| Abstract: | This thesis Entitled “modelling and analysis of recurrent event data with multiple causes.Survival data is a term used for describing data that measures the time to occurrence of an event.In survival studies, the time to occurrence of an event is generally referred to as lifetime.Recurrent event data are commonly encountered in longitudinal studies when individuals are followed to observe the repeated occurrences of certain events. In many practical situations, individuals under study are exposed to the failure due to more than one causes and the eventual failure can be attributed to exactly one of these causes.The proposed model was useful in real life situations to study the effect of covariates on recurrences of certain events due to different causes.In Chapter 3, an additive hazards model for gap time distributions of recurrent event data with multiple causes was introduced. The parameter estimation and asymptotic properties were discussed .In Chapter 4, a shared frailty model for the analysis of bivariate competing risks data was presented and the estimation procedures for shared gamma frailty model, without covariates and with covariates, using EM algorithm were discussed. In Chapter 6, two nonparametric estimators for bivariate survivor function of paired recurrent event data were developed. The asymptotic properties of the estimators were studied. The proposed estimators were applied to a real life data set. Simulation studies were carried out to find the efficiency of the proposed estimators. |

| Abstract: | The thesis deals with some of the non-linear Gaussian and non-Gaussian time models and mainly concentrated in studying the properties and application of a first order autoregressive process with Cauchy marginal distribution. In this thesis some of the non-linear Gaussian and non-Gaussian time series models and mainly concentrated in studying the properties and application of a order autoregressive process with Cauchy marginal distribution. Time series relating to prices, consumptions, money in circulation, bank deposits and bank clearing, sales and profit in a departmental store, national income and foreign exchange reserves, prices and dividend of shares in a stock exchange etc. are examples of economic and business time series. The thesis discuses the application of a threshold autoregressive(TAR) model, try to fit this model to a time series data. Another important non-linear model is the ARCH model, and the third model is the TARCH model. The main objective here is to identify an appropriate model to a given set of data. The data considered are the daily coconut oil prices for a period of three years. Since it is a price data the consecutive prices may not be independent and hence a time series based model is more appropriate. In this study the properties like ergodicity, mixing property and time reversibility and also various estimation procedures used to estimate the unknown parameters of the process. |

| Abstract: | The mangrove ecosystem is one of the earth’s most endangered ecosystems. In this study, geochemical features of three mangrove ecosystems, Mangalavanam, Vypeen and Nettoor were compared. Water, sediment and core samples were collected from these stations for a period of one year. Nutrients, organic compounds orgnic carbon and hydrographical parameters of the samples were estimated. The present study revealed higher concentration of carbon in the surface sediments. The major temporary or ultimate sink for various pollutants in estuaries is the sedimentary reservoir, including intertidal areas. In the present study, higher values for dissolved nutrients, POC and carbohydrates were observed during low tide. |

| Abstract: | Comets are the spectacular objects in the night sky since the dawn of mankind. Due to their giant apparitions and enigmatic behavior, followed by coincidental calamities, they were termed as notorious and called as `bad omens'. With a systematic study of these objects modern scienti c community understood that these objects are part of our solar system. Comets are believed to be remnant bodies of at the end of evolution of solar system and possess the material of solar nebula. Hence, these are considered as most pristine objects which can provide the information about the conditions of solar nebula. These are small bodies of our solar system, with a typical size of about a kilometer to a few tens of kilometers orbiting the Sun in highly elliptical orbits. The solid body of a comet is nucleus which is a conglomerated mixture of water ice, dust and some other gases. When the cometary nucleus advances towards the Sun in its orbit the ices sublimates and produces the gaseous envelope around the nucleus which is called coma. The gravity of cometary nucleus is very small and hence can not in uence the motion of gases in the cometary coma. Though the cometary nucleus is a few kilometers in size they can produce a transient, extensive, and expanding atmosphere with size several orders of magnitude larger in space. By ejecting gas and dust into space comets became the most active members of the solar system. The solar radiation and the solar wind in uences the motion of dust and ions and produces dust and ion tails, respectively. Comets have been observed in di erent spectral regions from rocket, ground and space borne optical instruments. The observed emission intensities are used to quantify the chemical abundances of di erent species in the comets. The study of various physical and chemical processes that govern these emissions is essential before estimating chemical abundances in the coma. Cameron band emission of CO molecule has been used to derive CO2 abundance in the comets based on the assumption that photodissociation of CO2 mainly produces these emissions. Similarly, the atomic oxygen visible emissions have been used to probe H2O in the cometary coma. The observed green ([OI] 5577 A) to red-doublet emission ([OI] 6300 and 6364 A) ratio has been used to con rm H2O as the parent species of these emissions. In this thesis a model is developed to understand the photochemistry of these emissions and applied to several comets. The model calculated emission intensities are compared with the observations done by space borne instruments like International Ultraviolet Explorer (IUE) and Hubble Space Telescope (HST) and also by various ground based telescopes. |

