in recent years that mangrove
vegetation has remained intact in isolated pockets of undisturbed areas
in the Cochin estuarine system and also that there is resurgence of
mangroves in areas of accretion and silting. The candidate took up the
present study with a view to make an inventory of the existing mangrove
locations, the areas of resurgence, species composition, zonation and other
ecological parameters to understand their dynamism and to suggest a
mangement plan for this important coastal ecosystem

This thesis deals with some aspects of the Physics of the early universe, like phase transitions, bubble nucleations and premodial density perturbations which lead to the formation structures in the universe. Quantum aspects of the gravitational interaction play an essential role in retical high-energy physics. The questions of the quantum gravity are naturally connected with early universe and Grand Unification Theories. In spite of numerous efforts, the various problems of quantum gravity remain still unsolved. In this condition, the consideration of different quantum gravity models is an inevitable stage to study the quantum aspects of gravitational interaction. The important role of gravitationally coupled scalar field in the physics of the early universe is discussed in this thesis. The study shows that the scalar-gravitational coupling and the scalar curvature did play a crucial role in determining the nature of phase transitions that took place in the early universe. The key idea in studying the formation structure in the universe is that of gravitational instability.
Aquaculture is the dynamic pursuit of production of organisms
from water a process analogous to agriculture on land. The field of
aquaculture is an emerging bioindustry, based upon the culture and husbandry
of economically utilizable aquatic organisms. Of late, there has been a
global upsurge for aquaculture, the main reasons for which include the
requirement of protein source for the increasing world population, the decision
by various world nations to increase the fish yield by developing unutilized
or partially utilized water bodies and depletion of natural stock which is
evident in recent years due to excessive exploitation .The present study has been taken up on the reproductive physiology of the female grey mullet, M. cephalus. The thesis is presented in seven chapters. In the present study, variations in the
major biochemical parameters namely, moisture, proteins, lipids, carbohydrates
cholesterol, carotenoid, ash, calcium and iron in four tissues E. muscle,
liver, ovary and bloodserum of cephalus have been analysed at different maturity stages.

Abstract:
The present work comprises studies on the salinity tolerance
and respiratory metabolism of a mood-boring sphaeromid, Sphaeroma
annandalei, Stabbing and two free living,foulers of the family
Cirolanidae, Cirolana fluviatilis Stabbing and C. uilleyi Stabbing.
Except for the systematic accounts and general observations by
Pillai (1961) and the preliminary studies on the salinity tolerance
and respiration of C. fluviatilis by Nagabhushanam and Gopalakrishnamurthy
(1965, 1965a) very little is known about these isopods From
Indian waters. Studies by John (1968) on the habits, structure,
and development of Sphaeroma terebrans and by Cheriyan (1973) on the
eoéphysiology of the same are the recent major contributions on this
interesting group of animals. 5. annandalei is closely related to
S. terebrans and has been reported to occur on timber along with the
latter (Pillai, 1951). s. gggandalei is a serious pest attacking wood
along the Kerala coast, but detailed works on this species have not

Though several scientific expeditions surveyed
tha Indian ocean. their findings on larval fishes
were fragmentory and incomplete. During the
International Indian ocean expedition (1960-1965)
zooplankton samples were collected from vast area at
the lndian ocean adopting standard procedures by
participating vessels. These planktons provided an opportunity for a general study of the
zooplanltton as well as their anotomy. abundance and
distribution.. Realising the imortance of the
analysis and classification of fish larvae at the
family level being one of the most important
information required then for the Indian Ocean region

zooplankton samples was allocated to the author by the
UNESCO consultative committee for the Indian Ocean
