Abstract:
In the thesis entitled " Novel Strategies for Heterocyclic Constructions via 1 ,4-Dipolar Intermediates"Synthesis of a complex organic molecules essentially involves the formation of carbon-carbon and carbon-heteroatom bonds. Various synthetic methods are available for these processes involving ionic, pericyclic and
radical reactions. Among the pericyclic reactions, dipolar cycloaddition reactions, introduced by Huisgen, have emerged as a very powerful tool for heterocyclic construction. Heterocyclic compounds remain an important class of organic molecules due to their natural abundance and remarkable biological activity, thus constituting an intergral part of pharmaceutical industry. In this respect, developing newer synthetic methodology for heterocyclic construction has been an area of immense interest. In recent years, 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition reactions proved to be efficient routes to a wide variety of five membered heterocycles, as attested by their application in the total synthesis of various complex organic molecules. However, the potential application of similar 1,4- dipolar cycloaddition reactions for the construction of six memebered heterocycles remained underexploited. In this context, a systematic investigation of the reactivity of 1,4-dipoles generated from nitrogen heterocycles (pyridine and its analogues) and dimethyl acetylenedicarboxy!ate (DMAD) towards various dipolarophiles has been carried out and the results are embodied.

Abstract:
In recent years considerable advances have been achieved in the study of the surface structure and mechanism of action of environmentally benign heterogeneous catalysts. The study entitled as surface properties and catalytic activity of manganese ferrospinels. In the present study we have prepared manganese ferrospinels of general formula Mn(1-x)BxFe2O4 via low temperature controlled co-precipation method. The study employed low temperature co-precipitation method for the preparation ofMn(1-x)BxFe2O4 specimens, where B is a metal cation such as Cr,Co, Ni,Cu and Zn. The catalytic activities of the systems were investigated for liquid-phase benzoylation of aromatic compounds and phenol hydroxylation and for vapour-phase reactions such as aniline alkylation, phenol methylation and ODH of ethylbenzene. The different series of manganese ferrites are proved to be excellent catalysts for various industrially important reactions such as Friedel-crafts benzoylation of aromatic compounds, methylation of aniline and phenol, hydroxylation of phenol and oxidative dehydrogenation of ethylbenzene. Due to the tightening of the environmental regulations, production of diphenols from phenol hydroxylation and reduction of phenolic pollutants in waste waters using these catalysts can be a promising approach because it demands only simple techniques and produce little environmental pollution.

Abstract:
A novel dual frequency design of a square microstrip antenna coaxially
fed along the diagonal with a chip capacitor mounted at the bottom of
the stub is introduced. This design provides enhanced area reduction and
good cross-polarization levels. The antenna design can be used as a compact
antenna system where limited size is a major requirement. The details of the
antenna design and experimental results are presented

Abstract:
A novel technique fitr the bat dividth enhancement of conventional
rectangular microstrip antenna is proposed in this paper. When a
high permittivity dielectric resonator of suitable resonant frequency was
loaded over the patch. the % bandwidth of the antenna was increased by
more than five tunes without much affecting its gain and radiation performance.
A much more improved bandwidth was obtained when the dielectric
resonator was placed on the feedline. Experimental study shows a 2:1
VSWR bandwidth of more than 10% and excellent cross polarization performance
with increased pass band and radiation coverage abnost the same
as that of rectangular microstrip antenna
Fully burnt rice hull (rice hull ash) was tried as a low cost filler in place of precipitated
silica in NBR/PVC based microcellular soles. The mechanical properties of the soles
containing silica and ash are found to be comparable. The expansion is marginally
higher in the presence of ash, which permits to reduce the amount of blowing agent. Cell
structure of microcellular sheets remains unchanged when silica is replaced by ash.

Abstract:
The thesis deals with the synthesis, characterization and catalytic activity studies of some new Fe (III), Co (II), Ni (II) and Cu (II) complexes of hydrazones and their zeolite encapsulated analogues. Hydrazones have diverse applications in biological, non-biological and biochemical front. During the present study three hydrazone types of ligands namely, acetylacetone- 2-hydroxyphenylhydrazone (APAcAc), acetoacetanilide- 2-hydroxyphenylhydrazone (APAcAcA) and acetoacetanilide-3,5-dihydro-2,4-dione pyrimidylhydrazone (AUAcAcA) were synthesized by diazotization of primary amine and coupling with compounds containing active methylene group. First part of the thesis deals with the synthesis of Fe, Co, Ni and Cu complexes using three hydrazone types of ligands are given. Details regarding the characterization of these complexes with a view to establishing the molecular structures are presented in this part. The other part contains the method of encapsulation of these complexes in zeolite cavities and their characterizations of the encapsulated metal species are described. A comparitive account of the catalytic activities of the pure and encapsulated complexes for cyclohexanol oxidation was also carried out.
Latex waste products contain rubber hydrocarbon of very high
quality, which is only lightly cross linked. Selected wastes such as thread waste
and glove waste were modified into processable materials by a novel economic
process and thermoplastic elastomers were prepared by blending these modified
waste materials with high density polyethylene in various proportions. The
mechanical properties as well as the rheological behaviour of these blends were
evaluated and compared with those of the natural rubber-high density
polyethylene blends.

Abstract:
The present study focuses on the biochemical aspects of six islands belonging to Lakshadweep Archipelago – namely Kavaratti, Kadamath, Kiltan, Androth, Agathy and Minicoy. Lakshadweep, which is an area biologically significant due to isolation from the major coastline, remains as one of the least studied areas in Indian Ocean. The work, processed out the distributional pattern of trace metals among the biotic (corols, sea weeds and sea grass) and abiotic component (sediments) of ecosystem. An effort is made to picturise the spatial distribution pattern of different forms of nitrogen and phosphorus in the various sedimentary environments of the study area. Studies on the biogeochemical and nutrient aspects of the concerned study area scanty. In Lakshadweep, the local life is very dependent on reefs and its resources. The important stress which produce a threatening effort on the existence for coral reefs are anthropogenic-namely-organic and inorganic pollution from sewage, agricultural and industrial waters, sediment damage from excessive land cleaning, and over exploitation particularly through destructive fishing methods. In addition these one other more localized or less service anthropogenic stress: pollution by oil and other hydrocarbons, complex organic molecular and heavy metal pollution, and destructive engineering practices.
