| Abstract: | Present work deals with the studies on energy requirement and convervation in selected fish harvesting systems.Modem fishing is one of the most energy intensive methods of food production. Fossil fuels used for motorised and mechanised fishing are nonrenewable and limited. Most of the environmental problems that confront mankind today are connected to the use of energy in one way or another. Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries (FAO, 1995) highlights the need for efficient use of energy in the fisheries sector. Information on energy requirement in different fish harvesting systems, based on the principles of energy analysis, is entirely lacking in respect of Indian fisheries. Such an analysis will provide an unbiased decision making support for maximising the yield per unit of non-renewable energy use, from different fishery resource systems, by rational deployment of harvesting systems. In the present study, results of investigations conducted during 1997-2000 on energy requirement in selected fish harvesting systems and approaches to energy conservation in fishing, are presented along with a detailed description of the fish harvesting systems and their operation. The content of the thesis is organised into 8 Chapters. |

| Abstract: | This thesis is an outcome of the studies, carried out by the author on the Equatorial Undercurrent and the Equatorial Jet, an interesting and unique phenomenon discovered, recently, in the Indian Ocean (wyrtxi, 1973). The main objective of the thesis is to carry out a detailed investigation of the seasonal, latitudinal and longitudinal variation of the Equatorial Undercurrent in the Indian Ocean and also the Equatorial Jet, through mapping the vertical distribution of the oceanographic properties across the equator along various longitudes for all the months of an year, between SON and SOS, utilising the oceanographic data collected during the International Indian Ocean Expedition and subsequently in the equatorial Indian Ocean. As the distribution of the hydrographic properties give only a qualitative identification of the Undercurrent, a novel technique of computing the zonal flux through bivariate distribution of salinity and thermosteric anomaly introduced by Montgomery and Stroup (1962), is adopted in order to have a quantitative variation of the Equatorial Undercurrent and the Equatorial Jet. Finally, an attempt is made to give a plausible explanation of the features observed. |

| Abstract: | The thesis mainly discussed the isolation and identification of a probiotic Lactobacillus plantarum, fermentative production of exopolysaccharide by the strain, its purification, structural characterisation and possible applications in food industry and therapeutics. The studies on the probiotic characterization explored the tolerance of the isolated LAB cultures to acid, bile, phenol, salt and mucin binding. These are some of the key factors that could satisfy the criteria for probiotic strains . The important factors required for a high EPS production in submerged fermentation was investigated with a collection of statistical and mathematical approach. Chapter 5 of the thesis explains the structural elucidation of EPS employing spectroscopic and chromatographic techniques. The studies helped in the exploration of the hetero-polysaccharide sequence from L. plantarum MTCC 9510. The thesis also explored the bioactivities of EPS from L. plantarum. As majority of chemical compounds identified as anti-cancerous are toxic to normal cells, the discovery and identification of new safe drugs has become an important goal of research in the biomedical sciences. The thesis has explored the anti-oxidant, anti-tumour and immunomodulating properties of EPS purified from Lactobacillus plantarum. The presence of (1, 3) linkages and its molecular weight presented the EPS with anti-oxidant, anti-tumour and immunomodulating properties under in vitro conditions. |

| Abstract: | Commercially, Pleurotus spp. of mushroom are cultivated in bags. After mushroom cultivation, spent substrate remains as residual material. Proper recycling of spent substrate is beneficial for our economy. Spent substrate can be utilized for various other value added purposes through the proper knowledge of its components. Composition of various components depends on the activity of extracellular enzymes in the spent substrate. The present study was conducted to know the enzyme profile of some major extracellular enzymes - cellulase, hemicellulase (xylanase), pectinase and ligninase (lignin peroxidase and laccase) and to estimate cellulose, hemicellulose, pectin and lignin in the substrate. The use of spent substrate as a source of fibre and ethanol, and in the biodegradation of phenol by Pleurotus spp. was also investigated |

