Abstract:
We have studied testicular function in the biotin-
deficient rat biochemically and morphologically.
Serum testosterone and luteinizing hormone (LH) levels
were decreased significantly in the deficient rats. Administration
of biotin or gonadotropins to the deficient rats
reversed this decrease in serum testosterone. There was no
difference in the serum cholesterol level between the control
and biotin-deficient rats. A significant degree of sloughing
of seminiferous tubule germinal epithelium was noticed
in the biotin-deficient rat testes. Biotin treatment of biotindeficient
rats reversed this condition whereas testosterone
treatment was without any effect. The development and
maintenance of morphological and functional integrity of
the seminiferous tubules appears to require a biotin-mediated
step in addition to testosterone.

Abstract:
The present study addresses to understand the sedimentological properties of the coasts of kodungallur and chellanam, central Kerala to bring out the relationship between the textural, mineralogical and geochemical characters with that of the respective environment. The grain size study of the beach ridge sediments from different pits has been investigated at close intervals, which enables to understand the grain size variations with depth. The sediment samples from various pits of the beach ridges indicate that the sediments range primarily from medium to very fine sand, well to moderately sorted, fine to coarse skewed and leptokurtic to platykurtic. The study area is considered as a prograding coast. Variations in grain size down the pit give three phases of beach building activities i.e.; a coarsening upward sequence in the bottom layers, a fining upward in the middle and coarsening upward in the top. Beach ridges are formed by swash built sediments with cross bedding and setting lag type sediments with seaward dipping/horizontal units.
Geochemical signatures in the study area have been brought out through the analysis of major and trace elements. Iron is significantly enriched and its control over many trace elements is evident. Copper, chromium, cobalt, lithium, lead and zinc show decreasing trend with depth, while sodium, potassium, strontium, nickel and organic carbon increases. The association of many trace elements with organic carbon has also been established. Dissolution of trace elements in anoxic environment, at depth and reprecipitation in the oxic layers, at near or subsurface, are the major mechanism that brought out the variation of certain environmentally sensitive elements

Abstract:
The thesis presents the dynamics of a polymer chain under tension. It includes existing theories of polymer fracture, important theories of reaction rates, the rate using multidimensional transition state theory and apply it to the case of polyethylene etc. The main findings of the study are; the life time of the bond is somewhat sensitive to the potential lead to rather different answers, for a given potential a rough estimate of the rate can be obtained by a simples approximation that considers the dynamics of only the bond that breaks and neglects the coupling to neighboring bonds. Dynamics of neighboring bonds would decrease the rate, but usually not more than by one order of magnitude, for the breaking of polyethylene, quantum effects are important only for temperatures below 150K, the lifetime strongly depends on the strain and as the strain varies over a narrow range, the life varies rapidly from 105 seconds to 10_5 seconds, if we change one unit of the polymer by a foreign atom, say by one sulphure atom, in the main chain itself, by a weaker bond, the rate is found to increase by orders of magnitude etc.

Abstract:
An open cell photoacoustic configuration has been employed to evaluate the thermal diffusivity of pure InP as well as InP doped with sulphur and iron. Chopped optical radiation at 488 nm from an Ar-ion laser has been used to excite photoacoustic signals which been detected by a sensitive electret microphone. Thermal diffusivity value have been calculated from phase versus chopping frequency plots. Doped sample are found to show a reduced value for thermal diffusivity in comparison with intrinsically pure sample. The results have been interpreted in terms of the mechanisms of heat generation and transmission in semiconductors.

Abstract:
Thermal diffusivity (TD) measurements were performed on some industrially
important dyes – auramine O (AO), malachite green and methylene blue (MB) –
adsorbed K-10 montmorillonites using photoacoustic method. The TD value for
the dye-adsorbed clay mineral was observed to change with a variation in dye
concentration. The contribution of the dye towards TD was also determined. The
repeatedly adsorbed samples with MB and AO exhibited a lower TD than the
single-adsorbed samples. TD values of sintered MB samples were also obtained
experimentally. These sintered samples exhibit a higher TD, although they show
a trend similar to that of non-sintered pellets. A variation in dye concentration
and sintering temperature can be used for tuning the TD value of the clay mineral
to the desired level.

Abstract:
Thermal characterization of alumina–zirconia and zirconia ceramic tapes using a photoacoustic technique is presented. A transmission-mode geometry is employed for the measurement of thermal diffusivity while a reflection-mode geometry is used for the measurement of thermal effusivity. In both these geometries, the same open photoacoustic cell is used. From the measured values of thermal diffusivity and thermal effusivity, the thermal conductivity value has also been evaluated.

Abstract:
Thermal diffusivity of the composites of camphor sulphonic acid (CSA) doped polyaniline (PANI) and its
composites with cobalt phthalocyanine (CoPc) has been measured using open cell photoacoustic technique.
Analysis of the data shows that the effective thermal diffusivity value can be tuned by varying the relative
volume fraction of the constituents. It is seen that polaron assisted heat transfer mechanism is dominant in CSA
doped PANI and these composites exhibit a thermal diffusivity value which is intermediate to that of CSA
doped PANI and CoPc. The results obtained are correlated with the electrical conductivity and hardness
measurements carried out on the samples.

An open photoacoustic cell operating in the low range of chopping
frequency has been employed to evaluate the thermal diffusivity values of
intrinsic InP and InP doped with S, Sn and Fe. The experimental set-up is
calibrated by the evaluation of thermal diffusivity value of pure Si and
GaAs. The present investigation shows that doped samples show a reduced
value for thermal diffusivity compared to intrinsic sample. From the
analysis of data it is also seen that nature of dopant clearly influences the

Abstract:
Thermal diffusivity (TD) measurement on commercial K-10 and KSF montmorillonites was carried out by
photoacoustic technique. The TD of the montmorillonites after methylene blue adsorption changed with the
dye concentration. The repeatedly adsorbed samples showed a lesser TD than the single adsorbed samples.
After methylene blue adsorption the acid leached K-10 samples showed well defined changes in TD when
compared to the ordered KSF samples.