| Abstract: | Diagnosis of Hridroga (cardiac disorders) in Ayurveda requires the combination of many different types of data, including personal details, patient symptoms, patient histories, general examination results, Ashtavidha pareeksha results etc. Computer-assisted decision support systems must be able to combine these data types into a seamless system. Intelligent agents, an approach that has been used chiefly in business applications, is used in medical diagnosis in this case. This paper is about a multi-agent system named “Distributed Ayurvedic Diagnosis and Therapy System for Hridroga using Agents” (DADTSHUA). It describes the architecture of the DADTSHUA model .This system is using mobile agents and ontology for passing data through the network. Due to this, transport delay can be minimized. It is a system which will be very helpful for the beginning physicians to eliminate his ambiguity in diagnosis and therapy. The system is implemented using Java Agent DEvelopment framework (JADE), which is a java-complaint mobile agent platform from TILab. |

| Abstract: | Natural rubber, styrene-butadiene rubber, and polybutadiene rubber were used to replace part of the butadieneacrylonitrile rubber in a 70/30 butadiene-acrylonitrile rubber/ poly(vinyl chloride) blend. Such replacement up to 15% of the total weight of the blend improved the mechanical properties, while decreasing the cost of the blend. Styrenebutadiene rubber could replace butadiene-acrylonitrile rubber up to 30% of the total weight of the blend without deterioration in the mechanical properties. |

| Abstract: | LLDPE was blended with poly (vinyl alcohol) and mechanical, thermal, spectroscopic properties and biodegradability were investigated. The biodegradability of LLDPE/PVA blends has been studied in two environments, viz. (1) a culture medium containing Vibrio sp. and (2) a soil environment over a period of 15 weeks. Nanoanatase having photo catalytic activity was synthesized by hydrothermal method using titanium-iso-propoxide. The synthesized TiO2 was characterized by X-Ray diffraction (XRD), BET studies, FTIR studies and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The crystallite size of titania was calculated to be ≈ 6nm from the XRD results and the surface area was found to be about 310m2/g by BET method. SEM shows that nanoanatase particles prepared by this method are spherical in shape. Linear low density polyethylene films containing polyvinyl alcohol and a pro-oxidant (TiO2 or cobalt stearate with or without vegetable oil) were prepared. The films were then subjected to natural weathering and UV exposure followed by biodegradation in culture medium as well as in soil environment. The degradation was monitored by mechanical property measurements, thermal studies, rate of weight loss, FTIR and SEM studies. Higher weight loss, texture change and greater increments in carbonyl index values were observed in samples containing cobalt stearate and vegetable oil. The present study demonstrates that the combination of LLDPE/PVA blends with (I) nanoanatase/vegetable oil and (ii) cobalt stearate/vegetable oil leads to extensive photodegradation. These samples show substantial degradation when subsequent exposure to Vibrio sp. is made. Thus a combined photodegradation and biodegradation process is a promising step towards obtaining a biodegradable grade of LLDPE. |