| Abstract: | Lipids constitute a significant portion of the biomass of earth and lipolytic enzymes play a very important role in lipid turn over. Apart from their biological significance, lipolytic enzymes are also very important in the fields of nutrition, food technology, medicine and preparative and analytical lipid biochemistry. Recent developments in the study of proteins and enzymes have largely benefited the study of lipolytic enzymes, that some of these enzymes were isolated in pure form. Even today there is a continuous search for new and potent sources of these lipolytic enzymes. The zest for elucidating the structure and mechanism of action of the enzymes obtained in pure form for biochemist still remains unabated. The literature shows no record of such an effort for the study of lipases from marine sources. The fact that many fishes like oil sardine, mackerel, cat fish, seer etc. contains large amounts of lipid shows the possibility of the existence of lipases in significant amounts necessitating their exhaustive study. Such a study will, not only provide alternate sources for lipase but also will provide methods to curb lipolysis and the resultant rancidity and off flavor development in fish and fishery products. |

| Abstract: | The thesis deals with detailed theoretical analysis of fluxon dynamics in single and in coupled Josephson junctions of different geometries under various internal and external conditions. The main objective of the present work is to investigate the properties of narrow Long Josephson junctions (LJJs) and to discuss the intriguing physics. In this thesis, Josephson junctions of three types of geometries, viz, rectangular, semiannular and quarter annular geometries in single and coupled format are studied to implement various fluxon based devices. Studies presented in this thesis reveal that mulistacked junctions are extremely useful in the fabrication of various super conducting electronic devices. The stability of the dynamical mode and therefore the operational stability of the proposed devices depend on parameters such as coupling strength, external magnetic fields, damping parameters etc. Stacked junctions offer a promising way to construct high-TC superconducting electronic components. Exploring the complex dynamics of fluxons in coupled junctions is a challenging and important task for the future experimental and theoretical investigations |

| Abstract: | Food and feeding habits of fourteen demersal finfishes exploited off the Karnataka coast were studied to investigate trophic interactions within the marine food web. Index of Relative Importance (lRI),Ontogenetic, seasonal (pre-monsoon, monsoon and post-monsoon) variation in feeding and prey-predator relationship studies were conducted.The results of prey-predator trophic interaction studies identified four major trophic guilds based on the predators feeding similarity.Trophic guild I is 'copepod and detritus fceders'with an average group similarity of 61.4%. The second trophic guild, 'prawn and crab feeders'with an average similarity of 52.7%. 'Acetes feeders', the largest trophic guild with an average group similarity of 62.5%, composed of six demersal finfish species.The guild 'piscivores' is constituted by C. limba/us and P. arsius with an average similarity of 45%.For each predator, ontogenetic diet shift is common and is characterized by prey of low to high trophic level.Strong selection of certain prey types was observed in some predators while most of them avoided abundant prey.In addition to Acetes spp, strong predation impact was observed for penaeid prawns, epibenthic crabs and detritus.This information on trophic guilds and prey-predator interactions can be used to construct trophic model on the benthic ecosystem off Karnataka and to investigate fishery induced changes as well as predation impact of different animals on commercially important demersals |

| Abstract: | FPS is a more general form of synchronization. Hyperchaotic systems possessing more than one positive Lypaunov exponent exhibit highly complex behaviour and are more suitable for some applications like secure communications. In this thesis we report studies of FPS and MFPS of a few chaotic and hyperchaotic systems. When all the parameters of the system are known we show that active nonlinear control method can be efectively used to obtain FPS. Adaptive nonlinear control and OPCL control method are employed for obtaining FPS and MFPS when some or all parameters of the system are uncertain. A secure communication scheme based on MFPS is also proposed in theory. All our theoretical calculations are verified by numerical simulations. |

