| Abstract: | The present thesis has described the development of some heterogeneous catalysts based on polymer supported dendrimers. Attachment of dendrimers to crosslinked polymer produced new catalysts with combined benefits of both dendrimers and heterogeneous catalysts. These were used as heterogeneous catalysts in selected reactions. All possible attempts were taken to avoid halogenated and aromatic solvents and toxic reagents. In short the present work has dealt with development of environmental friendly catalysts based on dendrimers. |

| Abstract: | This Thesis discussed molecules suitable for photorefractive effect. Out of the molecules studied, only one system was used to make photorefractive polymers system. Other molecules, especially, the electro-optic polymer, Poly(3-methacrloyl-1-(4'-nitro-4-azo-1'-phenyl)phenylalanine-co- methyl methacrylate) can be subjected to more detailed studies to explore the possibilities of using them for electro-optic applications. Though not included in the thesis, the efficient photoconductor, Poly(6-tert-butyl-3- phenyl-3,4-dihydro-2H-1,3-benzoxazine) sensitized with C60, which was described in Chapter 3 showed a low magnitude photovoltaic effect. This hints at the possibility of using this system for organic solar cells also. The thesis presented the initial observation of photorefractive effect in a polybenzoxazine based polymer system. A detailed analysis of the effect of C60, ECZ and DR1 can be carried out to check for the possibility of a high efficiency photorefractive system. |

| Abstract: | High energy materials are essential ingredients in both rocket and explosive formulations. These can be vulnerable due to maltreatment. During gulf war, several catastrophic accidents have been reported from their own payload munitions. The role of energetic binders here was to wrap the explosive formulations to convert it into insensitive munitions. With the aid of energetic binders, the explosive charges are not only protected from tragic accidents due to fire, bullet impact, adjacent detonation, unplanned transportation, but also form total energy output presumption. The use of energetic binders in rocket propellants and explosive charges has been increased after the Second World War. Inert binders in combination with energetic materials, performed well as binders but they diluted the final formulation. Obviously the total energy output was reduced. Currently, the research in the field of energetic polymers is an emerging area, since it plays crucial role in insensitive munitions. The present work emphasises on the synthesis and characterization of oxetanes, oxiranes and polyphosphazene based energetic polymers. The thesis is structured into six chapters. First part of chapter 1 deals with brief history of energetic polymers. The second part describes a brief literature survey of energetic polymers based on oxetanes and oxiranes. Third and fourth parts deal with energetic plasticizers and energetic polyphosphazenes. Finally, the fifth part deals with the various characterization techniques adopted for the current study and sixth part includes objectives of the present work. |

| Abstract: | Present thesis has discussed the design and synthesis of polymers suitable for nonlinear optics. Most of the molecules that were studied have shown good nonlinear optical activity. The second order nonlinear optical activity of the polymers was measured experimentally by Kurtz and Perry powder technique. The thesis comprises of eight chapters.The theory of NLO phenomenon and a review about the various nonlinear optical polymers has been discussed in chapter 1. The review has provided a survey of NLO active polymeric materials with a general introduction, which included the principles and the origin of nonlinear optics, and has given emphasis to polymeric materials for nonlinear optics, including guest-host systems, side chain polymers, main chain polymers, crosslinked polymers, chiral polymers etc.Chapter 2 has discussed the stability of the metal incorporated tetrapyrrole molecules, porphyrin, chlorin and bacteriochlorin.Chapter 3 has provided the NLO properties of certain organic molecules by computational tools. The chapter is divided into four parts. The first part has described the nonlinear optical properties of chromophore (D-n-A) and bichromophore (D-n-A-A-n-D) systems, which were separated by methylene spacer, by making use of DPT and semiempirical calculations.Chapter 4: A series of polyurethanes was prepared from cardanol, a renewable resource and a waste of the cashew industry by previously designed bifunctional and multifunctional polymers using quantum theoretical approach.Chapter 5: A series of chiral polyurethanes with main chain bis azo diol groups in the polymer backbone was designed and NLO activity was predicted by ZlNDO/ CV methods.In Chapter 7, polyurethanes were first designed by computational methods and the NLO properties were predicted by correction vector method. The designed bifunctional and multifunctional polyurethanes were synthesized by varying the chiral-achiral diol compositions |

Second harmonic generation efficiency (SHG) is used as a measure of second order nonlinear response. Nonlinear optical properties of polymers have been studied theoretically and experimentally. | Abstract: | Catalysis is a technologically important field which determines the quality of life in future. Catalyst research in pharmaceutical industry,fine chemical synthesis and emission control demands supported catalysts in bulk quantities.In the present work it was observed that clay supported catalysts mentioned in various chapters could also be used for the synthesis of similar molecules. The K10Ti catalyst can be used for the synthesis similar substituted imidazole derivatives under solvent free conditions and synthetically important Mannich bases of substrates containing various substitutes.Al-pillared saponite can be used for acetalation of other polyhydroxy compounds like glycerol,mannitol etc.Cu-Pd KSF catalyst has found application in C-C bond forming reactions which can be applied to other reactions and similar methods can be adopted for the synthesis of other catalyst by changing the transition metals. Montmorillonite K10 catalysed synthesis of triarylpyridines can be extended to the synthesis tetrasubstuted pyroles.K10Ti can also be utilized for the synthesis of similar heterocycles. |