| Abstract: | This thesis presents the findings of a study on incorporating vanous thermoset resins into natural rubber for property improvement. Natural rubber is an important elastomer with the unique attribute of being a renewable agricultural product. The study was undertaken to investigate the extent to which the drawbacks of natural rubber, especially its poor thermal and oil resistance propel1ies could be nullified by blending with common thermoset resins. A thorough and comparative understanding of the perfonnance of different resins from this viewpoint will be beneficial for both natural IUbber processors and consumers. In this study the thennoset resins used were epoxy resin, phenolics, epoxidised phenolics and unsaturated polyester resin.The resins were incorporated into NR during compounding and their effects on the properties of NR were studied after vulcanization. Properties were studied for both gum and filled N R compounds. The important properties studied are cure characteristics, mechanical properties, ageing propel1ies, thermal propel1ies, crosslink density and extractability. Characterization studies were also conducted using FTIR, TGA and DSC.Improvement in mechanical properties was noticed in many cases. The results show that most resins lead to a reduction in the cure time of NR. The perfonnance of epoxy resin is most noticeable in this respect. Mechanical properties of the modified IUbber show maximum improvement in the case of epoxidised novolacs. Most resins are seen to improve the thermal and oil resistance propel1ies of NR. Epoxy novolacs show maximum effect in this respect also. However the presence of tillers is found to moderate the positive effects of the thermoset resins considerably. |

| Abstract: | Phenolic resins suffer from the presence of microvoids on curing. This often leads to less than satisfactory properties in the cured resin. This disadvantage has limited the use of phenolic resins to some extent. This study is an attempt to improve the mechanical properties of the phenolic resol resins by chemical modification aimed at reducing the microvoid population. With this end in view various themoset resins synthesised under predetennined conditions have been employed for modifying phenolic resols. Such resins include unsaturated polyester, epoxy and epoxy novolac prepolymers. The results establish the effectiveness of these resins for improving the mechanical properties of phenolics. Experimental and analytical techniques used include FTIR, DMA, TGA, SEM and mechanical property evaluation. While most of the modifier resins employed give positive results the effect of adding UP is found to be surprising as well as impressive. |

| Abstract: | The main aim of the study was to optimise the reactive extrusion conditions in the conventional modification processes of polyethylenes in a single screw extruder.The optimum conditions for peroxide crosslinking of low density polyethylene (LDPE), linear low density polyethylene (LLDPE) and their blend were determined in a torque rheometer. The actual reactive extrusion was performed in a laboratory single screw extruder using the optimum parameters. The influence of the coagent, triaUyl cyanurate (TAC), on the cross linking of low density polyethylene in the presence of peroxide was also investigated. The peroxide crosslinking was found to improve the mechanical properties and the thermal stability of the polyethylenes. The efficiency of crosslinking was found to be improved by the addition of coagent such as TAC.The optimum conditions for silane grafting viz temperature, shear rate, silane and DCP concentrations were determined on a torque rheometer in the case of LDPE, LLDPE and their blend. Silane grafting of LDPE in the presence of peroxide was performed with and without addition of water. Compounding of such mixtures in the melt at high temperatures caused decomposition of the peroxide and grafting of alkoxy silyl groups to the polyethylene chains.The optimum parameters for maleic anhydride modification of LDPE, LLDPE and their blend were determined. The grafting reaction was confinned by FTIR spectroscopy. Modification of polyethylenes with maleic anhydride in the presence of dicumyl peroxide was found to be useful in improving mechanical properties. The improvement was found to be mainly due to the grafting of carboxyl group and formation of crosslinks between the chains. The cross linking initiated improvements indicate extended property profiles and new application fields for polyethylenes.On the whole the study shows that the optimum conditions for modifying polyethylenes can be determined on a torque rheometer and actual modification can be performed in a single screw extruder by employing the optimum parameters for improved mechanical! thermal behaviour without seriously affecting their processing behaviour. |