| Abstract: | Man's concern with environmental deterioration is one of the major reasons for the increased interest in marine and estuarine microbes. Microbes form an important link in the biogeochemical cycling and their cyclinq activites often determine to a large measure the potential productivity of an ecosystem In the recycling of the nutrients in the estuary, bacteria and fungi therefore play a particularly significant role.The allochthonous plant materials contain biopolymers such as cellulose, lignin, humus etc., that are difficult to degrade into simpler substances. The fungi have the ability to degrade _substances, thereby making them available for cycling within the system. The present study is devoted to find the composition and the activity of myco populations of Cochin backwater. For convenience the thesis is divided into eight chapters. The opening chapter briefly reviews the literature and projects the importance of work and the main objectives. Second chapter discusses the materials and methods. In the third chapter the systematic and taxonomy of estuarine yeasts are examined in detail since this information is scarcely available for our waters. The general ecological aspects of the yeasts and filamentous fungi in the area of study are examined in the fourth chapter using appropriate statistical techniques. A special reference to the fungi in a small mangrove ecosystem is attempted in the fifth chapter. The biochemical studies are discussed in the sixth chapter and the penultimate chapter provides an overall discussion. In the last chapter the summary of the work is presented. |

| Abstract: | In this thesis an attempt to develop the properties of basic concepts in fuzzy graphs such as fuzzy bridges, fuzzy cutnodes, fuzzy trees and blocks in fuzzy graphs have been made. The notion of complement of a fuzzy graph is modified and some of its properties are studied. Since the notion of complement has just been initiated, several properties of G and G available for crisp graphs can be studied for fuzzy graphs also. Mainly focused on fuzzy trees defined by Rosenfeld in [10] , several other types of fuzzy trees are defined depending on the acyclicity level of a fuzzy graph. It is observed that there are selfcentered fuzzy trees. Some operations on fuzzy graphs and prove that complement of the union two fuzzy graphs is the join of their complements and complement of the join of two fuzzy graphs is union of their complements. The study of fuzzy graphs made in this thesis is far from being complete. The wide ranging applications of graph theory and the interdisciplinary nature of fuzzy set theory, if properly blended together could pave a way for a substantial growth of fuzzy graph theory. |

| Abstract: | The doctoral thesis focuses on the Studies on fuzzy Matroids and related topics.Since the publication of the classical paper on fuzzy sets by L. A. Zadeh in 1965.the theory of fuzzy mathematics has gained more and more recognition from many researchers in a wide range of scientific fields. Among various branches of pure and applied mathematics, convexity was one of the areas where the notion of fuzzy set was applied. Many researchers have been involved in extending the notion of abstract convexity to the broader framework of fuzzy setting. As a result, a number of concepts have been formulated and explored. However. many concepts are yet to be fuzzified. The main objective of this thesis was to extend some basic concepts and results in convexity theory to the fuzzy setting. The concept like matroids, independent structures. classical convex invariants like Helly number, Caratheodoty number, Radon number and Exchange number form an important area of study in crisp convexity theory. In this thesis, we try to generalize some of these concepts to the fuzzy setting. Finally, we have defined different types of fuzzy matroids derived from vector spaces and discussed some of their properties. |

| Abstract: | In classical field theory, the ordinary potential V is an energy density for that state in which the field assumes the value ¢. In quantum field theory, the effective potential is the expectation value of the energy density for which the expectation value of the field is ¢o. As a result, if V has several local minima, it is only the absolute minimum that corresponds to the true ground state of the theory. Perturbation theory remains to this day the main analytical tool in the study of Quantum Field Theory. However, since perturbation theory is unable to uncover the whole rich structure of Quantum Field Theory, it is desirable to have some method which, on one hand, must go beyond both perturbation theory and classical approximation in the points where these fail, and at that time, be sufficiently simple that analytical calculations could be performed in its framework During the last decade a nonperturbative variational method called Gaussian effective potential, has been discussed widely together with several applications. This concept was described as a means of formalizing our intuitive understanding of zero-point fluctuation effects in quantum mechanics in a way that carries over directly to field theory. |
