Abstract: | The growing demand for quality prawn seed from the farmers‘ and entrepreneurs, coupled with uncertainity of their availability from nature at the appropriate time in required quantities has prompted‘ research on problems connected with prawn seed production. Endocrine control of reproduction in the penaeid shrimp _P_. monodon has been investigated in detail by adopting a comprehensive approach to the problem. The major aspects of the study included in depth investigations of the cytological details of the reproductive and neuroendocrine organs in correlation with the process of gonadal maturation. Based on the conclusions drawn from such ultrastructural studies various endocrine manipulations were carried out to see their effects on gonadal maturation. Besides that studies on the reproductive quality of male P_. monodon and the cryopreservation of spermatophores form a part of the present investigation. The shrimp 3; Inonodon used in the present study were collected from the offshore waters of Cochin, Madras and Mandapam and from the culture ponds of Vypeen Island near Cochin (Kerala) . The entire investigation on the cytological aspects were carried out using standard histological and electron-microscopic methods. Endocrine manipulations and cryopreservation studies is also carried out using the standard methods. |

Abstract: | In the present study, the main emphasis was to find out it seasonal and ecosystem specific variations of calcium magnesium, phosphorus, copper and zinc in the water and the sediment has any role to play in altering the concentration of these elements in different tissues of intermoult p.indicus as evidenced by the seasonal studies in the grow out and the marine ecosystems |

Abstract: | ’l‘he reproductive physiology of the female palaemonid prawn M. idella has been investigated by adopting a comprehensive approach to the problem. The major aspects of the study included investigations on breeding biology and process of oogenesis, variations in the biochemical components in relation to maturation, neuroendocrine relations and control over reproduction, and artificial insemination. The prawns used in the present study were procured from Vembanad Lake at Panavally village - a place nearly 20 km. away from Cochin. The studies were carried out using standard histological and biochemical methods. The modern technique of electroejaculation was adopted for extrusion of spermatophores in artificial insemination experiment. |

Abstract: | Penaeid prawns form the most economically significant group in the marine and brackishwater fishery resources of India. This particular group contributes about 62% of the total prawn landings of the country. At present prawns have assumed an important place especially as a commodity supporting an export trade of sizable magnitude. Considerable interest has been shown in the last decade to increase prawn production through various culture practices, mainly due to the high demand for good quality prawns for export coupled with the stagnant and even depleting nature of marine catches. Available informations suggest that among the 15 species of shrimps and prawns occurring in Indian waters, which are deemed suitable for aquaculture, the Indian white prawn §.indicus is identified as one of the most important commercial species. Considering the increasing importance as an accepted species for prawn culture, £.indicus was selected for the present study. In the life history of prawns, moulting is an important event, which enables the animal to achieve growth. This dynamic physiological event continues through out the life span ofthe prawn, linking almost all biological activities with this process. Hence, a good knowledge pertaining to the physiology of moulting is imperative to understand the growth process. This knowledge will be of great use in the scientific prawn farming, so as to achieve high prawn production. |

Abstract: | The present investigation has been carried out to understand the process and events leading to maturation of the ovary and testis in the Indian white prawn Penaeus indicus. The study includes the classification of the ovarian maturity stages based on its colour, gonadosomatic index, oocyte diameter and morphological changes in the oocyte. Further the process of oogenesis has been investigated using light and electron microscopic techniques. A histochemical study of the ovary has also been carried out to determine the sequence in which yolk substances are synthesized or sequestered in the oocytes and also to elicit the nature of the penaeid yolk material. The process of spermatogenesis and the development of the spermatophore has been studied in detail using light and electron microscopic methods. In addition a brief histochemical study on the testis was also made to understand the nature of the organic reserves in the sperm cells. |