| Abstract: | The present work focuses on the modification of the commonly used thermoplastics, polypropylene and polystyrene using nanosilica preparcd from a cheap source of sodium silicate. Melt compounding technique has been used for nanocomposite preparation as it is simple and suited to injection moulding. Nanosilica in a polymer matrix provide significant enhancement in strength, stiffness and impact strength. Incorporation of silica particles in a polymer also improves its thennal stability. To achieve better dispersion of fillers in polymer matrices the mixing was done at different shear rates. The enhancement in material properties indicates that at higher shear rates there is greater interaction between particles and the matrix and it depends on filler concentration and type of polymer used. N anosilica is a useful filler in thennoplastic polymers and has been applied in automotive applications, electronic appliances and consumer goods.This thesis is divided into six chapters. General introduction to the topic is described in chapter 1. Salient features of polymer nanocomposites, their synthesis, properties and applications are presented. A review of relevant literature and the scope and objectives are also mentioned in this chapter.The materials used and the vanous experimental method and techniques employed in the study are described in chapter 2. Preparation of nanocomposites by melt blending using Thenno Haake Rheocord, preparation of samples, evaluation of mechanical and thennal properties using UTM, Impact testing and characterization using DMA, TGA and DSC and morphology by SEM are described.The preparation of nanosilica from a laboratory scale to a pilot plant scale is described in chapter 3. Generation of surface modified silica, evaluation of kinetic parameters of the synthesis reaction, scale up of the reactor and modeling of the reactor are also dealt with in this chapter.The modification of the commodity thennoplastic, Polypropylene using nanosilica is described in chapter 4. Preparation of PP/silica nanocomposites, evaluation of mechanical properties, thermal and crystallization characteristics, water absorption and ageing resistance studies are also presented.The modification of Polystyrene using synthesized nanosilica IS described in chapter 5. The method of preparation of PS/silica nanocomposites, evaluation of mechanical properties (static and dynamic), thermal properties melt flow characteristics using Haake Rheocord, water absorption and ageing resistance of these nanocomposites are studied. |

| Abstract: | Upgrading two widely used standard plastics, polypropylene (PP) and high density polyethylene (HDPE), and generating a variety of useful engineering materials based on these blends have been the main objective of this study. Upgradation was effected by using nanomodifiers and/or fibrous modifiers. PP and HDPE were selected for modification due to their attractive inherent properties and wide spectrum of use. Blending is the engineered method of producing new materials with tailor made properties. It has the advantages of both the materials. PP has high tensile and flexural strength and the HDPE acts as an impact modifier in the resultant blend. Hence an optimized blend of PP and HDPE was selected as the matrix material for upgradation. Nanokaolinite clay and E-glass fibre were chosen for modifying PP/HDPE blend. As the first stage of the work, the mechanical, thermal, morphological, rheological, dynamic mechanical and crystallization characteristics of the polymer nanocomposites prepared with PP/HDPE blend and different surface modified nanokaolinite clay were analyzed. As the second stage of the work, the effect of simultaneous inclusion of nanokaolinite clay (both N100A and N100) and short glass fibres are investigated. The presence of nanofiller has increased the properties of hybrid composites to a greater extent than micro composites. As the last stage, micromechanical modeling of both nano and hybrid A composite is carried out to analyze the behavior of the composite under load bearing conditions. These theoretical analyses indicate that the polymer-nanoclay interfacial characteristics partially converge to a state of perfect interfacial bonding (Takayanagi model) with an iso-stress (Reuss IROM) response. In the case of hybrid composites the experimental data follows the trend of Halpin-Tsai model. This implies that matrix and filler experience varying amount of strain and interfacial adhesion between filler and matrix and also between the two fillers which play a vital role in determining the modulus of the hybrid composites.A significant observation from this study is that the requirement of higher fibre loading for efficient reinforcement of polymers can be substantially reduced by the presence of nanofiller together with much lower fibre content in the composite. Hybrid composites with both nanokaolinite clay and micron sized E-glass fibre as reinforcements in PP/HDPE matrix will generate a novel class of high performance, cost effective engineering material. |

| Abstract: | The present study was undertaken to prepare nanosilica by a simple cost effective means and to use it as a potential nanomodifier in thermoplastic matrices and to develop useful composites. Nanosilica was prepared from sodium silicate and dilute hydrochloric acid by polymer induced crystallization technique under controlled conditions. The silica surface was modified by silane coupling agent to decrease the agglomeration and thus to increase the reinforcement with polymer. The pristine nanosilica and modified nanosilica were used to make nano-micro hybrid composites. Short glass fibres and nylon fibres were used as microfillers. The hybrid nanocomposites based on Polypropylene (PP) and High density poly ethylene (HOPE) are prepared. The mechanical, thermal, crystallization and dynamic mechanical properties of the composites are evaluated. |

It has been observed that resonant excitation causes substantial variation in the relative intensities of lines in the emission spectrum of neon discharge. |
